Great post Brian, 100% agreed over here.
11-11-2009, 11:50 PM
I didnt see anything wrong with it but he does need to contact WYMT and explain why he said these things
11-11-2009, 11:51 PM
I do want to correct on thing...the last line should read Class A District 6 when discussing it's importance in a 30 county area. That district is only important to the fans within a 25 mile area of Williamsburg and Lynn Camp.

Ahh that 1999 LC team Brians mentions just makes me smile

I am a little bothered not by what some think, but rather the opinions some consider factual. WYMT handles criticism well when it is warranted. You will never see me "dis-respecting" others because of something they believe. A prime example is disagreement with polls, predictions or statements. Disagreement is part of sports and so is motivating players. Behind closed doors bashing someone to motivate is fine with me! I have no problem with that because it is in the locker room. I know it's happened before and have been told by the coaches they did it at my/our expense. However, when that bashing is distributed in the media for no reason at all, that is unacceptable and is personal.
One problem I have with some of these message board comments is they are not backed up with facts. It is very easy to say we give no respect. But what does it mean to get respect? When has WYMT in coverage, reports, or generic conversation say, "We hate that team, coach, player, community or school!" Never has that happened. There are times when we disagree with a coach about something, but we don't go on TV and air our grievance.
When I played, I could care less if someone respected me. The teams I played on would kick your teeth in whether you respected us or not! If you respected us great! Here's a 11-2 beat down. If you didn't respect us, great! Here's a 13-3 mercy rule. Respect comes from winning championships, winning with class and conducting yourself the right way on and off the playing field. We have all fallen short at times, but the overall body or work is what should be examined.
Please understand the following is not being written with a harsh attitude or tone. There are things that need to be corrected and concerning the John Hines situation, plenty has transpired since the article was written the public has no clue about. It is a dead issue while others are not.
Now to address some of the comments posted:
***They were primarily there for Perry Central because the station is located in Perry County and most of the advertisers are from Perry and they pay the bills.****
What are you talking about????? The reason WYMT chose PCC at Pulaski was because of one reason. We thought it would be the best game in the coverage area. It turned out to be just that, the best game. It could also be argued the Harlan County-Southwestern was the best. Either way, no argument here. The WYMT sports department could care less who pays the bills. Don't get me wrong, I want paid next week but our job is not about pleasing only those who spend money with our station. How many advertisers come from Letcher County? Not as many as there used to be and LCC football and basketball is on quite frequently. When the three of us discuss games, we do not say, "OK Derek, ABC Company paid $5,000 this month we better put them on TV." THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN!!! Know your facts, do not float an opinion and pretend it is factual.
***Ask the Lexington stations how much they get blasted if they report something negative about UK.****
What has WYMT reported about Pulaski County that would be deemed negative? Nothing. We have praised Pulaski County for getting up off the mat and proving people wrong! They were in the pre-season Top 10, Derek did a nice story on the injuries to Stone, Muse, and how the team responded. We have done nothing but positive stories on the Maroons. If we blasted them, we would take criticism by the bucket and it would be deserved.
***I agree WYMT plays some favoritism to closer schools...***
Once again incorect. We (WYMT sports) could care less who wins any game. Some of my "favorite teams" over the past 11 years are from the farthest corners of our coverage area. These are my favorite football teams. Middlesboro 1998, Lawrence County 1999, Johnson Central 2000, Fleming Neon 2001, Belfry 2003-04, Williamsburg 2004...the closest school in that list was Neon and that is a 45 minute drive.
***The reason they covered the Pulaski/Perry Central game was that they were also in the area to cover Harlan Co./Southwestern and the Somerset game!***
This would be true on most occassions but this past Friday, PCC vs. Pulaski was the game of the week if they played it in Tennessee. This week our featured game is Knox Central at Lawrence County which are non-revenue generating areas.
***During the season they are bad to focus on certain teams and thats kind of unfair.***
We focus on what we believe has the best storylines and we do try to focus on the best games. Class 5A District 8 is a lot more compelling to the entire mountain region than say Class 5A District 6 or Class A District 7. We encompass the mountains, not certain schools.
Once again this needed to be said. WYMT does the best we can with no prejudice, bias, or dis-respect to anyone.
UHHHHH believe that should just about wrap this thread up.....Hey Brian, if no one wants you all around, remember you all can come over to Belfry and tailgate with the Pirates anytime. Seriously, you all do a great job and like any business or profession, you cannot please everyone. Just keep doing what you're doing; giving great local sports coverage to a huge area and its outstanding athletes. BTW, Archer has done a great Joe Kinzer imitation with his eating at the tailgates this year.

Bell County Bobcats, Dudley Hilton, and the whole area supports WYMT I grew up on that show man Bell County has your back Brian and that go's for anybody that works at WYMT not just sports overtime

sounds like he was trying to get his team fired up...pretty good pep talk to me..would have pumped me up for sure..

As an older fan(54)I can remember when our kids got no recognition. Now this area has the best regional sports coverage of any place in the state. I have watched several channels from across the state(including Lex and Lou) and noone, I mean noone has the coverage that WYMT has for its viewing audience. These guys are professional, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. They go above and beyond just reporting a score. They delve into these kids lives and report about the kids themslves- not just the sporting accomplishments. I am proud of WYMT and it's representation of our mountain kids through the years. They are 2nd to none. Simply put---"THE BEST"
11-12-2009, 10:59 AM
As a man who doesn't live in the mountains of Eastern Ky and don't get Wymt I really missed watching sports overtime. I love the coverage they give. I live in Lexington and they don't cover high school sports like WYMT. I am usually trying to look at it on the internet every friday night and I know I can't wait until this friday night. Thanks to WYMT for all of the coverage and keep up the great work guys.:Thumbs:

i have one question. on sports overtime. you aired the call of fugaite mouth piece at the 3 then cut to him with out it in the middel of the field. and asked why the ref didnt call it then.just so you know he was warned twice before it was actually called. you didnt give the facts you just bashed th refs for the call without getting the facts imo just sloppy reporting. trying to makr the refs look bad
11-12-2009, 11:46 AM
I don't think he question the job they done or if they covered kids in the area.I think that he said the only reason was Perry and he belived they should have covered his team more. Probally should have just told them not the paper. If it was for motivation it is ok. WYMT are big boys they can handle it.

The fact is that Breathitt while being average, had a couple opportunities to win that game and just blew it by making stupid mistakes that had nothing to do with SC playing defense. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally.

omg this is about as low as a tv station can go!!! getting on a msg board??
wow i dont see wsaz and other stations doing this!! this is exactly why wymt is pathetic. when they do cover a game sometimes you cant tell whats going on because the camera man is horrible or the camera is one. i dont know how many times i listen to the anchors and they mess up and say the wrong thing or wrong score. or mess up somebodys name. the only thing wymt is good for is getting scores when they are right and getting the latest news if you can understand what the reporter is saying. i would love to send this to a major station they would laugh there buts off and prolly buy wymt out just to get you all out of news. because if you have to get on a msg board to brag about yourself and defend yourself that should tell you somethings wrong!!!

I love WYMT an they do more for sports than any other major station. I dont balme them for saying what they think. You do the same except hide behind a name. If they feel they are being bashed for something like this then I am glad they voiced their concer adn let everyone know they are not like that. yeah they do have a bad peception sometimes by some. But they do a great job. Pulaski is the bad ones for saying what Hines said. I wonder how his Superinetdent feels about him bashing a news staion like that. Maybe he should be reprimanded. Is all of Pulaski like that.

There is nothing wrong with setting the facts and the record straight. Many times we all read something and figure it is factual. No one is bragging about anything. WYMT is not your typical station. We have a much deeper relationship with the area we cover and that is not typical of other stations.

I agree. Nothing like making sure facts are out ther and not lies like Hines said. If WYMT didnt like Pulaski, then they wouldnt have aired them on how they did good this year. IMO PC is a joke and deserves NOTHING.

Some of what I stated in an earlier post is one of them that Brian Milam disagreed with and questioned. He has every right to do so. I have no problem with this. After reviewing my post, I should have worded some things differently. I still believe that some of things I stated are true(maybe I was wrong about other things) but that is only my opinion, it is not fact. They still do a good job and we would have no coverage without them.

I have to disagree. PC has over come multiple injuries and everyone wrote them off. Including WYMT, when the QB went down, they have come back and had a great season. They do deserve, a job well done.
11-12-2009, 03:54 PM
The Johnson Central Golden Eagles love WYMT and Sports Overtime. Without WYMT there would be no Mountian Top 10 and the only coverage of your team would would be in the local newspaper. How could you have a Friday Night without Sports Overtime!

How can you say that we have not given PC credit for their season, when we ran a 3 and a half minute piece showing all they have overcome to get where they are now?
11-12-2009, 04:04 PM
To me, it sounds like PC's coach was using that as a tool to get his players fired up for the game, i really don't think a coach would bash a tv station for spotlighting their game. But, if he really meant that towards WYMT and wasn't using it as a tool to fire his players up then it was wrong.
11-12-2009, 04:09 PM
I didn't say that. I was responding to the other post that said that they deserved nothing. Everyone wrote them off when the QB went down. You gave the credit because they bounced back. The 3 and a half came from being shocked they came back. I am not critizing you. Just the other post.

Does a littlel kid deserve a toy from Wal Mart if they throw a fit in front of everyone and scream at mom and dad for not getting them what they want. IMO they dont deserve a toy for acting that way.
Johnny Hines doesnt deserve anyting for bashing a TV staion that helped them and spotlighted his program. Sounds like a spoiled brat to me. Expects everyting on silver platter and crys when he dont get his way. PC fans and administration need to tell him to grow up and act like an adult.

The kids of PC deserve what they got a championship. The coach don't have to like WYMT or any of the media. I'm not saying he should have said it. But, really was it that bad. I'm sure Perry had something to do with why they were there. So did money and advertisement. But to say the PC program deserves nothing you just put yourself in the same boat as the coach.
