Little olâ Burgin, a tiny school in Mercer County, isnât on anybodyâs radar as a contender to win the boysâ state basketball championship. Coach Don Irvine has said many times that his ultimate dream is to guide the Bulldogs to the Sweet Sixteen, but he knows that is the longest of long shots.
Or is it?
It may be mixed-up math, but by comparing scores a case can be made that Burgin, which is No. 188 in Dave Cantrallâs Rating the State, just might have a chance at beating Scott County in the Sweet Sixteen finals and cutting down the nets in Rupp Arena on the night of March 21.
Just make your way through this maze of basketball results this season:
â¢Holmes beat Scott County
â¢Boone County beat Holmes
â¢Trinity beat Boone County
â¢Waggener beat Trinity
â¢Campbellsville beat Waggener
â¢Green County beat Campbellsville
â¢Muhlenberg South beat Green County
â¢Bath County beat Muhlenberg South
â¢Menifee County beat Bath County
â¢Burgin beat Menifee County
Presto! There you have it. An arithmetical argument that little âol Burgin could win the state championship.
A guy can dream, canât he?

I think there are many less-than 10 win teams out there that just got some hope that maybe they could make a run at Rupp

In 1994 Hazard almost won the region and would have been 9-19 entering the state tournament!! Entering the District this Hazard team only had 5 wins. Does anyone know what is the worst record a team had and made it to Rupp? Just curious, thanks!!
