Russell 2009
whats the QB postion looking like? i heard that dehoff is there now? at the passing league tournement it looked as if Russell had a new QB running there second team with size he looked as if he knew the position and had a good arm?

that would be a 1st for east ridge
They return a lot of talent. I wouldn't doubt a 7-3 season.
Ivan is fair, Sparks will get the nod and if he does fine it is his to lose. Dehoff does have an arm on him but when does Russell need the strong arm QB. Russell bread and butter is the running game and the bootleg is the pplay that the QB has to run effective, and Dehoff is a very strong player and will flat run over ya. I think he will be the Qb before it is all over with. But don't be surprised that Russell will be running pass paterns more this year.
Sparks should get the start he has put his time in with the program and I think he will do a good job.
The kids will step up. It's the head coaching that has been at fault the past 2 years.
It takes a combination of players and coaches. When those two elements have good chemistry, a lot of good things can happen, even with lesser talent.
Russell used to be in a 2a district with Lloyd and Newport. They had a really good quarterback by the name of Ramey.
I f we do throw the ball this year who is gonna catch it?? just Rogers or who else?
jgrubby Wrote:Do you think it's time for Russell to step up to the new era of Football? That is to prepare these kids for hurry up offenses and use of "clock management". The wing T is arguably one of the best at teaching steps in blocking and running assignments. The fundementals that it produces has always been noted. But why not mix it up and introduce the spread, "the wildcat" etc...? Some of our area's teams have greatly improved but some haven't. I believe its due to coaching inabilities for those who haven't been able to make it work. The wing T only works when you have the players/atheletes who can do it. If they can't what kind of offense can? I only ask out of curriosity.
Last year was a disaster. The coaching was awful. The team lacked leadership. This was a team that had no real direction and they played that way. Lets hope this is not to be repeated.
Last year's team was TOO many I,I,I's and nothing to do with team. Like the old adage says "THERE'S NO I IN TEAM" and that is what the problem was, but this year is a new year and hopefully a new ATTITUDE that they DID NOT have last year.

I agree....last years team just didnt gel. The coaching was good in my IMO. Sometimes you will see the coaches make an odd call and people in the stands start moaning, even myself but if you listen to the post game on the radio Ivan normally explains his actions and it most always makes sense.
Maybe last year will benefit this years team by saying hey guys lets not go down that road!
hope they rebound, i loved getting them back last year but love closer games
The only ATTITUDE, I would like to see this year is TEAMWORK. With teamwork anything is possible, get to the ball at all times with a since of urgancy and play every play as if it were the last down and the game depended on it!
RUSSELL RED DEVILS
Practice starts Monday. Should be an interesting year. This group comes in with more questions to answer than any other team over the past few years
You're right, FBall. I look forward to watching this year's team play, though. If they can find some players to hold down the defensive tackle spots, then I think they at least have a chance to be as good as last year's team. I know a lot of people don't expect much from them this year, but I think they have a chance to be pretty good. They have several players who have a lot of experience.
So the expectations are a team about as good as last years team?
I would say that the expectations are as high as always. The difference is the unknown factor. Last years team came in with more experience but a questionable attitude. This years team comes in with some talent and a better attitude but there are alot of unknowns.
7-3 at best but can see 6-4 legit.... I do say that we can improve enough to beat Mason given we learn from our first round mistakes...... We may be district runner ups but I can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Is this just a semi-down turn in talent (last year and now) or were the 4 or so years previous just an excellent run for you guys in Flatwoods?

I'm not trying to be critical, but I am used to Russell being a SERIOUS threat to win it all. Last year that was far from the case. Sounds like you guys are lookin at another season of the same. Just a dry stretch or something a bit more?

Everything goes in cycles. Last years team was talented but had a terrible attitude. They were not as talented as previous teams but should have been much better than they were. This years team I would expect a better attitude from.

Every school has dry spells. Russell will be a good team but not a great one.
Russell has one of the best staffs in the state. This year's team hopefully has some good leaders with great attitudes. The sophomore class will have to play a major role for the team to be successful.

The sophomore class will step up, they have what it takes to be successful. They have a positive attitude and don't give up in any situation, and they all play with heart.
I agree RUS1234, now that we say that ,, they better live up to OUR words.....RIGHT!!

Has 2 a days started yet or are we doing them this year I really see no point in them.
Two a days has started this past Monday. What do ya mean no need for it. They should be doing three a days to get last years stuff shackin off this team. Discipline, Discipline, Discipline, and it needs to start from the head coach down. If the coaching staff show discipline it flows all the way down. Play the players that will play AND NO FAVORTISM. When the kid steps out of line and brings disgrace to the team, Marron & Gold, and school. SEE YA NEXT YEAR. But this will not happen and the other players see it and there goes your program. Step up and be a COACH and the leader of the team. The coaches set the example and the ship will follow. :devilflam:devilflam:devilflam
Anyone know how practice is going?
The thing with teams like Russell and even Raceland...a down year for schools like that are usually at least a decent winning season. It will all come down to how good they are on the line and that won't truly be known until the season begins. I don't think there are any Josh Gross's, Kasey Clarkes's or even a Drew Abrams', but some kid may suprise the Red Devil fans. Either way I say the Devils get at least 6 or 7 wins this year. I don't see them beating Ashland or Ironton, and Raceland and Mason County may go either way.

You very well be correct in your prediction. A Gross and Clark only come around once every 20 years or so. Russell has been blessed over the past 10 years to have numerous backs that ran the ball very well. Russell won the big games on the line as you indicate. Don't be a bit surprised to see several backs playing on the line this year. The Russell offense depends on how good the line play is.

I think Russell will win more games than we think. I have a good feeling that all the cancer has been removed from the team and we won't see it back. A bad attitude can ruin a team. The 2008 team had as much talent as any Russell team in the past ten years. The problem was they had no positive leadership on the field. Enough said.

Now heart and a positve attitude can make a good team play better than they are. I for one do not feel that the 2005 team was the best team in the past ten years. I think the 2002 team was the best and the 2004 team was right behind them. Only problem was that Belfry and Breathitt had good teams those years that played great.
