At this point in the season, there are still several players that can be mentioned as far as being worthy.

I don't see how anyone can throw names out without mentioning Austin Collinsworth or Highlands or Miles Simpson of Simon Kenton.

Andrews- Ft. Campbell
Fugate- Breathitt
Patterson- Central
Simpson- Simon Kenton
Collinsworth- Highlands
Those 5 will be tough to remove from the top of the list but I can name several players who deserve to have their names thrown nto the ring, two off the top of my head:
Michael Burchett- Pburg, has been a standout for the surprising Blackcats. May be the best pure passer in the state right now. He has led Pburg to pair of huge "upsets" and has revitalized a team many people expected to be down into a 2A Title Threat.
Thomas Varney- Belfry, This kid literally does it all. He is averaging over 150 yards rushing, he catches the ball, he has played QB some, he is the punter, he is the placekicker, he returns kicks, he plays DB on defense (and is a darn good one), and I even think he he cleans the stadium after the game

With his season ending injury, I hate to say it but I would assume Quan is out of the running.

I would say Collinsworth is at a disadvantage because he is on a team with quality players and his number of carries will be alot less than the others. He also will not be left in games to "pad" his numbers like some players. It is still too early to put anybody on top at this point.

Unless someone puts up monster (like 4000 rushing yards monster) numbers, someone from Louisville/Northern KY will get this like usual.

With the amt of players getting injured, its anybody's guess who will get Mr. Football.
09-10-2009, 08:24 AM
Miles Simpson - SK

The list isn't narrowed to 5 until later in the season. Those guys (Fugate, Patterson, Collinsworth, Simpson, and Andrews) are the frontrunners but not the final five

Fugate has to be the front runner if he has a good year, just based on the numbers he has put on over his career. Mr. Football is supposed to be a 4 year award!!!!!!

No!, It's the player of the yeat award.

Austin Collinsworth will win Mr. Football...you can quote me on that if you want.
The kid has 536 rushing yards on just 47 carries and 12 td's. I think he's more than proved what all the preseason hype was about and why he was selected as one of the best RB's in the state without ever seeing a down.
He has put up the following numbers thus far:
v Manual- 14 carries, 66 yards
v Ryle- 13 carries, 124 yards
v Beechwood- 8 carries, 161 yards
v Withrow, OH- 12 carries, 185 yards

Breathitt could turn things around and Channing could still finish with a great season. If Breathitt did win or finish runners-up again in the 3A Championship Fugate would have to be a consideration for Mr. Football.

At this point in the season; Rees MacShara - Boyle County.

Antonio Andrews, QB (Fort Campbell) Stats through 5 games:
Passing - 32 of 56 for 526yds, 9 TDs and 1 INT
Rushing - 598yds on 47 carries, and 11 TDs

Is it too far fetched to say if Thomas Varney keeps going the way he is going, he deserves to be on the list? As far as Matt Raines from my bobcats. not had a big enough career or year, sorry Matt. And I really dont think Mr.Fugate should be considerd, he hasnt done nothing.

Although Belfry is considered a "small" school compared to many of the others, I think they should look throughout the entire state.... NOT just at the bigger schools. As far as Thomas, I can promise you that they would have to look hard to find another football player out there with the heart, dedication, work ethic, and all around enthusiam he puts into practice, NOT even mentioning the games!!! He is a good kid who tries hard and it shows on the field every Friday night!
