That's why I said he needs to add 20-30 lbs. of muscle ( Big Grin ). 6' & 190 lbs. would be fine for high school level OLB. He's a sure tackler already, but the extra oomph would take away that extra yard or two big RB's get on smaller men.

If he has the kind of year he's capable, I could see him recruited to play strong safety on Saturdays. It would be the ideal position for him, IMO. If P-burg used a 5-2, Coach James could put him there next year and let him defend the run on both sides of the field...

I think P-Burg will be pretty good next year. I do agree in that I thought this would be their year to go a little farther. Next year isn't lost though. I've seen P-Burg teams under Derossett before in practice and it looks to me like he always has intense hard working practices. This too depends on senior leadership which helps on days when some players would want to be somewhere else. This happens at all programs. Hopefully those few seniors returning will fill that role.

He is 6'1 and 185lbs. And for someone so "small" he had 176 tackles.

Anyone that can put up 174 tackles and finish 3rd in state in tackles has all state wrote all over them IMO.

If they can maintain the level of leadership i saw this past season then it could be another great year.

I think the blackcats will be a powerful team like they always have been but the middle of the road teams like bath co. and valley everyone talks about should have call the shots with p'burg this year which is a very competitive district 7. Its Bath counties year. Go Big Red.

That is what everyone said about SV last year. So keep dreaming.

hammertime Wrote:There is no Chase Harmon from Pikeville. There is a Daniel Harmon who is a 4.5 forty guy when healthy. But I don't know that he was healthy all year. He had a bad knee from the Allen central game on.

Harmon wasnt healthy, he had to come out a couple of times in this game because of his knee

How's the Sophomore and Freshman class look like?

Two current freshman and sophomores to be Alex Garner & Joseph Jamerson received serious varsity action last season, so both will play major roles this upcoming season. Several others should step up as well, but none will play as big of roles as the two mentioned above.

I'm not to familiar with the upcoming freshman class, but that class does have a star in the making coming up in Bryson Williams.

Hopefully someone with more information on the both classes will be able to provide more information.

Freshman class from Adams will provide some help. Williams could be very good. Jacob Chaffins has some nice speed and played tailback and DB for me last season. Derek Newsome has good size and could help on the line. Several others (Fred Hicks, Tommy Osborne and Kinsey Vandine) have good size ! Remember these names : Tyler Keens and Austin Reahard (Will be 8th grade this season)

I really think Prestonsburg will be hurting in the 2009 season. They lack size even more than they did last season. I've heard the possible running back's could be Josh Craynon, Brad Little, Austin McKinney, Josh Blackburn, and Kayne Collins. These are all fast athletes, but all lack size and bulk (except for maybe Collins). I'm not sure how good any of their footwork is or how well the read and see the gaps because none really carried the ball enough last season.

Who is going to step up at Wide Receiver? I know of Joseph Jamerson, whom is a long and athletic player. I thought he needed improvement on his route running, though; and making the habit of looking the ball in when he is making a catch. He is a decent blocker though. I can see him improving this offseason. Other than Jamerson, I really don't know who the receivers will be.

The O-Line and D-Line will be small but quick. Alex Garner will probably be the biggest of them all and he is only a sophomore. With the lack of size, will John DeRossett have to move Austin McKinney to the D-Line instead of playing Line-backer? Hopefully there are some good young players that will step up on the Line.

The Quarterback situation is fine with Michael Burchett. I think he will have his best year as a senior and be a fine leader if he stays healthy.

The defensive back's will be Prestonsburg's strongest position I think. They will be quick, athletic, and experienced with Josh Craynon and company.

As for the younger players, all I know of is Bryson Williams. He is expected to be a future star and I think he will turn out in a couple of years.

Good luck in '09 Prestonsburg.

^ Solid summary for the upcoming season.

A lot of question marks for the '09 Blackcat team.

Watching the Blackcats the last couple years, and how they depended on the Seniors that are gone leave alot of question marks? So much size and bulk gone,on both sides of the ball, bulk with experience, may hurt. The backfield with Setser,Craynon gone, creates more challenges, and at receiver with Gearheart gone opens up even more opportunities for improvement.Seniors gone all over on both side create a few problems for John, but he has some good young talent coming up,and it may take a year to develop that into workable talent.I hope they do well, and Mckinney will do well on D,but his help will be scarce, and on O,hope the line can protect Burchett.THEY will have to work very hard to get ready for the tough schedule....who in the world made that for this year?Anyway,Good luck Blackcats hope you win them all this year.:Cheerlead

Well said, springballfun.

Would love to play P-Burg one time. Maybe next year at our Alumni Bowl.
#59
From what I've been told two big guys have come out for the team. Both played their freshman season, both are over 6', both weight over 240, and their both very stout.

Hopefully they'll stick with it because the line will need all the help they can get.

sounds good.
