Mountain Officials

Are any gonna be calling in State Tournament? Hopefully if the 14th sends one it will be Glen Napier ...He is the 14th's best.
#2
The 14th Region representative this year in the state tourney will be none other than, Brian Cook. Glen would also of been a good choice, but after some of his actions lately, will be lucky to be calling anymore.
#3
You gotta be kidding! Brain Cook? How did he pull that off. What happened to Glen?

I just hope the Louisville teams don't get hosed this year by the out-in-the-state officials. That is really my only fear, Eastern has all the talent in the world, and I have faith in them. Its the other factors that can determine games that worry me.

Just want a fairly called game, if the officiating is terrible, make it so on both ends.

That's a rarity in the mountains.

Its a rarity here in Louisville too...but it has happened a few times this season. I'm sure we can all guess which said they're going to favor at Rupp. But that is an annual occurence.

A story from Chris Renner about a game Ballard played in a Rupp a few years ago backs up the assumption. The game was coming to an end in a tight one and Ballard wasn't even in the bonus, Renner said "Come on ref, we're not even in the bonus yet. and the ref replied with "nope and as long as I'm officiating this game, you're not going to be." The game went into OT and Ballard never did get into the bonus.

Now thats bias...haha

You know, as parents and fans, we expect the refs to call a fair and consistent game. We know that they will miss seeing some things, but when the call is made that is 180 from the correct one, teams get affected, fans get involved, and the opinion about the refs goes amok. The solution is so complexed because of so many variables present that there seems to be no answer at this time. I suggest that a better training procedure be started, recruit younger people and pay more money for a better product, and get everyone consistent on how to make certain calls. There will be pros and cons to what and whoever have opinions, but we all want the same results.

Most officials in the 14th never even played the game ( Hutton, Napier, Campbell are exceptions and it shows because year in and year out they are the best officials). A lot of what are calling now were "wanna-be's" back in their day and they have little knowledge of the game. The training sequence is pretty lame also. Pay a fee--take a test (open book) and you are an official. I might suggest that referrees go in front of a panel , view a video-taped game and make the calls. The committee could rate them and at least you have a test that is live. Or have the prospective officials officiate scrimmage games and have the committee grade them. It would be easy for each region to set up it's own screening committee and have the people who want to ref, call summer games. That way the committee could grade them and we might actually get rid of the "good ol' boy anarchy that exists with the assigning secretaries of each region. The mountains is notorious for this. in the 14th --the assigning secretary actually works for one of the school systems. You can bet your bottom dollar that the school coach gets who he wants calling his games. Backfires ocassionally though---like this past year

He did work a lot and had a lot of lunches in Knott County this season!

And the Glen story, it's a long one. His actions at his son's ball game were a little much.:devilflam

i thought the 15th region refs were bad until regional tournament. because the 15th had the 13th officials and they were horrible. and not on both ends every game they had a favorite and they stuck with it. i don' know if that was just that tourny or if the 13th officials are always that bad.
#13
Good Luck to all officials of the 13th, 14th, and 15th region.

You people always whine, from Paducah to Pikeville, from Covington to Williamburg. All you have to do is do this and do that, you are a ref. I don't think so. You have to have hours of training, now I agree some do much more than others but the one's who end up at Rupp, they are the best of the best. I do know that they do some type of camp now that cost well over 300.00 and to make it to Rupp, you have to have the camp. I don't agree with that but that's the way it is, control by KHSAA. As far as being better because you played the game is not entirely true. I know plenty of high school and college officials that never played high school ball but are regarded tops in their profession.

As far as Glenn, he apparently thought the officials in the Scott/Lafayette game was terrible and voiced his opinion in THEIR locker room. He has a temper, I do know that he was ejected from a baseball game last year and refused to leave the confines of the field. I think he was released from his post-season assignment.

Cookie, a top official.

As far as someone from the Great LOUISVILLE area think that officials from the mountains cannot call, that is a huge understatement. Your the same fan who goes out and whines during regualar season games as well due to a poor officiated game. These officials that are in Rupp are highly monitored and evaluated in the region, this is the greatest show on earth in all of the US, we send the best.

As far as the 14th assignor, I agree, he needs to GO. I know some officials who does not call due to him and he will not let some call because he cannot control them.

The Great LOUISVILLE? Did I make myself out to be high and mighty? I don't think so.

I also said nothing about mountain officials being incompetent, the 7th region officiating this year was some of the worst I've ever seen. I just said that like most of the rest of the world, unless your team is in it everyone likes the little guy and in most cases hates the bigger schools. I like to refer to it as the "Hoosiers" Complex.

Sitting there and denying that there are some officials that will call the state tournament games who will favor the smaller state schools over the Louisville/Lexington schools is laughable.

How about the 13th region ref representing us. I hope its Chad Allen. Anyone know.

Can you imagine Brain Cook and Chud Ellen calling in Rupp together....the 3rd. wouldn't need a whistle....not a chance of getting to blow it!
#18
I agree Captain Crook. Those two like to be "SEEN". A great official is one who you can't remember 30 minutes after the game because he did nothing that stands out in your mind. His calls are the obvious ones and have no disagreement by players OR coaches. Too many ref's today believe they are the center of attention. They need to realize that the fans came to see the players--not them. And as to "FIRECHIEFS" comment about the "best of the best at RUPP. That may be true of some regions , but here in the 14th it usually comes down to the best"brownnoser".

"brownnoser" and money. i have talked to assitant coaches that have admitted here in the 14th that refs are paid off. that is pathetic, that a highschool ball game is decided by the refs. whatever happened to the best team on any given night, wins the game.
#21
Guys, you need to have proof before getting on message boards and talking and disrespecting refs that don't make that much money to ref a basketball, football or baseball game. If you have problems with refs, take a test and start becoming an official yourself. The KHSAA is always in need of good officials...... step up to the plate or quit whining about them

Why dont the assistant coaches go to the KHSAA and give their proof. If they are taking money to change the outcome of games, the refs can be suspended or banned.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.

I haven't accused them of anything illegal. I have a right to my opinion and just because you don't agree with it---tough. I call it the way I see it . A few good officials---a lot that are terrible.

From what I have seen in 14th region games this year there are several better than Cook.... Larry Thacker , Glen Napier , Thomas don't know his 1st name, Tommy Hutton, and most definately Dexter Campbell... so i guess brown is the prevailing color!

I'd add Jeff Richie to that list too.

You can add him if you want----I wouldn't. Talk about wanting to be seen!! he wrote the book
#27
As far as honesty goes---I believe Dexter Campbell is at the top of a very short list. I have always thought Dexter to be head-and shoulders above the rest. High morals, respectful, and honest. that's all you can ask.I may disagree with him on a call---but I have never questioned that he makes the call he thinks should be made. There are several that are pretty good, but he would be my #1 pick without hesitation. One of the nicest people you would ever want to come into contact with also.

IF you think for one instance Thacker is on this list, I can see why you need a break from this message board. WOW! He never did get the BIG game until his Knott buddy became involved in assigning games. WOW, unbelievable, I agree, the 14th has problems, it starts with the top guy.

I am not saying they throw games but with all due respect, fans just whine, whine and whine like children over candy.

You think you could to better? You have put down every ref in the 14th .But its simple Windsprint if you think you can do better than go put on the srips and get you a whistle.
#30
Excuse me Tailback 44- I have not said anything but good things about Dexter Campbell, Tommy Hutton,Glen Napier. I haven't said anything one way or the other about many of the rest. I have only said that Cook"the Crook" was not a good official in my opinion nor is Jeff Ritchie. If you don't like my opinion---shove it-- or don;t read my posts. Are you one of the"brownies" that ref's or am I hitting a little to close to home. I wouldn't have their job--but if I did -I would do it without brownnosing my way to Rupp.
