2009 OVC Small School Tourney at Lewis County
#1
I just wanted to shout out a HUGE congratulations to the LCMS 8th grade basketball team and to it's outstanding coaches in the first round of the OVC tournament over the weekend.

I am a fan of no team, just good basketball. I was at that tournament and I have to say that LC played like warriors on Saturday against West and just completely wiped the floor with them ( no disrespect intended, just an anology). From the starting 5 to the reserves, EVERYONE of LC's players played extremely well and NEVER gave up the entire game, it as though they came out to prove a point and they sure did.

Those coaches down there have done one heck of a job getting those boys ready for that game Saturday and we should look for another high octane game from the boys at LC on Thursday against Wurtland. LC has two awesome coaches who care about each of their players and take pride in what they do down there......KUDOS.

Who plays in the finals?, did they play 7th and 8th semi's this week and finals on Saturday night??
#3
8th grade semis were last night but not sure of scores. The teams remaining were Wurtland, Lewis Co., Raceland and Elliott Co. I am not sure who played who or the scores though.

The 7th grade semis were cancelled because of the storm the other day and moved to Saturday evening. They are Wurtland vs. Elliott Co and Raceland vs. Lewis Co.

Finals are on Monday i believe.

Should be a bunch of good games with all teams pretty even.

In the first game of the evening had Raceland over Elliott in a close game, sadly, number 5 went down with a few seconds remaining trying to block a shot under the goal and ended up hurt, but not sure about the nature......Hope he is okay, but prolly done for the rest of the tournament.

The last game saw LC and Wurtland in a very heated and physical game. LC came out on top and handed Wurtland it's first LOSS of the year.............I'm telling ya, those boys from LC are on a streak and they are playing great now at the right time. I think LC won by about 7 points maybe less.

So, on Monday night, the 7th grade championship will be played at 6:30 followed by the 8th grade championship at approximately 7:45. Should be a great night of basketball.

Lewis must have played very well and had a great game plan to beat Wurtland!! Wurtland is very big and atheletic and had not lost a game in the OVC.

It is a pleasant breath of fresh air to see that some are coming around to seeing our coaches are the best period.
Congratulations to both Lewis teams. They have done so exceptional this season. Good luck in the championship games.

My Raceland Rams took a hard loss tonight against the home team Lewis Co in the 7th grade game. We were down almost 40 pts at the half and that was the best team I have saw play in the 7th grade here in the OVC for quiet some time. Lewis and Elliott will be a good game in the 7th grade championship game on monday as they beat Wurtland by about 15. Raceland 8th grade has got Lewis 8th grade in the championship game on monday. The Lewis 7th grader that plays 8th will hopefully be wore down from 7th game and give the advantage to the Rams!!! Anyways good luck to all!!

It is a given the two seventh grader's will be more than ready to go against "YOUR"Rolleyes Rams this coming Monday night.
I am so proud of all the player's this season. The future looks bright for all our sports programs in Lewis Co.

How can Lewis Co. 7th grade have anything? I can only remember 3 or so players that were top notch and two of those players have transferred to Mason Co. One of the boys played ball with our AAU team for several years and I know he is pretty good but come on, is basketball that weak in that area and the OVC?

Lewis 7th grade has played very well this year(15-2). Yes, they lost 2 good players, but they have several players that our playing better because of those guys leaving. This team has played most teams that consist of the 16th region, and Rose Hill being the only loss in the region, which was early in the year(Nov.)

You must not have watched them play this year, they have the best 7th grader I have saw play, they also our well coached and have a couple others that are good players also. I don't know who they lost but I heard they lost 2 big guys that were good, if they had 1 big guy to play with this team they would be an excellent team and no one I have saw play would beat them!!!.
#12
I have not watched them play this year but I am familiar with them and just thought they would really really struggle without Mason and Johnson. I know Wade Adams and Ruckel are not bad players but I am not real familiar with other players they may have. I stand by my statement that 7th grade bball in that area must be pretty weak. I was actually feeling kind of bad for Wade because some of his help had bolted. I congratulate them on having a successful year but If they have the best 7th grader you have seen you need to watch more basketball. You wouldn't have to travel very far either.

duggout66 Who is the best 7th grader then? Lewis has very good players thanks to our coaches developing them. The one 7th grader in question may or may not be the best but they are right there with the best. He has even played on jv and has done a solid job while playing up. We would love to have the two back that left, Both are very good and talented and yes we would be even stronger with them.
There is something amiss I couldn't quite put my finger on why so many outsiders were throwing their input into almost every Lewis Co .topic. After reading everyone of them almost say the exact same thing everytime. I am beginning to wonder if we have a few Lewis fans masquerading as outsiders. Just a thought.

I am with ya on this one Liberty. The two 7th graders that plays for LC are prolly the best from "the four" from last year. They are outstanding, lets not forget that there is LOTS of talent on both LC middle school teams, thus putting them in both OVC championship games tomorrow night.

If it were not for the coaches at LC who developed and worked so hard with those boys, maybe LC wouldn't be where they are today, and those players have really stepped it up and now they are ready. I will say this, to all the "naysayers" out there, you better stand back and take notice because when these boys are sophomores and juniors LC will be strong contenders in the 16th region. Best of luck to both teams and to Coaches Ruckel and Clark, you ALL should be very proud what you have accomplished thus far.
#15
The two coaches mention have done a superb job this year. I have always stated I wouldn't trade our coaches for anyone else's.
#16
I'm not sure which player we are talking about. If we are talking about Adams then I will say that he does hustle and is as competitive as any kid in that age group. If you get outside of your area there you would know that there are some phenominal ball players in 7th grade (as witnessed at the middle school state tourny @KBA). I'm glad they are doing well but still have a hard time believing they could compete with some of the better 7th grade teams. Have they played Mason Co. ? After all of this banter I am really not qualified to comment because I have not seen them play this year. I guess it is just my feeling that the two players that left would have made them competitive but without those two I'm having a hard time figuring out how they are one of the tops in that conference etc.... And, no I am not from Lewis Co. I have just seen a few of their boys play for several years.
#17
I know a little about this situation knowing a few that are involved. The two players that left are good players and I don't believe anyone is trying to say they are better because they left, obviously their size would have helped this team. But with the 2 guards and had the big guys stayed at LC they would have potentially been very good in HS and had a chance to compete for a region title. I believe they still have that chance with the guard play they have, maybe not as good a chance but who knows. Here is my point, I would rather compete and not win a regional title at Lewis with home grown kids than to transfer and win and compete in the state tourney with kids from everywhere. As most knows, Lewis has never won the region, could you imagine the first time they do, they will never be forgotten!!!! I don't like schools that recruit and players that go to another school just because they want that chance to go to state or "better chance of playing in college". If you are good enough, college coaches will find you, goto exposure camps over the summer and play AAU, that is were you get noticed not on your high school team. As far as you dugout66, the Adams kid is a very good point guard, I believe most are referring to the Ruckel kid that most teams are having a hard time stopping here late in the year. I don't believe that anyone said they were the best players or could compete with the best teams in the state, I believe they were talking about the OVC confrence and the 16th region. This thread is about the OVC. Both of these kids are getting time on JV and coaches are trying to prepare them and the others for the future. Confusedhh:

I agree with your thoughts on playing with the homegrown kids. I don't have any idea why these two left LC but I guess you have to move on. The Ruckel kid has obviously been improving since I last saw them play and Adams is a bundle of energy, so all is not lost. I know the two that left have made Mason 7th a better team but who knows how it will end up. I do know that the Fleming Co. 7th grade team beat Mason Co. before the new arrivals and twice this year with them on the team so maybe there is hope for schools still playing with homegrown boys. Good Luck to Lewis Co.
#19
I think that the "big guys" have been very well replaced with two or three big boys on the inside this year who will go in and go up against anybody and not be intimidated at all. Good job LC you deserve to win it all and celebrate it in any fashion that you see fit.........................we are all rooting for ya.

I don't have a clue as to why the 2 kids transfered, but hasn't L.C.,lost a total of 5 kids in the last couple years? The 2 that just left and 3 that are now freshmen.Put these 5 with the Ruckel and Adams kid, then you have a shot at a state title in a few years,in Baseball and /or basketball. If I am L.C. ,I would really want to find out why most of my young talent is leaving. There's got to be a reason. But,who know's what the future holds,Ruckel, Adams,Johnson and Mason, could be playing together again in the near future.Any Takers?

I think the reason that those kids are leaving is because of Mason Co.'s success and a domino effect, but what some must realize is just because you are a dominant player in the middle school does not always give you success in High School. Something else that could happen(probably will) is who else will transfer to Mason Co and move those kids back down the ladder. MC gets transfers in on a yearly basis, some are not going to be satisfied when this happens. Those 2 7th graders could help the LC program but LC will move on with or without them, they could play varsity at LC in the next couple years or wait and play when they are atleast juniors maybe seniors at MC. Some have said they are happy with were they are at, hopefully that does not change once they play varsity sports and are stuck in that system, but I wish those kids the best!!!

Well, it is nothing to me, but just so everyone knows, LC can and did do it without the 2 transfers. Both the LC teams won the championship games in the OVC tonight. Congratulations to all players and coaches on a job well done. I'm sure that they are riding high as well they should be............

Let's be honest the two transfers that are 7th graders have high school star written all over them if they continue to grow and develope their game. They make any team instantly better they are on. I wish them nothing but good luck.As far as Ruckel goes everybody might as well quit the discussion that kid is the real deal.He could start for any 7th or 8th grade team for any school around. And is head shoulders better than anybody in the OVC. No offence meant to any other school or player but the kid can ball.

I agree kybaseball, every team that played Lewis in this tourney tried to play box and 1 on Ruckel or completely deny him the ball and double team him when he got it, and he still scored and was able to get open. Those games last night, I got there at halftime of the 7th game and I don't believe he got more than a minute rest in both games, the other 7th grader played alot of minutes also and handled the ball well. These two are going to be good playing together. Blankenship for Raceland is a good player and will be in HS, but he has to learn to play under control and keep his head in the game.

I to am a LC fan,and am very proud of both our middle school teams. But I got to be honest. We have 2 really good guards, and players that have stepped up to help us win the OVC.But if we are going to compete out in the state, with the Fleming Co's and the Mason Co's,we have to find a way to keep the talent we are losing here in LC.
#26
I have read a whole lot of comments about the transfers to Mason Co. Well, huh, we won without the 2 stars, so don't beat our kids up because they can win without Mason and Johnson. Don't you know that their is no I in TEAM. It's not about 1 or 2 kids. I have watched Mason play for years, yeah he is a good little ball player, but we proved we can do it without them. Good job LC players, all of them not just 2. It takes good coaching and good team effort. These boys had it. Our 8th grade, as a whole, it awesome, have you not followed them going to state in baseball? It's not about just a few people. Get a life. It's team and good coaching. Way to go boys. Lewis co proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you agree riverrat11. It really doesn't matter much what kind of D you play on Ruckel.Your not going to stop him.

I am so very proud of our kids on both teams, but especially the 8th grade team. They played their hearts out when no one thought that they could win, but they did and did it with so much heart.

honestly the ruckel kid isn't that great
anybody who shoots 20-30 times a game is obviously going to score
maybe if he didn't get held back like mason they wouldn;t be as talked abput as they are
