Holmes was tabbed as the top boys' basketball team in Kentucky this week in the season's first Associated Press state poll. The Bulldogs lived up to that billing with a resounding 56-37 win at Covington Catholic Wednesday night.
Junior Ricardo Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Holmes. His brother Jeremiah Johnson added 14 points and five rebounds as the Bulldogs improved to 14-1 this season and clinched the top seed in the 35th District tournament.
Holmes never trailed, and CovCath (4-11) never got closer than a 10-point deficit in the final 21/2 quarters.
That doesn't mean coach Dave Henley was completely happy with his team, however.
"When we started the season, these three district games were the ones we talked about more than any other, that they were the most important," said Henley, referring to earlier wins against Beechwood and Holy Cross. "But I really thought this game was more about them missing open shots than our defense. I thought we were pretty good for the first three or four passes, but after that we got lax.
"They got a lot of open shots; they just didn't make them. That is something we have to get better at. We've been preaching that message for about two weeks now, but they are full of themselves right now."
The Bulldogs, last season's state runners-up, are favored to win the Ninth Region title and return to the Sweet Sixteen tournament, but Ricardo Johnson agreed with Henley about the team needing to get better.
Holmes (14-1) - Riley 3 0 8, Slusher 1 0 2, J. Johnson 7 0 14, Pittman 2 3 7, Housley 4 0 8, D. Johnson 1 0 2, R. Johnson 5 4 15. Totals 23 7 56.
