CHICAGO (AP) - Milton Bradley's temper tantrum was one too many for
Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella.
Piniella told the mercurial slugger to go home Friday afternoon after Bradley threw his helmet and went after a water cooler following a fly-out in the top of the sixth inning of the Cubs' game against the crosstown rival White Sox. Piniella told him to take his uniform off, and the two exchanged words in the tunnel leading up to the Cubs' clubhouse.
"I don't like those things to happen, but I'm just tired of watching it," an agitated Piniella said after the Cubs' 5-4 victory. "This has been a common occurrence, and I've looked the other way a lot and I'm tired. I'm not into discipline, I'm really not. I'm going to put his name in the lineup tomorrow and that's it."
Piniella didn't get specific about whether he was tired of Bradley's antics in particular or those of his entire team. Pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster both went after the drink dispenser in the Cubs' dugout at Wrigley Field earlier this season.
But Bradley, playing for his seventh team in nine-plus seasons, does have a long history of being volatile.
"It's something I promise you won't be happening again," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.
Bradley has already been suspended for one game this season after arguing with umpire Larry Vanover when he was called out on strikes with the bases loaded April 16. It was his very first at-bat at Wrigley Field after signing a $30 million contract during the offseason. The umpire crew contended Bradley's hat made slight contact with Vanover.
With San Diego in the pennant chase in 2007, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he was spun to the ground by Padres manager Bud Black, who was trying to keep him from umpire Mike Winters. Bradley claimed he was baited by Winters, who was suspended for the final five days of the regular season and didn't work the postseason.
Bradley was suspended twice during the 2004 season. He drew a four-game penalty in June after tossing a bag of balls onto the field following an ejection. He was suspended for five games in September after slamming a plastic bottle at the feet of a fan in the right-field seats at Dodger Stadium after someone threw it on the field.
He had been traded to the Dodgers before the season by the Cleveland Indians after having a dugout confrontation with then-manager Eric Wedge during spring training.
He also criticized then-Dodgers teammate Jeff Kent in 2005, saying Kent couldn't deal with black players.
Bradley was not in the clubhouse after the game. Hendry said he planned to talk about the incident with Piniella, and the two would meet with Bradley before Saturday's game.
"Obviously today what happened was disappointing," Hendry said. "I'm not going to ever have a player hear something from the media or on the radio before I speak. But we'll have the conversation, that's for sure, before tomorrow and hopefully we'll move forward and put some of our troubles behind us."
Bradley has been clearly frustrated by his offensive struggles since coming to Chicago. After going 0 for 3 Friday, he's hitting .237 with five homers and 16 RBIs.
"We'll talk about it more tomorrow," Piniella said. "I'm not happy this thing happened, I'm really not. At the same time, it was time."

the Cubs do not need this and if this is what he (bradley) is gonna do then they need to trade him and get rid of him.

Glad to see that a coach has finally stood up to Bradley. This guy has been a cancer with every team he has been with.

Dead On SD, the cubs need to get rid of him bc all he is gonna be is trouble, trouble, trouble and they dont need it.

It's a shame, he is talented. Every coach beleives they can "fix" him. It's pretty similar to TO.

Both...no offense K-King, but the Cubs fans are among the biggest whiners in all of pro sports. Always blaming their failures on something. A goat, Bartman (which if anybody watched that game, the Cubs CHOKED), anything but the Cubs. Listen Cub fans, your tradition is already etched in stone. A good year every couple of seasons, a solid overall record no less, mixed with some 4th and 5th place finishes the other years, dont make you the Red Sox. Your '77 season you were 25 games over .500 (47-22) and finished 81-81, lol.. I mean, chalk it up to the biggest bunch of chokers in pro sports. Youve not even come close very much to blame anything on a curse. YOU JUST SUCK. And yes, this is a Pirates fan (who have had 16 straight losing seasons) giving you the what for. But even we have managed to win 5 world series since your last one! Go get em Milton! Earn that $30mill!! So yeah SD, Im not real partial to the Cubs or most of their fans, and no K-King, this in no way includes you, lol..

It's truly sad to go to a Reds game during a Cubs series and see more Cubs fans in a Reds stadium than Reds fans.

Its fun going to Steelers-Bengals games there too, LOL..I remember in '97 I believe, that there HAD to be 40,000 Steeler fans out of the 61,000 there that day. It was pathetic for Cincy..Ive been to 11 Steeler-Bengal games in Cincy, and theres never been no less than 25,000 black and gold fans there..its great,lol..

One of the reasons why I gave up season tickets. It got to the point where season ticket holders were buying their tickets, selling the Home Browns and Steelers ticket, and virtually recouping their total cost. Amongst the consistent losing, I just opted out rather than sit at a Pittsburgh and Clevelan home game in my stadium!
