Keisten Jones and Logan Collier caught fire in the third quarter, enabling Ballard to blow past Iroquois 80-48 yesterday in the Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine University's Knights Hall.
Ballard, which won the last of its four LIT crowns in 2007, trailed 20-19 at halftime after hitting only 7 of 31 shots (22.6 percent), including 2 of 17 three-point attempts.
The Bruins' game changed completely in the last two quarters, when they made 23 of 36 shots (63.9 percent), including 8 of 14 threes.
"We came in at halftime and coach (Chris Renner) said we were playing good defense, but we had to knock down some shots," Jones said. "And that's what happened."
Jones, a 6-foot-3 junior, scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, including nine in the third quarter. Collier, a 5-10 junior reserve, swished three threes and tallied all 11 of his points in the third period, when Ballard (12-4) broke away from a 28-all tie with a 14-2 spurt.
Ballard, No. 8 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, hit 10 threes in 31 tries, with Jones going 4 for 8 and Collier 3 for 6.
"What I'm most proud of is we did this without our leading scorer (Wesley Cox) having a big game," Renner said. "It came down to us making shots and our defensive pressure. Iroquois used a box-and-chaser defense on Wesley and sometimes a triangle-and-two defense, but we have other guys who can make plays. Collier's shots were big for us."
Cox was held to six points on 2-for-7 shooting but had three assists. Ian Chiles had 16 points for Ballard, and Paul Perkins contributed eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Iroquois (9-6) got 19 points and 11 rebounds from 6-6 junior Donovan Gibbs.
