Bashing of WYMT
#1
I saw this on another site and thought it was sad to see how a coach would disrespect a TV station for coveriing his team.. the team is Pulaski Co. read below from the Commonwealth Journal.

Despite all of that however, Pulaski County still isn’t getting the kind of respect that coach Hines believes his club should be getting.

And, the PC head coach isn’t one bit happy about the lack of respect either.

“These boys are the most disrespected conference champions in the state of Kentucky,” stated a very candid coach Hines, in describing his team of Rodney Dangerfield’s.

“I don’t know why, because I think we’re a pretty good football team,” Hines added. “We’re three snaps away from being an undefeated team, and we’re the most disrespected team there is. I told the kids before the game, and I believe it with all my heart, that WYMT-TV was here, and we were the game of the week, because they expected to see an upset. They were here to cover Perry Central’s four over one — they weren’t here to watch us. They don’t give a crap about us.”

He has to say what he had to get his kids fired up. I don't think that the coach doesn't like WYMT. He just had to give a really good speach. It worked didn't it?

Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah I don't really see that as a bashing either. Just good motivation.

I see a lot wrong with it. Especially since I watched Pulaski on WYMT getting all of the credit in the world for the great season they had. WYMT helped them and credited them on TV. And then Hines goes to bash them. Isnt it like biting the hand that feeds you. No respect. I could think of better things to say to motivate kids. Heck it is the playoffs, why do they need motivated if they are so good.
#7
where's the bashing?
#8
Telling all of Pulaski that WYMT doesnt give a crap about Pulaski, when actually they did a great show on them. So most uninformed people in Pulaski thinks WYMT hates Pulaski.
#9
I don't see any bashing there... Sounds to me like its a coach trying to get his kids motivated... I don't see anything wrong there.
#10
Sounds like an honest opinion to me.
#11
Saying it to motivate your kids is one thing. Repeating it to a paper AFTER the fact is another. Pretty juvenile and low class in my opinion.

I disagree with "ole useless nut"(just kidding) on some things but he is exactly right on this one. He is either being honest or he is trying to motivate his kids. Most everything is free game when it comes to motivation because most coaches careers is determined by wins and losses and if they don't win they get fired. I live closer to Hazard then Pulaski County is and Coach Hines is exactly right. They were primarily there for Perry Central because the station is located in Perry County and most of the advertisers are from Perry and they pay the bills. Televised games and most of the teams in the WYMT are mostly determined by how much money they make from certain areas due to advertising. This is the reason you have mediocre teams from the bigger marketing areas in the mountains in the WYMT every year.

Sure, That is why they were there. WYMT may not be the station he watches.
#15
I think it is low brow to repeat it to a newspaper...but the actual quote itself is pretty tame.

Judging by the response the Mountain Top 10 provokes on a weekly basis, and the subsequent "WYMT is a bunch of idiots", "WYMT is biased", that several school's fans bring to the table, this is a pretty secondary statement.

I think it is just water under the bridge. But if I was Whitley County's Head Coach you could bet your bottom dollar I would use this to motivate my kids saying how "Pulaski is more concerned with seeing their faces on TV then playing us." Big Grin

If you are part of the media you are going to get blasted. That is part of the deal. Sounds like someone got their toes stepped on and they didn't like it. Ask the Lexington stations how much they get blasted if they report something negative about UK. That is part of being the media, someone isn't going to like what you say, there are always coaches that are not going to agree with you. So, you just have to get over it or find some other source of work.
#17
Are they in the Mountain Top 10???

I agree WYMT plays some favoritism to closer schools, but having done this I know that it is hard to run all over the country and get video to the station to air for Sports OT! The reason they covered the Pulaski/Perry Central game was that they were also in the area to cover Harlan Co./Southwestern and the Somerset game! That doesn't happen to often having that many teams playing within 10 minutes of each other.

But they are the media and should expect and expect criticism!
#18
Don't worry PC's season is nearly over. Hines is pretty outspoken on things and I don't like that way he uses them. YMT for all their faults is the ONLY reason a lot of these kids get on TV. Sure they have a hard time picking the true #1 to start the year but hey they got it right eventually.

My hats off to WYMT and thanks for all you do for mountain sports.

I think WYMT does a great jod:Thumbs:

I would love for Hines to schedule Bell Co. If he wants respect then play a big boy. He is too chicken to schedule a Bell or Boyle.
i believe he played North Laurel who isnt too traditonally tough, Barren Co, Somerset, Rock, Russell Co, and east jessamine.
Combined W/L is 31--29. Withhelp of 10-0 somerset who PC didnt want to even play. Why, becasue he is afraid of a littlel school in his own county that he knew he couldnt beat.
#21
pulaski dont get the respect they think they deserve because they dont give the respect. their team is the most undisciplined team ive ever saw in my life besides hazard. they late hit alot, they run their mouths by talking trash, an the players for some reason think its mature to flip other teams off during warmups.
:dontthink
"respect... you get what you give" idc what kinda champion you are

Therewas a time when there was NO coverage in this part of the state; what little coverage we had was "occasional" coverage from out of state tv stations when a team from the region was good enough to make it to the finals. I too, appreciate what WYMT is doing and has done for mtn. football.
#24
i dont think he is bashing wymt i think he is just getting his boiys fired up. but what he said was true. wymt has its favorites but they do a good job when it comes playoff time showing all the games and making sure you know how your school does. During the season they are bad to focus on certain teams and thats kind of unfair.to be honest i didnt even know pulaski county had that kind of record and they should get tv time because they deserve it!! they work just as hard as other schools.

WYMT does a great job.
#26
WYMT does a very good job..........I would expect a station to cover its hometown teams such as PCC, even though I don't like them, and Hazard...........WYMT way to go!!!!!!!!!!:thanks::rockon::1:

Of course, being old, I remember the pre-WYMT days, thank them for any coverage they give. They have limited resources and budget restraints. They are going to cover the teams that are closer to their backyard. Brian Milam and the rest kudos! They need more camera operators anytime on Friday nights if you have the qualifications.

I agree! Nothing like staying up to watch Sports Overtime. It has grown and grown, and I think it will get bigger.

If it is OK with everyone I would like to address some of what is being said on this thread. I am a little bothered not by what some think, but rather the opinions some consider factual. WYMT handles criticism well when it is warranted. You will never see me "dis-respecting" others because of something they believe. A prime example is disagreement with polls, predictions or statements. Disagreement is part of sports and so is motivating players. Behind closed doors bashing someone to motivate is fine with me! I have no problem with that because it is in the locker room. I know it's happened before and have been told by the coaches they did it at my/our expense. However, when that bashing is distributed in the media for no reason at all, that is unacceptable and is personal.
One problem I have with some of these message board comments is they are not backed up with facts. It is very easy to say we give no respect. But what does it mean to get respect? When has WYMT in coverage, reports, or generic conversation say, "We hate that team, coach, player, community or school!" Never has that happened. There are times when we disagree with a coach about something, but we don't go on TV and air our grievance.
When I played, I could care less if someone respected me. The teams I played on would kick your teeth in whether you respected us or not! If you respected us great! Here's a 11-2 beat down. If you didn't respect us, great! Here's a 13-3 mercy rule. Respect comes from winning championships, winning with class and conducting yourself the right way on and off the playing field. We have all fallen short at times, but the overall body or work is what should be examined.
Please understand the following is not being written with a harsh attitude or tone. There are things that need to be corrected and concerning the John Hines situation, plenty has transpired since the article was written the public has no clue about. It is a dead issue while others are not.
Now to address some of the comments posted:
***They were primarily there for Perry Central because the station is located in Perry County and most of the advertisers are from Perry and they pay the bills.****

What are you talking about????? The reason WYMT chose PCC at Pulaski was because of one reason. We thought it would be the best game in the coverage area. It turned out to be just that, the best game. It could also be argued the Harlan County-Southwestern was the best. Either way, no argument here. The WYMT sports department could care less who pays the bills. Don't get me wrong, I want paid next week but our job is not about pleasing only those who spend money with our station. How many advertisers come from Letcher County? Not as many as there used to be and LCC football and basketball is on quite frequently. When the three of us discuss games, we do not say, "OK Derek, ABC Company paid $5,000 this month we better put them on TV." THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN!!! Know your facts, do not float an opinion and pretend it is factual.

***Ask the Lexington stations how much they get blasted if they report something negative about UK.****
What has WYMT reported about Pulaski County that would be deemed negative? Nothing. We have praised Pulaski County for getting up off the mat and proving people wrong! They were in the pre-season Top 10, Derek did a nice story on the injuries to Stone, Muse, and how the team responded. We have done nothing but positive stories on the Maroons. If we blasted them, we would take criticism by the bucket and it would be deserved.

***I agree WYMT plays some favoritism to closer schools...***
Once again incorect. We (WYMT sports) could care less who wins any game. Some of my "favorite teams" over the past 11 years are from the farthest corners of our coverage area. These are my favorite football teams. Middlesboro 1998, Lawrence County 1999, Johnson Central 2000, Fleming Neon 2001, Belfry 2003-04, Williamsburg 2004...the closest school in that list was Neon and that is a 45 minute drive.

***The reason they covered the Pulaski/Perry Central game was that they were also in the area to cover Harlan Co./Southwestern and the Somerset game!***
This would be true on most occassions but this past Friday, PCC vs. Pulaski was the game of the week if they played it in Tennessee. This week our featured game is Knox Central at Lawrence County which are non-revenue generating areas.

***During the season they are bad to focus on certain teams and thats kind of unfair.***
We focus on what we believe has the best storylines and we do try to focus on the best games. Class 5A District 8 is a lot more compelling to the entire mountain region than say Class 5A District 6 or Class A District 7. We encompass the mountains, not certain schools.

Once again this needed to be said. WYMT does the best we can with no prejudice, bias, or dis-respect to anyone.
