Late touchdown pass spoils Ashland comeback, 29-28

PAINTSVILLE — All the speculation that Johnson Central was having a down year was emphatically erased on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles upset Ashland 29-28 on their home turf with a play that will be remembered for a long time in a game that will be considered an all-time classic in the series.

Ashland marched back from a 22-6 halftime deficit to score on three consecutive drives and took a 28-22 lead.

After Johnson Central’s second fumble of the second half, Ashland looked to increase its six-point lead.

However, the Golden Eagles’ defense responded, stopping Tomcats quarterback Sam Hunter short of a first down on fourth-and-two.

With 6:30 remaining, Johnson Central put together a bundle of key plays, including a pass from J.K. Hall to Nathan Curnell that was threaded between two defenders for 25 yards.

Ashland (6-1) fought back to put the Golden Eagles in a do-or-die situation after Trent Hardy came up with a huge sack.

Johnson Central (3-4) needed a play to win it.

Golden Eagles coach Jim Matney and crew gambled and it paid off. Ross Sanor, a sophomore quarterback, came off the bench as Hall, who played quarterback the entire game to that point, became a wide receiver.

Sanor took the snap on 4th-and-10 from the 13-yard line and looked for Hall. He let it fly to the back of the end zone and Hall leaped up and snatched it out of the air, landing in the last inches of black in the end zone.

The extra point by Trent Davis put Johnson Central ahead by the eventual final score.

“We actually used our timeout and drew that play up on the spot,” Matney said.

“They’re not a team that throws the ball very much and they ended up winning on a pass,” said Ashland coach Leon Hart. “That’s kind of ironic that they put their backup quarterback in and threw to their quarterback.”

Matney was impressed with Sanor off the bench.

“Can you imagine that?” Matney said. “Fourth down and you come off the bench and make a perfect throw? What kind of pressure is that?”

Ashland still had 1:42 to work with, but its best chance to win was negated when Hunter’s pass to Trey Rogers was broken up. Rogers beat his defender down the left sideline, but Hall flew over to hit Rogers as the ball arrived.

“Hall’s the best player on their football team,” Hart said. “He covered a lot of ground to come over and knock that ball down.”

Hall helped jumpstart the Johnson Central offense, which rushed for 151 yards in the first quarter.

J.J. Jude and Hall each had long touchdown runs which were followed by two-point conversions to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 16-0, in the first quarter. The two together tallied 178 yards on the ground.

Ashland and Johnson Central split six-point scores in the second quarter with Hunter on a three-yard rush for Ashland and a one-yard push by Tanner Bratton for Johnson Central.

Bratton and D.J. Ousley provided punctual plays for the Golden Eagles to prevent a Tomcats’ score before the half.

According to Hart, the first half was the worst Ashland has played all season.

“We executed poorly in the first half,” Hart said. “We didn’t do a good job of tackling and didn’t match up with them physically.”

The Tomcats turned the tide in the third quarter, with control of the clock and the ball, using 20 plays to gain 136 yards on two combined drives that took more than eight total minutes.

Senior Josh Alber scored twice in the third period. He finished with 93 yards on 19 carries and helped Dom DeMartino and Connor Swift lead Ashland’s defensive effort.

“The kids showed a tremendous amount of courage and it was a tremendous effort to come back like we did,” Hart said.

The go-ahead score was a 25-yard TD connection from Hunter to Rogers in which Rogers slipped two defenders to reach paydirt.

But it would be trumped by Sanor and Hall.

“This is one of the classic games in my 28-year (coaching) career,” Matney said. “That tough schedule did pay off.”

The game gave Ashland its first loss of the season, and put the Tomcats at 0-1 in the district. Johnson Central has won three straight games after losing its first four and is 1-0 in the district.

I would like to compliment the Tomcats. You have a very good team. Very good athletes at the skill positions. Ashand never quit no matter the score. Alber is everything advertised. I think Central did a good job of wearing him down with gang tackling when he carried the ball and making sure that someone hit him every play when he was on defense. I was on Ashland's sideline and from near the end of the 3rd quarter till the end of game he played on desire. I was really impressed with #74. He played hard all night and begged the coaches to put him back in after he got hurt. They did and he immediately made a big play. I could not mention all the Tomcats that played well. They had a team effort.

To all the doubters. Johnson Central is not a bad team. We have been critized for our record. We have and continue to play, one of the toughest schedules ever. The strength of the schedule will be more obvious come playoff time. Congrats Eagles. Enjoy the win and prepare to face Woodford.

We got what we deserved after not showing up to play in the first half. JC was ready to go from the opening kick off. Tomcats had a lot of trouble executing the passing game, and D-fence in the first half. Congradulations JC on a game well played. Players on both side never quit. Outstanding pitch and catch on 4th down for the win. great field, but the music is overkill. Maybe if you cut it in 1/2 or 1/3. Good luck the rest of the way.

Just got home from the game, you arent getting rid of the BADCAT that easy, 29/28 Tomcats have nothing to hang there heads about flat got beat first half. Thats definetly the best 2/4 team I ever seen. Good game JC. Congrats on a hard fought win. My Tomcats came up short after a great comeback. Got to give credit where credit is due, You guys are way better than advertised. 42/44 lived in our backfield, we picked it up second half played a great 2nd half, had the chance several times to put it away but made some bad decisions. I couldnt believe we threw 3 times from inside the 3 yd line right before the half IMO bad call with a timeout? That really hurt, but then they come out 2nd half on fire an look like the team we are used to seeing. Gutsy performance late in the game by JC the quarterback made the plays when he had to! Still dont like the music selections though, but hey thats my opinon along with most of the people on the vistors side. But believe me it doesnt affect the game just the attitudes of the visitors. Jude can fly man, never did find those hamburgers? went looking at halftime with my BADCAT shirt an all but all I could find was giovannis pizza. It was good though. Awesome field nice place thought they couldve splurged a little more on the score board though. All in all a great game by both sides very competitive and hard hitting by both sides. Even though i was on the unfortunate side, this was a great game to watch, both teams played with great heart. ashland clearly dominated the second half. and jc the first. it didn't get ugly and that made my evening. i would like to also commend number 1 on jc's team, one of our players was suffering with cramps and he didnt think twice about rushing to him and stretching him out. thats awesome......ON THE OTHER HAND.....the music has got to be the MOST IRRITATING THING i have ever witnessed at any sports function. I left with a helluva headache and I wasn't even in the game! Beautiful facility. Just cut the freakin music.

Great game jc! I was there,and Ashland just broke off some big plays on some long 3rd downs. The reffs were horrible Ashland held all night. I cant remember one play where anyone slipped because of field conditions. The rain had stopped some time before the game ever started. I dont think the game was effected at all by the weather.

Albers is definately a very fine running back. Very quick and strong. Not necessarily blazing fast however. I thought that Rogers did a great job too. In all honesty though the fastest player on the field was JK Hall, and I think that overall JC had better team speed than Ashland. I think that was the big shock to Ashland along with the fact that JC was a lot more physical than what they expected them to be.

Ah, come on now, lets address the real problem here and not blame the music. If you rode with BADCAT to the game, I can understand where the headache came from. WOW!!! Cannot believe this game, definitely an "Instant Classic." JC dominated the first half and a missed call by the officials (a clear fumble recovered by JC that was given to Ashland) changed all the momentum that allowed Ashland to get back into the game. However, the Eagles persevered and regained the lead in the last 1:30 of the game and stopped the Tomcats on their final possession. A great game played by two good teams, both never quit and left it all on the field. The BEST team won this game and it was evident...congrats to both teams and especially the Eagles...you are now in the driver's seat of the district!!!

On a side note, heard today that P.R. Greer was at home and doing well....praise God that no players or individuals were hurt during this amazing contest.

Here's all I'm going to say about the afore mentioned music, I think everyone noticed the absence of it before jc scored in the first quarter then it got noticeably louder an more frequent on through til halftime? Start of second half music as before but then suddenly it got eerily quiet until the end of the game when they were driving an made some big plays it started up again. The reason I bring this up is, if in fact that music is for all the fans from both sides to make the game enjoyable as Kimble claims it is. then why the silence when we scored twenty two unanswered in second half? Seemed pretty biased to me. I think that it is clear why it is done, one more time the actual music is fine iactually like the pump up music between change of possession any thing like that I love it, it's the songs where certain words of it are cut in to make it apply to a bad play or whatever that had just occured. It also interfered with the announcing of the game couldnt here what they were saying when the music was playing an trying to talk at the same time. Had no effect on the game what so ever but IMO still it is in bad taste when it's not dished out evenly! Makes the press Box seem like more of a bully pulpit.

I disagree it was an upset because ashland was 6-0 and johnson central was 2-4 with ashland ranked in the top 10 in 5a. It all depends on how you want to look at it.
