Holmes is same school that won the boys basketball state championship this past year.

They were in 5A last year with Highlands, Covcath, Dixie, and Scott but dropped down to 4A this year.

Their district consists of them, Bourbon Co, Harrison Co, Pendleton Co, and Franklin Co.

They have decent size up front and have a stable of fast, athletic kids on both sides of the ball. They like to run the spread offense to utilize their speed and athleticism offensively, and defensively they run a 3-5 that mimics the Patriots defensive scheme. They were a little overmatched in 5A because of their enrollment being one of the smallest in the state for that class, but with the re-classification, they will be a solid 4A team. Before moving up to the big school districts, they were consistently one of the top 10 best 3A (current 4A) teams in the state year in and year out.

Refered to a lot as Covington Holmes. They are very athletic but still trying to find an identity as a football program. I would speculate they will have a chance to win the district they are in.

I never remember them being 1 of the top 10 in the "old" 3A??????

1990, 1991, 1992- teams had some success. Beat Highlands two of those years.
Dixie wasn't much then

Late 90's early 2000's they were a very solid 3A team. Heading in to the 2003 season (Brandent Englemon's senior year) they were preseason #2 or #3 in the state for 3A. They made the second round of the playoffs I believe 4 years straight between 99 and 2002. In 2000 they had the third best record in 3A at 9-3 and also finished 2nd in the district of Highlands, Covcath, Dixie Heights, and Scott.

The drop to 4A will help Holmes tremendously. One of the biggest reasons the program started to decline was they jumped from 3A to 6A when they re-classified. Holmes had 2 losing seasons in a row and the numbers started to decline. If they can win a district championship this year or host a playoff game (both very possible), you'll see the old Holmes' football program return to what it once was.

Actually they only jumped to 5A. They were in a district with Cov Cath, Highlands, Scott & Dixie. They learned there were some errors in their enrollment and petitioned the KHSAA and were allowed to move down.

The way it sounds they maybe a really good solid 4A team... I'm shocked that Lawerence Co and Rowan Co West Jass is doing as good as they are from last season... Looks like some programs is on the rise in 4A alot more compitition now, but I love it!!!!!!!!!

They will do good in 4A.

Holmes is a tough call. Covington is no picnic and there are a lot of distractions for kids growing up in the school district. If they can keep Coach Lickert in place and get the right kids in the right positions, they could be a playoff threat in 4A year in and year out. Lots of ifs in that, but the potential is there. The basketball team alone should be enough to tell you that the athletes are there, but the challenges of a tough inner-city are also present.

You're right...they were 4A then jumped to 5A when they went to 6 classes.

When they were 4A, their district consisted of Boone Co, Campbell Co, Conner, Dixie Heights, Ryle, Simon Kenton, and Scott. I believe it was the largest district in the state at the time.

That lasted for 3 years and then they jumped up to 5A and were in a district with Highlands, Covcath, Dixie, and Scott for 2 years and now they're back in 4A.
