......

Pirates trailing 20-17 with under a minute to go and on their own 25. Thomas Varney lines up at QB and takes a direct snap and busts a 45 yard run. Pirates then sputter and face a 3rd and 15. Varney returns to QB, drops back, is under heavy pressure... reverses field and throws on the run to a wide open receiver for the TD. Belfry gets assessed a 15 yard penalty for celebration, Varney then kicks the long XP to force LCC to have to score a TD to win.

On the ensuing Varney kickoff (are you sensing a theme?) the LCC player breaks into the open field and is on his way to a TD when he is stopped by guess who? Thomas Varney. Pirates intercept the Johnson pass and seal the deal.

Great game... don't look now but Belfry is getting better and better as they knock off the #5 5A team on the road.

If this Belfry team has anything, they have heart!
#11
Hats off to LCC as well. Cougars played their tails off and proved they are legitimately one of the top programs in the mountains. The young QB played well and the LCC defense played their hearts out.

Belfry needs to build off this win and take down Whitley County and Pikeville, then they get into the district slate. If Belfry can stay healthy there is no doubt in my mind that they will improve enough by the playoffs to be right in the mix to be the East representative in BG.

Is it possible this is the best game I've ever seen? Wow, Thomas Varney! Is anyone this versatile?

The only other kid in the state who is in the same ballpark as Thomas for his versatility is Collinsworth at Highlands. Thomas may not make anyone's short list as the best RB, but anyone who doesn't consider him one of the best football players in the state has clearly not seen him play. He is doing all this against good competition as well.

IM glad i attended this game...I agree with all your statements.
Great road win for the Pirates and good showing fro the cougars.
Thomas Varney was well worth the price of admission!
Congrats Belfry!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Belfry on a good come from behind win. Good Luck Cougars on the rest of the season. LCC is also a young team with a bright future. Belfry will be a team to be reckoned with the rest of the season as they have a classy coach who keeps on winning.

Belfry down 20-17 with a couple minutes to go with Letcher Central on the Belfry 25. This one was over and a big turnover gave Belfry life. LCC has to be just sick.

Thomas is truly amazing, Gary is a beast.at FB, so is Nate, Timmy and Chase are excellent. We've got a stable. Check out the freshman Payton Mullins, 2 fumbles recovered I do believe, awesome game. Can't wait for Whitley. I'm postng this via blackberry, still stuck in parking almost an hour later. Pretty nice place to play football though.

Way to go Pirates! This is a huge win on the road for this team....If Belfry can stay healthy, this team will be right in the thick of things in the playoffs. I'd love for them to line up and play Prestonsburg again....

Not to brag, but we have some of the best fans around. Hopefully we have the return game next year at the Cam and you can come over and tailgate with us. BTW, good luck to LCC the rest of the season.

People do not need to wait until his career is over before they appreciate this kid. He is such an old school type of player. Earlier this year. he punted against Boyd County and it went -2 yards. Tonight he kicked pretty well. Timmy Lovern moved a bit too early on one of Thomas' punt and it ended up not counting, but he boomed a punt from his own endzone that went 60 yards in the air and rolled to the Cougar twenty. On the next punt, he kicked it 51 yards. The final touchdown pass was unbelievable. His abililty to scramble was amazing and how Corey Charles got so wide open was unbelievable. I have watched Belfry football for well over thirty years but this game was amazing. Letcher Central deserved a better fate than what they got. They showed a lot of class and desire and we were treated as good at LC as any place we have ever been.
