I completely agree and Scott being able to compete with Johnson Central and being able to put up 41 on them also seems to go a long way in confirming that theory as well.

wow, crazy how people were talking about this Ashland team as an "all-time great" team such a short time ago..
#6
Very much as I predicted. Ashland at the beginning of the year had big holes when they scrimmaged Campbell County. Just knowing how well Dixie competed, I did not think this would be a challenge for the Colnels. No disrespect to Ahsland, but they were not as talented as billed. Dixie was a class better.

Ashlands good season comes to an abrubt halt, as Dixie comes into Putnam stadium, and routs the Tomcats, that is a tough region that they have to go up against in the playoffs.

If you put Ashland in Dixie's district, they'd be a 3 or 4 seed. Put Dixie in Ashland's district and they'd be a number 1 or 2 competing against Johnson Central every year as well. Congrat's Dixie and good luck next week.

I love it!! For Ashland to get dropped in the 1st round.... Sweet!! For Ashland to get drilled 27 points......PRICELESS!!! I'm only sorry I missed Dicky crying and fumbling for excuses.

Ashland needs to start scheduling schools of their size and caliber to prepare them for the playoffs. That wouldnt of beat Highlands anyway next rounds so this game really has no meaning. Ashland schedules area schools taht are all smaller then them, they beat them by 20 or more and think they have an all time team. If a 5A school doesnt finish 9-1 in regualr season with a week schedule like theirs then that school is a joke. Ashland does this every year, well when they even make the playoffs, Hart needs to stop bein scared and schedule more games that will actually prepare them for November and on. Who cares about a good record if you go out in the first round?

Very nice win for Dixie. I am glad to see them pull this one out.

I kinda agree but usually Russell is a good quality game for Ashland. But I do agree They need to get rid of Greenup County and pick up one of these wheelersburg, portsmouth west, wayne,wv just like Russell does as well.
Belfry and Russell should stay as they are usually top 3a schools and can usally hang with the big schools on most years. Russell should have beat 6a Simon Kenton at Russell Simon won in the last minute on a pass.
#15
Ashland should get a game home and home 2 year contract or more with one of the better schools in nky like ryle or even simon kenton this year would have been a good game to get ready for the playoffs and give you an idea of how you stack up against the nky teams.
#16
Tough loss, I was hoping to go up and watch that game next week. Oh well.

Ashland has been down the last few years, actually I think all of NEKY has been down the last few years overall, but especially Ashland for a school of their size and tradition. They have some dandy classes coming up all in a row though, if they can keep things together I can see them competing with Highlands in about 2-3 yrs, Im gonna bookmark this so I can bring it up then Smile

There was some Ashlands posters putting down the NKY teams before this game, but NKY teams had a great night in the playoffs! Good Luck to all of the NKY teams in the second round.

Northern KY football is honestly strides above northeastern KY football... Its hard for anyone in this part of the state to admit, but its just how it is. In the old 4As set up, Raceland seen it year in and year out. The first or second round would be always be against Beechwood or NewCath, the Rams' great season would come to and end, and then Beech or NewCath would go on to win the state championship. NKY has such a bigger population than we do!.. Look at Boone County alone, there are three 6A schools in that one county! (Boone, Ryle, and Conner)... Not to mention Kenton County and Campbell County. Its just hard to compete in that situation. Hats off to the Tomcats for a great year though!

Congrats to Dixie.

What a way to end your season! OUCH!

The playoff game does matter, even if you're going to drilled by Highlands the next week. It can be a program building win, regardless of the opponent the next week. To say that the game is meaningless takes too much away from the Dixie players who worked hard and played thier tails off. If Ashland wins this game, it would have the same impact on them.
That being said, yes they need to schedule harder teams, and yes whoever plays Highlands is going to get beat.

No question about it, Dixie is the better team.

Their offensive line was very, very good. I watched the center (#77) snap the ball and then pick up a defensive tackle on a stunt. He is very athletic, very well coached, and he played an excellent game. The only time I thought the O line didn't really look sharp was when they tried to run the counter trey. The offensive right tackle had a heavily taped ankle, and he just couldn't get out in front of the play.

Ashland had no answer for Dixie's blitzing. We stayed in the spread, and were simply outnumbered. Dixie did a good job of not only bringing the blitz, but the speed that they executed it with was sharp as well.

Dixie was absolutely prepared for Ashland's running game, and with their advantage on the line, they simply shut Ashland down. The only advantage Ashland really had was the matchup at wideout, and the fact that Dixie played (for the vast majority of the game) with no safety. Their committment to shut down the Tomcats' running game left no one deep, but Ashland did not have enough time to take advantage of it.

I actually hate it for Dixie that they have to play Highlands next week. If they had a different route, they would probably make a decent run in the playoffs.

After 6 games or so, Ashland was at +16 or so on turnovers. I said then, that sooner or later, it would catch up to them. Without turnovers, we probably wouldn't have beaten Belfry, and a couple of the other games would have been MUCH closer. Turnovers are a part of the game, but you can't build a game plan around them (not that the Ashland staff did).

All in all, the Ashland staff did a pretty good job this year. When you look at the lack of depth they started the season with on the offensive line, and then consider what injuries have done to that line, they've really done a solid job of filling the gaps.

Tough way to end the season, but in all honesty, the trip back to Highlands wasn't going to be very pretty either.

Good post.

You can't take away the value of this game for Dixie. They were well prepared, they executed, and they were the better team. Congrats to them, and I hope they play well at Highlands next week.

WOW, what happened in this one!? The loss of the season and it came in the first round of the playoffs. They're only other loss was to Johnson Central by 1 point. OUCH!! Looks like i greatly underestimated Dixie Heights. Congrats to Dixie Heights!!

Excellent post by an Ashland partisan without equal. As I said earlier, there is no real comparison as to ability between eastern Kentucky schools and northern Kentucky schools. Ashland had a fine regular season. A 9-2 record and second in the district is laudable. However, those who have suggested that Ashland needs to play some better and larger schools during the regular season, I believe, are correct. You don't improve beating up on smaller schools from your own area.

Back in October, I posted the comment of the father of an Ashland player in which he said that Ashland was just an average team but that they were doing well because all the other schools around the area were way down. He was probably right.

Squid's last statement really sums it up well. Playing Fort Thomas at Fort Thomas (or even at Putnam Stadium) would have been reality at its worst.

The comments about the schedule have some merit, but I think exFootballer was closest to the right answer. Ashland should schedule a home and home with one of the northern Kentucky teams, just to get used to the speed and style that they play.

If anyone thinks that the quality of football played in northern and northeastern Kentucky is equal, then they simply don't know football. Football is (and always has been) a numbers game. If you pick your team from 400 kids, and I pick mine from 200 kids, you have an advantage. Simple. The overall quality of coaching is better in NKY, in my opinion. We have some solid coaches in this end of the state, but from top to bottom, NKY has an advantage there, as well. This isn't just true of head coaches, but entire staffs. The result is that, if you play only eastern Kentucky teams, they will not be as prepared (week in, and week out) as your opponents would if you played in NKY.

In my opinion, Ashland's schedule really isn't that weak. Three conference games are dictated, and Ashland played Belfry, Russell, and Ironton - all of which are quality opponents 95% of the time. This season, Waverly, OH, was supposed to be a very solid opponent, but they did not live up to their billing. That leaves three games, and over the last five years, Raceland has been all Ashland wanted (and more). If you commit to a home and home against someone like Dixie, it would only leave you with it would definitely be an upgrade, and would help the staff determine the true strengths and weaknesses of the team.

Boyd County and Greenup County were the two games that could be considered "upgradable" (for lack of a better term). I know that Boyd is down, and they really don't show anything bright on the horizon - but it looks like that rivalry has been supplanted by Russell, Johnson Central, and Ironton. Maybe it's time to look at that as a chance to upgrade, until the program gets back on its feet.

I was thinking the same thing Ashland needs to drop Boyd and Greenup and if they continue to beat Raceland by 30 and 40 they need to drop them.

I would like to see a Sheldon Clark Ashlan match up

I doubt it will happen because Sheldon Clark isn't consistantly a top team in 3a like Russell and Belfry.

Although I think it could have been a good game this year.
