Augusta, St. Patrick battle to 58-58 tie after third power outage

AUGUSTA -- "Only in Augusta."

That was the first reaction from Robin Kelsch, the head coach of the Augusta High School basketball team, following Wednesday's bizarre game against district foe St. Patrick.

Mother nature played havoc during the bruising battle, with the winds howling outside, the lights went out in the Panthers' Den on three separate occasions, and the result of the game was a 58-58 deadlock.

The first delay came early in the third quarter, and after a 20-minute stoppage, the game resumed, only to be halted again for 15 minutes in the fourth quarter with 4:05 left to play.

At that time, the coaches and officials agreed that if the problem occurred a third time, the game would be over.

That became quite a source of conversation after the Saints stormed back to tie the game for the first time at 58-58 with 1:09 to play on a Stephen Mason basket. Following an Augusta timeout, Shawn White was fouled and went to the line for the double bonus, but missed both shots, setting up the strange scenario that ended the game.

Following a St. Patrick timeout with 38 seconds remaining, the lights flickered, and went off again, ending the game in a draw. The game's statistics will still count, but neither team will get credited with a win, or saddled with a defeat.

"You see things here in Augusta that you don't see anywhere else," added Kelsch. "But the safety of the fans and players was a concern, and we agreed after the second time that if it happened again, we'd call it. And with both of us playing so many make-up games, there won't be time to make this one up again."

Saints coach Jason Hinson concurred.

"Something crazy always happens when we come here," said Hinson. "Either it will be a last-second shot or something when we come to Augusta."

As for the game itself, the Panthers ran out to a 24-11 lead after the opening quarter, and led by as many as 14 points on a pair of occasions, before the Saints rallied, which was eerily similar to their comeback win over Bracken County on Tuesday.

In the second half, Augusta still held a seemingly comfortable 47-34 advantage late in the third quarter, but St. Patrick fought back to secure the first tie of the game on Mason's basket.

The Saints mounted a 16-6 run to knot the score, with Nick Cropper coming up with a pair of key 3-pointers during the comeback.

Augusta had its chances to salt the game away at the free-throw line, but converted only 10-of-22 from the stripe.

"We had some lost opportunities," said Kelsch. "We had that 13-point lead, and tried to get some home runs, and missed some free throws. But the kids played hard, and it was a very physical game for both sides. We played an intense first half, but we knew St. Patrick wasn't going to quit, and they didn't."

Key to the St. Patrick rally was the play of Mason and Lee Gallenstein. Mason came up with 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, and also led all rebounders with 14 boards. Gallenstein added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints.

"It was a rough, physical game, and that's two nights in a row we have had those kinds of games," Hinson said. But we didn't give up, just like last night, and we had the ball at the end, and we were going to go for one shot."

Augusta was led by Ryan Kelsch, who scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers. He was joined in double figures by Chris Mofford and Colton Fraysure, who contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The Saints are back in action this evening at Paris, and the Panthers will take on cross-county rival Bracken County in Brooksville on Friday.

That's interesting. Glad that they didn't risk anyone further by waiting for the game to resume once again.
