15th Region Predictions
More Cowbell Wrote:I still see it a little differently. IMO, Varney is a nice player, but he is not on the same level as Bryant was. Varney simply gets into foul trouble too easily to be much of a factor. The loss of Bryant will affect Valley more than the loss of the two big guys, at least locally.

I think SV will be ok inside against other area teams. Taylor Newsome is a load, Hatfield is long enough to defend taller post players, and Tyler Newsome provides some decent size too. Granted, if one of them gets in foul trouble, SV will certainly be weakened, but then that could apply to practically every team.

Newsome and Hatfield are 6'3 and 6'6, not 6'10 and 6'7...I'm not saying they couldn't defend other post players. I'm just saying they won't alter or change anyone's shots in the paint off the drive as much as those two did. Which is a nice luxury to have when you can put as much pressure on the ball as you want.

If you haven't heard about THE BEASTS OF THE EAST, THE TWIN TOWERS, THE SASQUATCH TWINS, THE EASTERN EINSTEINS, then apparently you don't know much about Kentucky High School Basketball...

SV should not get cocky, the 15th is the weakset region in the state!

Seriously? The 16th region is way down this year. It may be one of the weakest but not THE weakest.

I think I'm pretty well-informed on 15th region basketball, and I've never once heard any of those terms used to describe any area players.

If those are nicknames some of you local guys have come up with for a couple of your players, then that's fine, but no one outside of Lawrence County uses those terms.

They may not alter as many shots as Adams or Tackett could, but they're quicker and more athletic. Which means less blocks but likely more steals. Hatfield will be able to guard the 6'6-6'7 taller, lanky guys, while Newsome will defend the ones with a little more bulk. Don't let Taylor Newsome's height deceive you, he plays much bigger and is hard to push around.

If your driving to the basket and you see Adams or Tackett right in your way, what comes to mind? Dikembe Mutumbo comes to mind:dontthink

Not even talking about being able to guard the post players, I say that again.

It's the drives to the basket and times the press does get beat. When they have to play in the half-court set more.

So, your saying you'd rather drive to the basket and see a 6'3 big man(that doesn't jump very high) and a 6'6 swingman(whom you definitely don't want in foul trouble), than 6'10/6'7?

If I was Elisha/Logan/Cody, I would have felt incredibly comfortable putting as much pressure on the ball as I wanted, because I know, I had two twin towers behind me and depth, if I got in foul trouble.
To be the man you have to beat the man !!!!!!!!!:flame:

Dikembe Mutombo? Uhh, not quite...

And I say again, I admit that there would be less blocks. That's not Taylor's game, and Ashley doesn't need to go for blocks and get in foul trouble. But SV will play a different kind of defense, with a quicker, more active starting five on the court. So yeah, if an opposing player gets by their man and drives to the basket, there may not be a tall presence to alter the shot. But the increased quickness and athleticism of SV's big men should mean the team will allow even less penetration, and result in more steals. Less of one, more of another.

As far as the depth issue, I wasn't arguing that point. SV's depth could be the only thing that might hold them back this year, as there is a definite dropoff after the starting five (with the possible exception of Zach Ramey, who I have not seen play yet). But while the lack of depth may keep SV from blowing some teams out like they did last year, they still have the best starting five in the region without question. And that should be enough to get out of the 15th and get to Rupp.

Any one got a number of Adams' blocks for last season/career?

Exactly right, they don't want Ashley in foul trouble.
uhavenoidea Wrote:They better try and matchup with the teams in the district first.

And you already have crowned them district champs. WOW!

YEP district champs sounds good can't wait.....and as far as the question can they match up with SV I do believe the Bobcats can. 8 to 10 deep on the bench. Well you know don't you. LOL:Thumbs:

Im goin say Shelby Valley wins Regions with Johnson Central runner up
It doesn't matter if you're 8-10 deep if by time those other 4 or 5 guys get in, you're down 20 points.
goodguy Wrote:Probably so, but...do all five of the players play on one team? Is there a team in the 15th that matches up with all of SV players?

I dont even like valley but I'll just put the truth out there, you could take the best player off every other team in the region and put them on one team and they still MIGHT NOT beat valley. I'm not saying they couldnt but it would be a good game. This is the weakest ive seen basketball in eastern kentucky in years.
I think that like everyone has said it will come down between SV and LC. I think that there is really not a close gap between the two teams by if someone can catch Valley on an off night and play them the correct way 15th crown can go another teams way. Until Valley if kncoked off I think that they hold the cards.
LC all the way.

agree
Valley is the best team in the 15th, but there are a few teams that could spoil the trip back to Rupp.
Valley wins the 15th no problem....
Valley
LC

Everyone else is way behind these two

I wouldn't go this far. There are some very good players in the region right now.

+1. Valley has a distinct advantage at this point.
Shelby Valley Hands Down
Valley will have to keep their bigs out of foul trouble. Actually, they will have to keep everyone out of foul trouble. Top 6 are good and are the best in the region hands down, and will be the favorite in every game in the region, BUT there is a drop off after those 6 and foul trouble could mean trouble scoring point at all. Hopefully they play smart defense and wont have to worry about that.
About everyone saying that "Valley's In trouble because they have no depth". Well We have alot of boy's who has stepped up this year and can play ball. If someone on the team needs a break, Alot of boy's can go out there and play for 3-4 minutes and do fine until the player is Rested up. I didnt play my Sophmore year or Junior year. BUT i came back out this year and im playing. After the starting 5. Me and Zach Ramey is the 1st and 2nd people off the bench. Then That leaves Trey Roberts, Jake Robinson, Rusty Roberts, Colton Damron, And Logan Lucas that Can step up to the Occasion also. So people needs to get the whole "there in trouble because they dont have any depth" thing out of there minds because the bench is gonna Surprise ALOT of people this year. Im not going to sit here and say were going to win it all because We have to take things one step at a time. So ill let you all decide that and just let us play ball. And the size thing isn't as bad as everyone thinks either. We have a 6'6, 2 6'5's, 6'4 and 6'3 people. Sure we dont have the 6'10 and 6'7 that we had last year, But this year we have people who are good size and quick. Which everyone needs and will help out alot!!
Congrats Dawg football team, thanks for the season. It is now time to direct your focus to the task at hand. Make sure each and every team you play remembers you. Everyone on here seems to think SV hands down. I say it will be a fun year for the dawgs. They have size, speed, quickness and they are fundamentally sound. There is another factor that sometimes gets overlooked. Dawgs have the top coach in the region and he is an even better person. Good Luck Coach A and Dawgs
1. Shelby Valley

2. Lawrence County
3 Johnson Central

Everybody else in the 15th region.
Shelby Valley wins it all
