Personally, I think it sould be Jim Matney, he has turned around, and made Johnson Central a new Mountain Power! :#1:

I will have to say he prob, could be, but I will go with Coach Goldsmith, he has played the toughiest schedule, and althought there record isnt the greatest they are still in the playoffs, if you remember the playoffs from last year they should have beat rockcastle.

Lots of good coaches in EKY to go around. It's hard to pick just one for the season. Maybe the playoffs will help clear some things up.

my homer vote goes to leon hart and the entire tomcat staff, secondly don damron at east carter has done a great job with his team this year hosting a playoff game for the first time since 97

Phillip Haywood

Haywood.... everyone thought the Pirates would struggle this year and it would be the year to get your licks in on them. Instead, Belfry has a legit shot at a third state title.

Matney

I think Haywood should get it. After losing what he lost last year, but still winning the district championship and competing for another state title is just awesome. He gets my vote.

The 4 or 5 best we had several times. Their line played great the rest of the day. Also he seems like a great person! He gets my vote.:theman:

matney has done a nice piece of coaching with JC.. Haywood has as weel.
11-04-2005, 04:00 PM
No offense to Matney this year but his best job coaching was last year when he came to Johnson Central. They may have not made the playoffs but after going 1-9 the year before, things were looking dim at JC. He came in and had them in the playoff hunt, if Music doesn't go down they may have had a home playoff game last year. Matney's a good choice as is Haywood. The coach at Morgan Co and coach at East Carter should get some consideration as should Bill Mike Runyon of Paintsville.

matney has done a good job at jc but coach runton has turned the tigers around

Isn't this Coach Runyon's first season? If so, he definently deserves some mention.

Yes it is, he's been an assistant for many years before but this is his first year as head coach.

I would go with Shawn Hager Sheldn Clark coming out a 2-8 season last year turns the boys around.

Actually his other choice was Russell's Ivan McGlone. McGlone lost Josh Gross who was one of the best RBs in the state for the last 4 seasons. Still this year he led his team to a regular 9-1 season and a 4th consecutive district championship.
Matney would be his choice after McGlone

You could put the following names in a hat and pulled one out and have a deserving coach
Jim Matney
Shawn Hager
Phillip Haywood
Leon Hart
McGlone
Bill Mike Runyon
Eastern Ky is blessed with some very good football coaches

I'll throw out 4 names and see what everyoine thiunks. In no paticular order.
Shawn Hager: The SC ball coach has turned a 2-8 team that couldn't win a close game to a team that prides themselves on playing well in the close ones. He has changed the whole attitude at SC. What he has done there is remarkable. With a convincing win over Breathitt he has made his mark on this season for sure. If Hager gets the boys from SC to the regional championship or further it is his to lose IMO.
Jim Matney: He has taken a dormant JC program and in 2 years made them the district runner up. He did lose to a very good Madison Southern team last night, but I doubt anyone will hold that against him. He had JC at the top of the state in rushing and has restored alot of pride in the Johnson County football program.
Bill Mike Runyon: As much as it pains me to put BMR on here because of what he did to me in basketball when I played, you can't argue with success. His first year there and he leads Paintsville to a district cahmpionship. He suffers only 2 losses and those were to county rival AAA Johnson Central and Pikeville.
Phillip Haywood: It seems every year you could put this man's name on the list and make an argument he deserves it every year. We all thought (myself included) that this was the year Belfry fell from the ranks of powerhouse. We could not have been more wrong. This may be Haywood's best coaching job in his tenure at the Pirates helm. 8-2 with losses coming to AAAA powerhouse Henry Clay in the first game of the year and the mighty Ironton Tigers. How can you hold that against him. If he makes another trip to the Pizza Box it will be hard to go against him.

hager and bmr are the winners in my book matney and haywood have always been great coaches but in hagers second year at the helm and bmr's first what they have done is remarkable sc coming off of a 2-8 season and p'ville winning district they get my nod
11-05-2005, 12:50 PM
me i would say Ivan McGlone with him loosing gross and still being able to return so many srs and take them into their district and sweep it once again, and make noise in the region back to back i have to say their is very lil love for him on here. so thats my vote.

Coach David Mitchell or Coach Parker from the Lynn Camp Wildcats...they both do great with their kids for the team usually ranking from 20-30 no more....We went to Regional Runner Up with i think 29 kids...because of them....so yea my hat goes off to them.....
