Sizes of Schools in the Sweet 16
#1
1. Eastern - 1936
2. Graves County - 1384
3. Christian County - 1332
4. Grayson County - 1251
5. Anderson County - 1162
6. Bowling Green - 1084
7. West Jessamine - 1010
8. Holmes - 968
9. Central - 967
10. Lexington Catholic - 868
11. Mason County - 816
12. Adair County - 794
13. Corbin - 684
14. Shelby Valley - 596
15. Elliott County - 332
16. Hazard - 312

Just pretty interesting to look at...I am surprised Eastern has the most students in comparison to some of the county schools.
#2
I think the 312 for Hazard may be an older figure. I think Hazard has just under 300 students at the present time.
#3
I like what you did here, but you found some old numbers, Valley has close to 700 kids now.
#4
So, do you prescribe to have Class championships or keep it the way it is?

Don't they do both. I know the all A schools have a state title a little over half through the season. Like Hazard. They go to the all A state tourney about every year and are in the sweet 16.

Yeah, these are 2006-2007 numbers...most recent I could find.

Stardust Wrote:So, do you prescribe to have Class championships or keep it the way it is?

I like the way it is. I think it takes away from the totality of winning a state championship to have 5 or 6 other classes.

If you're the best, then you're the best...if your school is smaller and just can't get it done, sorry about your luck. Try again next year. (Elliott at #15 is a perfect example...their 332 students puts them 1600+ behind Eastern at #1, yet most would consider Elliott one of the favorites to win and the same goes for Corbin and Shelby Valley.)

Atleast by winning the Sweet 16 these teams can say definitively that they are the Kentucky State Champion unlike other states where you never know what the difference is between the team that won the 5A title, the 1A title and the 3A Independent school title. (It's a little out of control if you ask me...play the game, and the last team standing is the champion...period.)

1 State Champion is plenty.

Only thing I argue with is playing the Semi-finals and the champ. game on the same day, I think that's garbage.
#9
Go Hazard !! Maybe little in numbers but big in heart !!! GO DAWGS !!!

I tend to agree. Unless there is some unforseen reason or special circumstances I don't understand where another day would hurt. Only reason I can find is that it would cost too much more money to have Rupp for another day for just one game.

Elliot County?
#14
Looks like only two really small schools in Sweet 16 Elliott and Hazard.. They have really done well..

Mountain schools usually have less kids at each school, and its in order from greatest to least, sooo....:ChairHit:

Elliott is not a mountian school.

Completely agree here. I hate to hear people say that so and so won the "All A, big deal, that's not the real state title." IMO, to shut people up and prove that you're the best there doesn't need to be a division of classes. Makes a little harder for the smaller schools, but when they do win....man, it's something to be proud of.

Well I'll tell you one thing, if Elliott was to win the "Real" state title, guess what, Valley will be the only in state team to beat them, and Valley will still have their own state title to flash.

I mean no disrespect but the All A does not even come close compairing to the Sweet 16 championship.

kybaseball Wrote:I mean no disrespect but the All A does not even come close compairing to the Sweet 16 championship.

I know it doesn't, I'm just making a reference, saying if Elliott wins out, Valley was the only in state team to beat them, and that would be saying something in it's own.

According to our principal, Hazard has 286 students in the top four grades this year! We are really proud of our school and consistently rank in the top percentage in most activities in which we compete. For instance: fifth in academics for 2007 and 2008; in the finals in Class A in football; sixth in the state in the state band competition; won the regional basketball tournament three out of the last four years; and the list goes on. Not bad for such a small school!

Stardust Wrote:So, do you prescribe to have Class championships or keep it the way it is?

i like it the way it is. it makes it alot harder for the smaller schools but it also makes it more special. the way it is right now we all get to play at rupp arena. if we go to class championships then we will have too many schools and will have to spread it out. i say we keep it the same.

What is the number of students to qualify to play in the all a classic i thought it was 500 or less does anyone know?

This topic was discussed until it was beaten into the ground a few weeks ago. The All-A Classic uses their own criteria, which only includes students in grades 10-12. As for the exact cutoff point, I'm not sure.

That would be awesome for a small school to take down the Lexington, and the Louisville schools.

I agree it don't, but it probably would have mean't more to you if EC would've won it wouldn't it?Confusedhh:

Can't believe one of SV biggest braggers don't know enough to defend his team!!!!!!!!! The cut off this year was the 125 smallest enrollments in the state to my understanding. Still nothing for Valley to throw their chests out about.... An enrollment of 700, long way from being a "small school" ecspecially in Eastern KY.

I think Valley would fit into it, their Freshmen class is about 150 kids I heard. That's about 550 kids in 10-12.

I never said Valley didn't meet the criteria........... But when the All (A) started, it was for small schools. Valley is a "Big School" in Eastern KY. particularly when you start talking all "A". They are a very, very fine team, but don't let your prejudice overrule the truth!!!!!!!
