KY Route 23
#1
Just thinking this evening about some random football things.

As anyone else noticed the amount of success of the KYHS football programs that are on or just within a couple miles of Route 23 this year.

Prestonsburg- 11-0 (1sr round win vs. KCC)
Lawrence Co- 11-0 (1st round win vs MCC)
Sheldon Clark- 7-4 (1st round win vs. Russell)
Johnson Central-7-4 (1st round win vs. Scott)
Allen Central- 10-1 (1st round win vs. Pineville)
Shelby Valley - 8-3 ( 1st round win vs. Leslie)
Letcher Central- 9-2 (1st round win vs. Mercer)
Pike Central - 6-5 (1st round win vs. Fleming)
Pikeville - 6-5 (1st round win vs. Jenkins)

It has just been just a great year for EKY football. Schools like Allen Central and Pike Central winning their first ever playoff games. Shelby Valley winning only its second. Letcher continuing to establish its self as a KY 5A power. Lawrence county from 1-10 to 11-0. Prestonsburg going through a brutal schedule and still coming out with a perfect season.

The players on this highway are great football players, not just for EKY but for the whole state. I will be very intrested to see how many All state players come outa this region.

Micheal Burchett
BJ Roberts
Josh Peck
Aaron Mcguire
JJ Jude
Dillion Hughes
J Jamerson
Logan Johnson
Bradly Stafford
Tanner Tackett
Austin Mckinney
Taylor Ratliff
Nate Dillion
The Crowders
Austin Stepp
Mike Chandler
Larry West
and the list goes on and on.

There truly is an elite amount of talent in the area, and has shown this season.

Good luck to everybody this week.

You also forgot to mention Ashland, Russell, Raceland, and Fairview.
#3
Raceland 7-4 (First Round win vs. Lynn Camp).
Ashland 9-2 (Lost in first round in top 5 in 5A most of the season)
Russell 5-6 I think (please correct me if the record is wrong) First round playoffs. Off season for Russell, usually goes deep into the playoffs, two state titles, Head Coach that has won around 300 games.
All of these school are located on U.S. 23 as well.

Kudo's IceBox, that took some creative thinking.

If you follow US 119 from the WV border until it ends in Pineville you have similar results:

Sheldon Clark (US 119 barely touches through Martin County) (7-4)
Belfry (8-3)
Pike Central (6-5)
Pikeville (6-5)
Shelby Valley (8-3)
Letcher Central (9-2)
Harlan County (8-3)
Harlan Ind. (6-5)
Bell County (10-1)

Additionally, every school district which touches the highway made the playoffs if you include East Ridge, Jenkins, and Pineville.

This has been some interesting fact finding.

#8

Great Post Iceboxx. Might add Zach Burgy Vanhoose (Pikeville) k/p to that list. The kid is excepionally good. Just a soph. & fun to watch.

I live in Danville and to be honest I get frustrated by all of the "in the Mountains" posts that are on here. Nothing against the mountains mind you (my mother is from Feds Creek in Pike Co.), I've just never understud the need to separate the mountain teams in all of the discussions. That being said, I love this post!! How cool is it that you have so many good teams along that one stretch of hwy. Good for them.

Big Five-O-,
Are you speaking of KP @ Sheldon Clark? If you are, unfortunately he has not had a good opportunity to perform up to his potential, for he has been hobbled with a broken foot and has missed, I think, four games, and saw only limited action this past Friday @ Russell.

And, if you aren't speaking of the aforementioned KP, this one has a pretty fair future ahead, for he is a sophomore.

Thanks

Speaking of Burgy Vanhoose at P. H. S., great future ahead if he remains healthy & attends training camps, etc.

Great post! I don't think people realize how much talent there is in EKY and this post shows and proves just that!
#14
you listed Larry West but no Shane Pack?

Why do you assume that people outside the mountains think there is no talent in the mountains? I don't read any posts on here to that effect.

#22
Shane Pack is a load to take down. 1,455 yards and 26 td's
#23
When writing this the third name down is meant to be Shane Pack...just a typo on my part. Belive me, I wouldnt have left him off the list, ive seen him in person.

Could a mod change it for me.
