what makes belfry so good 3 years running

Tradition has to play a big part. After the first Championship and exp after the second, the players work that much harder because they know that they have big shoes to fill and don't want to be a let down to the community.

they complete all assignments

At Belfry we expect to win. Our tradition speaks volumes about our program. Belfry football runs generations deep in some families on Pond Creek. Now that we have won 2 State Championships, the bar is set that much higher. Success breeds Success.
I think we have one of the best and classiest coach in the state in Philip Haywood....The man is a football wizard. Him and his staff takes a group of boys each year and makes them into men, He makes them into Champions...
That's just a few of the reasons Belfry is Belfry year in and year out.

I think Belfry is as dominant as they are for alot of reasons. First off they style of play they use. Belfry runs a ball control offense and is capable of keeping opposing defenses on the field for a long time. They keep it very simple and run similar offenses from the time they are young. The style they use also is quite predictable, but nearly unstopable. The fact of the matter is that if Belfry dosn't stop themselves (penalties, turnovers, mis-comunication) then your probabley not going to stop them. They always have big, strong, & physical lines and backs that are athletic and as hard nosed as anyone in the state. Second thing, Belfry is EXTREMLEY well coached. They are always very well prepared and seldom ever make mental mistakes. They approach football games almost like a job and love every second of it. Haywood and his coaching staff take their job very seriously and do a wonderful job. Finally the last reason is they are Belfry. This is a football community that raises football players. They love contact and have football minds. Their crowd is always pumped and into games and the entire community backs them every step of the way. Thats why I think Belfry is as dominant as they are, and as successful as they are.

It's an honor to see the respect towards the Belfry program. You will never see a Belfry team coached by Haywood run up the score on a weaker opponent. To quote sportwhiz, our kids do have a great work ethic and failure is not an option.
If you've ever noticed, they wear face paint in every game. They treat each game as a must win game no matter if the opponent is Magoffin County or Henry Clay.
We also have a great community and fanbase. Their support has meant so much to the Belfry program. I have never been to a Belfry home game that wasn't packed out. Heck, alot of times when we go on the road, we outnumber the home teams fans.
Being a part of something this great is a big part of my life. Belfry High School was there for me when my world fell apart and for that they have a place in my heart and I will always be grateful.

I really can't add anything that hasn't already been mentioned so I will take a slightly different approach and say why THIS YEARS TEAM is so good:
1. Talent- though VERY young this is an extremely talented group of players. Just look at our sophomore class.... if Belfry was senior laden this year then our JV team would just be flat hurting people.
2. Attention to Detail- this team has been progressively improving every week and surpassing everyone's expectations...they have went from a pre-season pick to be a .500 team and a 2nd seed in the district to a 8-2 team and a favorite to make it to Louisvlle.
3. Scrappiness- This team is by no means physically imposing, but they are one gritty bunch of boys.
4. Big Play Capability- When Jones and Howard left I, among others, felt we just didn't have the ability to break a big play but Matt maynard has single handily changed that and Chapman and May have also assisted.

One of the reasons Belfry is so good is because they get better every week...heywood is the best at making his team better week-in and week-out!

Exactly fox.
The boys play with so much heart in EACH and EVERY game. They have an amazing coach, in my opinion THE best and his staff is wonderful. They have established a tradition that cannot be matched by anyone in this area. It took so many generations to get the program where it is today. It is in the family's bloodline, in their surroundings in the community, in their hearts. They have sat and watched their brothers, cousins, and friends play when they were children and have fell into the want for the game to be like past players. They know the game and do everything that they can to achieve their full potential. They take lots of pride in what they do.
I have the upmost respect for the coach, staff, players, parents, and the community. They have great respectful fans and they support their boys 110%. I cannot wait to see other teams around the region, espically my own, develop into something that special. I will support Belfry's team in their championships, love to see them bring another win back to the mountains.

Coach Haywood deserves a lot of the credit. He motivates his teams to over achieve and he takes teams and gets them to realize they are a team a family and something you all should see is the support from the families alumni and former players. When you have a coach thats had the success that Phillip has had there it lets the lower grades learn the system and come to high school ready to play not ready to learn the system. I think when you look at the Belfrys and the Pikevilles and Prestonburgs and Paintsvilles and the other teams that are good year in and year out have this in place. You gotta see Belfry all week not just on Friday nights to appreciate what they have accomplished. You have to admire them.

One time a great man/great football coach (think 8 state championships/approximately 177 wins) told me a story about Phillip Haywood . . . .
He pointed and said: "That man always wears a suit to their games and always wins football games. That, my friend, is a great football coach"
Coaching, coaching, coaching. Belfry also has a great staff (aside from Haywood). And, as already said--winning is the expectation. That goes a long way on a cold, rainy night in November.

Not just for the past 3 years, Belfry has been a powerhouse for the past 5-10 years.
