If your team makes it further in the play offs, dont think I wont be jumping on th jc train. On a Statistical sidenote and update:

QB Ian Holbrook (SR) has moved himself into 4th place on the Tomcats all-time yardage list (rushing, passing, receiving) with 3802 yards. He still trails Tomcat great Arliss Beach by 1269 total yards for first place all-time. If the Tomcats make a deep playoff run, I look for this record to fall around the 3rd or 4th playoff game, if they make it that far.

QB Ian Holbrook (SR) has moved himself into 2nd place in total yards passing all-time in Tomcat history. Holbrook has 2866 yards passing. He trails Tomcat great Ryne Salyer by 51 yards for 1st place all-time. I look for this record to be broken this week against Johnson Central.

WR Drew McDavid (JR) has moved into 7th place on the Tomcat all-time receiving yards list with 679 yards. He trails David Gifford for 1st place all-time by 488 yards. I look for this record to possibly fall next season as McDavid returns for his senior season.

WR Drew McDavid (JR) has moved into 7th place on the Tomcat all-time pass receptions list with 40 total catches. He trails David Gifford for 1st place all-time by 29 catches. Another record I look for McDavid to possibly break next season.

WR Angel Gurule (SR) has moved into 4th place on the Tomcat all-time pass receptions in a season list with 31 total catches. He trails David Gifford for 1st place all-time by 5 catches. I look for this record to be broken in the next few weeks.

Congrats to these great Tomcats of Autumn.

Nevermind any of that, disregard my comments about him, as to the topic of this tread, I would like to see Ashland come out on top.

tomcat68 Wrote:Those are very strong words. I don't know him personally, but as a coach I absolutely despise him, too. He did some very embarrassing things to Ashland my freshmen year that cost me to lose a lot of respect for him. I think he is a great coach though. It just seems as though his ethics were very wrong that night. I don't know if it was a one night happening or if it was a normal occurance.

Then the following year our game fell on the week of the 9/11 attacks. His team was doing very poorly that season after graduating nearly 25 seniors the year before. The entire state was going to continue playing football that weekend. He on the other hand, refused to make the trip to Ashland and play. Instead he tried to not play us at all that season. The only problem with that was that if we did not fufill playing our district schedule, it would have ruled us ineligible for the playoffs. Finally the KHSAA ruled that it would be a forfeit game unless his team made the trip to Ashland to play the game. In turn, we were forced to play varsity games on Monday and Friday of that week.

I understand that he may have been trying to give his team every opportunity to sneak by the radar and get a victory. In my eyes though, and many of the Tomcat faithful, it was done entirely under the wrong circumstances of 9/11. Maybe there were other reasons that were unknown to our community, but without that knowledge, it seemed very, very tasteless.
we were not the only teams to play that monday
and what is really tasteless is that after the game some of the coaches on the sidelines and in the pressbox were saying over the loudspeaker hey fatass shut the hell up fatass to a coach of sc's who also happens to be a preacher and a very good man now that is tasteless
well if coach matney was a jerk or a bad sportsman then why did he kick 7 field goals against a team that was in no shape to be playing us?? good sportsmanship that's why the attempts weren't even on 4th downs

this is not directed to you tomcat68 the incident about the loudspeaker was done after the game while we were the only ones on the field
just sayin that matney is not as bad as everyone says he is you just have to know him

Why doesn't he have sportsmanship? Showed it 4 times this year already!!! Against Beckley, WV; Logan, WV; Boyd Co, and Greenup Co!

Beckley------scored 35 points in 1st quarter and end up with 52. How does that happen? By running up the score?

Logan-------69 points and going for the extra point for 70 and tells them to kneel it so we don't score 70. Had a few minutes to go in the 4th quarter so we could have easily broken the school record for points in a game (72) but we didn't.

Greenup------takes most starters out up 31-0 in mid-3rd quarter and final was 43-21.

Boyd-------up 47-27 and get the ball back with 2 minutes to go in 4th quarter and kneels on it instead of trying to go for more yardage for a certain "anonymous" player who already had 420 yards rushing.

SO, STILL THINK HE HAS NO SPORTSMANSHIP????? :wtf1:

I know you weren't quoting me JCRunningMachine#17 but I just wanted to make a point. It does seem as though nowadays Matney has done a much much better job of showing sportsmanship than it seemed to me in the past. The only point of yours I don't see eye to eye with you on is the Logan game. Most people that I've ever spoken to and mentioned kneeling on the PAT attempt, is almost a unanimous decision that it is a much larger slap in the face than if the team had practiced their kicking game or practiced a 2 point conversion play.

The problem would not have been if it had been the following Monday after the 9/11 attacks. The problem was that he refused to play the game until over an entire month later after the KHSAA had to step in and ordered the game be played or that Mr. Matney's team receive a forfeiture. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14 and was not played until Monday, Oct. 15.

As for the loud speaker incident you mention, I would be the first to apologize if this were true. That is an absolute disgrace for any person to show that kind of disrespect. Our team normally leaves the field as quickly as possible to get back to our locker rooms at the high school, so I would not have been around to hear this incident. As I said before, if this is true, I personally apologize for whomever made those ignorant remarks.

i am pretty sure that it wasn't a coach but it came over the loudspeaker after the game
other than that incident the sc ashland game has been a great game for both teams over the past few years especially the 02 game!!! the drive

No doubt about that. It was a great game that all fans wanted to see and all players wanted to play in. Too bad SC moved down to 2A the following year, I'm sure if so much bad blood hadn't been made in such a short time that the rivalry would have continued. You all had a great drive to win that game. I still have dreams of that catch in the corner of the endzone. We actually had you held at one point but one of our players made a bonehead mistake and hit I think Nathan Moore, the QB, after the play and we got a personal foul. Either way still an all-time great ball time. It's just sad to be on the losing end.

It downpoured in Ashland for a few hours last night but from what I have heard and seen, the field was in relatively good conditions considering the only night this week a game hadn't been played on it was Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the rain that was predicted for this afternoon and throughout the evening seems to be coming true, it is downpouring again here in Ashland. As well as Holbrook has done passing in poor conditions, this has to favor a more ground oriented attack.

Should still be a great game tonight. I hope the rain doesn't keep anyone away and prevent these kids from the playing experience of a lifetime with a district championship on the line, a packed, screaming house of fans in historic Putnam Stadium, and a great game.
