New System for Playoffs ?

The current system needs to be evaluated. What are everyone's thoughts.

I like having six classes. Winning a state championship is a little easier with the new system.

Needs to go back to four classes and would like for the post season from second round on to be refereed by either 6 or 7 officials.

Any system that the KHSAA chooses there gonna be certain things people will not agree on such as classes and how many officials are doing a game. Just like the NCAA, there are people who say playoffs and people who say leave it up to the BCS. No matter what format we have there are always going to be issues and complaints.

If money is the issue from the governing boys then take a look at the distance of some of the teams that had to travel to take on the first round opponent. Look at the lopsided scores and "empty bleachers" that took place these first round games. Confused

I agree, went to P'burg the other night, not a huge crowd at all. I think the first round is a waste of time. Does the officials who call these games come from other districts?

I thought they done like basketball, worked in their own districts until regions started. I maybe wrong but that would be another cost if they come from other districts.

I like the six classes but there is a down fall to it in some regions and well actually the districts teams make the playoffs that really wouldn't if it was 4 classes thats the only part i have a problem with

I would like to see the regions switch every year, you would get to play teams you would not get to play every year like 2 years ago, GC played Harrison County, the winner got Lexington Catholic, playing Bell and Rock and Knox Central and McCreary County, district 8 in 4 A, has a problem competing with that district, only Lawrence County is left in our district, this is almost as bad as district 8 5A, having to play Northern Kentucky, for the regional title, it is hard to compete with those kind of programs.:notworthy:igiveup:

the new playoffs system needs to stay the same

I like the 6A unstead of the 4A system because more people come to the state Championship game unstead of the 4A system

Needs to deffinatly go back to 4 classes. You have teams now making the playoffs without having a win. No way should every team make the playoffs in a district! When I was in school our district consisted of Belfry, P-burg, Shelby Valley, Magoffin, Pike Central, East Ridge, Sheldon Clark top 4 made it to the playoffs. Needs to be how it is. And for other people who said it makes it easier to win a state title, it shouldn't be easy to do so. It wasn't broke in the first place and shouldn't have been changed.

What about only allowing the top 3 teams from each district to advance to the playoffs?

Here's my thinking:

Give the #1 seed from each district a bye in the first round and have #2 and #3 seed from different districts play for a chance to take on the #1 seed. This would cut down on the blowouts in the first round, while also providing more exciting first games/

More importantly, they would be rewarding the top team from each district for having a great season by giving them an automatic pass to the second round.

By doing this, it would put more importance on who got the #1 seed in each district.

I slightly like to prefer the playoff format it was back in 2005 IMO.

Any system that puts teams with losing records into the playoffs is broken. Six classes for 200+ teams? That's just silly. Ohio has six classes for 700+. Three or four classes are plenty. A state title will really mean something then. A sixteen team playoff bracket in each class to crown a champ. Brackets consist of district champs plus X number of wild cards.:Thumbs:

This is an interesting thread with some interesting ideas.

But the playoff system is not going to change from where I stand. A large majority of the football coaches like the current system. Some do not. But a large majority like the 6 classes (easier to win a state championship) and like the opportunity of saying they made the playoffs. Plus, they also like the additional week of practice, even if it means they are going to get beaten handily in the first week, as it helps them just a little bit prepare the retunrnng players for next year. And if the football coaches don't support a change, it's not going to happen.

Years ago, I'd have said if the basketball powers pushed the KHSAA to go with only the top 2 football teams in each district (thus eliminating a week of the playoffs and getting the football players on the hardwood a week earlier), it would have happened. But football has become too popular and too powerful in Ky for basketball to push football around. Ironically, the change from 3 to 4 classes in 75 and the change from 4 to 6 classes in 07 is one of the reasons football has become so powerful in my opinion.

as for the refs they have to travel out of region. making the schools pay moore for the refs. i know raceland payed one ref 140 odd dollars. because he traveled from hazard.

Have the same six classes. Just have the winner and runner-up go the playoffs. I know this hurts districts such as the one Letcher Central is in because there are several good teams but it cuts down on the mediocrity in the first round. I would settle for the third place team to go. Absolutely no fourth place. You could let the district winners have a bye in the first round.

You had teams get into the playoffs in the 4 class system with sub .500 records, no district wins and no wins at all. In 93 the 4 seed that had won one game (Bullit Central) beat the 1 seed. So under the 4 class system you still had the same things happen but there is just more of it now.

but isn't fun to see a #4 seed upset a #1? Look what Simon Kenton did last year. #4 seed made it to the stae finals

I like the 6 classes. I like that we have 6 State Champions. Really who does it hurt that 2 more teams get to celebrate a championship. IMO I do see a few things that can be tweek. I have always thought that 4 teams per district was to many, take the top 2 teams to the playoffs. This will make the playoffs 1 week shorter. Make the post season special, and mean something that is earned and not just given to them. Anyway this is my 2 cents worth. [attachment=o1774]

I'll take 5 classes with no #4 seed. District champions get a bye with seeds #2 vs. #3 in the opening round. Eliminates many un-necessary games (#1 vs. #4) and rewards the district champion. For what it's worth...

I like this! Would only be fair for all the teams.

If there going to keep the 6 class system then they need to change how they do their seeding. There are too many undeserving teams that have made it into the playoffs! For example: Caverna 1-9, Jenkins 1-9, Todd County Central 0-10, Knott County Central 1-9, Webster Co 0-10, Mercer Co 1-9, Southern 1-9, Madison Central 0-8. I could keep on going but i just wanted to list the worst of the worst that made it into the playoffs. Of course every one of the listed teams lost in the first round by a blowout via the #1 seed. They really need to do something about this because personally even a 3 win team shouldn't make it in. So what i think they should do is either let the top 3 seeds in and give the #1 seeds a first round bye or only let the top 2 seeds in but that would probably cause way too much controversy. If you wanna keep 4 seeds in the playoffs i personally think they need to go back to the 4 class system.

KHSAA> YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS SUGGESTION. Reward the 1 seed with a first round bye, best format yet. Need to take a look Mr. Tackett. Too many 70 points scored games in the first round this year Take the top 3, B.S. for an 0-10 or 1-9 team in the playoffs.

4 classes are fine,but all the private schools need to be put in a class by themselves much like tenn. has done.the public schools have a hard time competeing with the private schools in 6a.the reason its not been done is because its a money thing.i for one would like to see some one else win the 6a or 4a title every year other than Trinity or ST.X.Its not a level playing field for the larger schools in ky.

Fine they way it is. In all other sports in the KHSAA every team makes District tourny.
