Who would you like to see replace Ironton on Belfry's schedule next year?
#1
I dont know who they will play in Irontons place, but I hope it is a team on the same level. This game has been a great test for the Pirates over the last 11 years serving as not only a measuring stick but also helping the team regain focus. The timing of this years final contest is perfect as this young team prepares for thier playoff run. I sure do wish we could have been more competitive than 1-11 but hopefully we end the series with a win. Who would you all like to see on the Belfry schedule next year?

This one for me is easy. Johnson Central.
#3
that would be a good one QQ.... i was thinking maybe them or ashland

Ashland is also losing Ironton on their schedule next year due to Ironton alligning into an Ohio Conference. There has been ALOT of talk in Ashland of replacing Ironton on the schedule with a "AA Powerhouse". Some rumors I have heard, and some intuition I have used, suggests that Belfry and Ashland are in talks of meeting next season.

Some teams off the top of my head
-Ashland
-Bell County
-Highlands
-Boyle County
-Johnson Central
-Rockcastle County

ashland would definitely be a great replacement, we have a 2-13 record against them so yeah they would be a tough test for the Pirates:rock:

Id say theres a good possibility this game will happen. Since both teams drop Ironton. Why not pick each other up.

You wouldnt like to see JC and Belfry play? What would be wrong with that matchup. I think it would be an excellent matchup. Both teams can run the hell out of the ball.

I wonder if Beechwood would consider playing Belfry?
#17
Ashland, Johnson Central, Bell Co., Powell Va.,Beechwood, Boyle, Pulaski Southwestern and Somerset would be some of my favorites.
#18
i wood like to see them play Johnson central
#19
Don't know if Ashland will happen. there is some bad blood between the current Ashland AD and a former Belfry AD
#20
Johnson Central would be a good replacement this year but year in year out would they be as good a test as Ironton has been???
Maybe so???
Ashland would also be a good one.

First of all you won't see Belfry play another 2A team for fear of meeting them a few weeks later in the playoffs...any talk of Breathitt, Corbin, etc won't happen.

Also, I don't think Belfry will schedule any 1A team because with the exception of a select few (ie Beechwood, Danville, NewCath) 1A teams in general aren't able to conssitently stay on a top tier level.

The purpose Ironton serves is more than just a solid team.... Ironton is a team that on a year in year out basis Belfry is the underdog coming into the game. No offense to Pulaski SW or JC,,, but on a year in year out basis Belfry would probably be the favorite. The Pirates need a team that is a step beyond them so their weaknesses are exploited.

Secondly, when Belfry advances through the playoffs the majority of the stronger opponents are one of two styles of offenses.... either strictly pass (Breathitt, O-Cath, Etown) or strictly run (Russell, Ft. Campbell) .... thus you wanna play one of these types of teams. Ironton perfectly fit the mold of a power football team and really had us prepared for Russell as well as Pburg's physicality.

My personal opinion is that Bell County would be our best bet,,, its two top tier programs with similar styles, legendary coaches, and a rivalry renewed. Ashland is not perenially a better team than Belfry, but economically speaking it would be an excelelnt decision.

Other possible teams: Charleston Capitol (WV), Danville, Rockcastle County

I think a team to replace Ironton if you are wanting to play a team with similar styles would be Bell Co. They are both smash mouth teams (just like Belfry) and both are very well coached. It would also help Belfry prepare for long road trips they may see in the playoffs.
JC or Ashland would be good games as well, but not the caliber of Bell IMO because the trips would not be as rewarding, and the styles are not the same smash mouth styles they would be facing against Ironton or Bell. Both of these teams are capable of playing Belfry very close on a yearly basis, but I don't see either having the record Ironton has over the Pirates in the same span of years.
Another thought would be to schedule a strong team that runs the Wing - T to prepare them in case they face Russell later that season and since so few teams in this area run it. I can't think of a team off the top of my head, but I think it could pay divedends in the end.

ashland owns a 13-2 record against the pirates

Bell Co. vs. Belfry
Johnson Central vs. Belfry

Both games would be worth well over the price of admission.
