Ashlands Angel Gurule For All-State
#1
Hey saw this on BGP and thought i would start it on BGR Here are Angels Stats

34 (rec) 651 (yds) 72.3( yds per game) 5(tds)
These do not include the catches or yards Angel received when he broke the Ashland records against Boyd angel is a outstanding Athlete and deserves recognition state wide so get on here and get his name out there

He had 3 recs, 80yards, 1TD vs BC for a total of

37 receptions for 731 yards (73.1 ypg) and 6 TDs

Angel may honestly be the best receiver in EKY. Those numbers are amazing considering the fact that his QB has only attempted 129 passes this season completing 83 of those. If he was in an offense that had passed 250 times already this season like the other schools with leading receivers in the state you could make an honest arguement that he would have nearly 70 receptions and 1400 yards.

I think it would not surprise me if he ended up getting it he is one true football player. without him and many other WR people would be ian who?

I think he's a great kid and a great receiver. Unfortunately, I just don't think his numbers are high enough to get All-State consideration. Maybe honorable-mention. The bad thing is that All-State is VERY political and the voters almost NEVER see eastern KY teams play. They simply go on numbers and friendships. One good example: Mark Messer (no disrepsect to the kid) made 1st team All-State as a punter and missed over half the season!

Here is a list of the top 25 receivers in the state. It ends at 73.6 YPG. Angel has 73.1 YPG.

Here is a list of the only team's in the state with a leading receiver that have within 47 attempts of Gurule's team.

Ashland - 129
Somerset - 129
Newport Central Catholic - 139
Highlands - 136
Warren Central - 151
Heath - 100
Paul Dunbar - 158
Crittenden County - 119

IMO, these are the only receivers you can compare Gurule with by numbers alone. It wouldn't be equal to judge him against receivers whom have QBs who have thrown nearly 200 passes or more unless their numbers were 150%-200% higher than Angel's.

Sponge Bob brought up a great point about politics. Lets compare.

Highland's Ben Guidugli was considering an automatic bid for all-state this season and will probably receive that honor this season. Let's compare numbers. Both teams have attempted roughly the same number of passes (Ashland 129, Highlands 136)

Player, School G Rec Yds P-Game TD
Ben Guidugli, Highlands..............10...35....863....86.3.....3
Angel Gurule, Ashland................10...37....731....73.1.....6

Both players have very equal, but contrasting stats. Ben averages more yards per reception. Gurule averages more receptions and TWICE as many TDs. I think most anyone would agree that they would sacrifice 13.2 YPG to double their TDs from 3 to 6. That's the equivalent of trading in 132 yards for 3 TDs. Sounds like a pretty good trade to me since it is 100 yards to score a touchdown.

It is sad to say that the most likely scenario is that Angel will not even get a chance at all state while Ben will be an automatic 1st team lock. That is why we are starting this campaign to get Angel's name out so he will be recognized for his accomplishemnts on the field.

I hope it works. It is unfair how many make All-State. Good luck breaking the "Winchester Wall". Many have tried before. Remember the Cats championship team of 1990? How many from that team made All-State? ONE! Juan Thomas. That was a joke.

I would vote for him, he's like hines ward for the steelers not a lot of chances but when he gets the ball watch out

I think he could get honorable mention, since a player only has to garner one vote from an AP member publication to get that.
I was impressed with Gurule's play relative to his competition, but I think it would be quite a stretch to put him among the top six to eight receivers in the state.
He is quite a good player, though, and an outstanding post-season could go a long way toward establishing the credentials necessary to receive the recognition many believe he deserves.
Out of all the receivers in the eastern part of the state I have seen this year, he stands out starkly.
