Toughest loss
#1
What is the thoughest High School loss that you have endured either as a player or a fan? A real gut wrencher that you knew you wouldnt get over.

For me, I have two.
Raceland led Nicholas Co. for the entire game including a lead of around 34-8 at the half. Nicholas scored to take the lead with 1 second left and won 38-34 or some some score like that.
We lost to Belleview my senior year in the playoffs 24-6. We were the better team on the field that night and just got outplayed. I still get angry thinking about that game.

I don't dwell on defeat. My answer is "None". :thanks:

"I've often compared Bell County football fans to a beautiful woman who's painfully insecure: No matter how many times she's told she's beautiful, it's never enough. She needs constant validation. And if you have the audacity to say someone else is beautiful, too, she throws a tantrum, slings dishes and slashes your tires."

Belfry's 2007 loss to Lou. Central in the 3A Finals.

Belfry was 14-0 and had not trailed a single time the entire season. They had a narrow lead as the 1st Half ran down and as Belfry QB Andrew Elkins dropped back to pass he was hit and threw an INT that Central returned for a TD as the Half ended. In the 2nd Half Belfry was driving late in the game trailing by 3 points and had the ball in the redzone when they fumbled.

For me back in 2001 and 2002- We PCC beat Whitesburg by 24 points in a game that the jv played almost all the 2nd half of the game and then a few weeks later get beat by 2 at PCC in the region tournament in the best season that PCC has ever had at 26-2.

My sr year, we was up at halftime 22-6. We lose that game 28-22. We come out the 2nd half thinking the game was over. We didn't do nothing. Pineville come out fire up.

This is probably the toughest but not the worst loss i have witnessed
2003 Boyd County(4 seed) beats Bell County(1 seed) @ Bell County 31-20

Rockcastle has had three very tough loses this season which gave them there first losing regular season in 25 years. they lost to Pulaski in the final 10 secounds after having a 3td lead. Lost to Knox Central in Overtime 21-20 after trying for a two point conversion. and lost to southwestern in the final secounds. it seem like they just havent had any luck this year

As a player it would be the final four where we had to go all the way from Lawrence Co as the biggest cinderella team in state history all the way to Mayfield which is almost Missouri! It's the longest playoff game in history and changed the face of the playoffs because the trip was so long. We were 40 point underdogs in the final four. Final score 21-18! We had no kicker and missed 3 two point conversions. Get two and we play on the carpet. Mayfield had a kid that had just gotten out of jail and won the 100 and 200 meter dash. He led the OVC in rushing at Eastern and played in the Canadian Football league. He ran a punt back in the 4th and we got picked in the endzone on our last drive. They went on to lose by 3 to Danville in the Championship game. That's the closest LC has been to playing on the carpet.
As a coach it would be in 1997 at Bourbon Co. We had just broken Breathitts 42 game win streak and had a good shot at getting to the carpet as we had knocked off #1. Traveled to Bourbon and Dudley spoiled the party.

Cov. Cath beat Highlands in the playoffs.

(Although the Belfry loss in the playoffs in 1979 was also a killer.)

my toughest loss would have to be to lexinton catholic my junior year winston guy killed us with his speed...good game and one great athlete...
#13
Mine would have to be my Senior year. Got beat by Middlesboro 35-14 in the second round of the playoffs, which was the last game of my high school career. We were the underdogs, nobody gave us a chance to win, but watchin the clock run down knowin that it was all over, it felt like my heart had been ripped outta my chest.

Yea, there are plenty of tough losses, heck any loss is the toughest, but for me personnally it was 2006 Cov. Cath.

Prestonsburg losing to Mayfield 1993 state finals after ending Danville's 62 game streak. Winning touchdown called back. Winning field goal missed by inches.:flush:

If it is any consolation, the toughest Belfry loss for me came a week later against Franklin Simpson in the finals.

Belfry lost their leading RB in the Highlands game and then had the FB and the other RB get hurt in the championship game against Franklin Simpson.

Belfry was 12-0 and ranked #1 that year heading into the finals and as a 12 year old kid, I thought they were the second coming of the Green Bay Packers.

Losing hurt, bad.

I've got 3.. 2 as a player and 1 as a coach..

As A Coach...
2006 Playoffs Leslie Co. vs Middlesboro at Middlesboro.. Leslie Scores and is Down by 1 Koogler decides to go for 2 and take the lead.. Ryan Howard runs a QB keep and dives and hits the pile on with the ball.. Referee says "No Good".. Got it on film from 2 angles.. It was a horriblely blown call..

As A Player..

1994... Leslie Rolls through the regular season, topping even the Cantrell ratings for the majority of the season... Cov Cath comes to town for the State Semi-Finals.. We go straight down and score.. 6-0.. Then, the wheels fell off.. Lost 31-6..

1995... Leslie beats Highlands in the Thoroughbred bowl in a real shootout 44-42..
Leslie ends up going to Highlands for the state Semi-finals.. Never a game.. Highlands dropped 9 in coverage and Leslie could never run the ball.. Justin Frisk had a field day..

Greenup Countys 29-28 loss to Rowan County in a key district game this season, GC led 22-2 at the half, and got beat on fourth and twenty, blown coverage on a half back pass play. The season went south after that game, the team never recovered from that loss.:HitWall:

IMO, Belfry's back to back State Championship losses in 1985 and 1986. In 85, Paducah Tilghman had just moved down from 4A to play at the 3A level....and in 1986, Owensboro had just moved from 4a to play at 3a.

Belfry was by far the best pure 3A team in the state...both years. Those were hard losses to swallow....

I survived both, but neither with a kid on the team. I'm guessing you had a senior in 2006?

I feel your pain. If you recall, similar thing happened to Russell a few years back with Merger County, opps,I mean Mercer County. Ther was also a controversial touchdown call that ended up being the differance in the game.

In 2004 Rockcastle lost to Ashland in double overtime AT Ashland 34-27.

Rocket fans soon got over it because the next season they beat Mason County, Bell County (shut-out), and got their revenge over Ashland AT Ashland.

I feel for you. This seems to be a nine year cycle, so I guess we should be on the lookout for 2015.

I would highly disagree on the '86 team. I still feel Danville was the best squad that year, particularly if you played on a better field.

The difference was Mercer had more students than Russell and were competing in the same class. PT and Owensboro had been recently realigned based on their enrollment and were legitimately in AAA because of school size.
