Flip a coin Griffin. Whitesburg or MJP. If Cowan get's the Robinson kid back soon they could be in the mix before the end of the year. All three teams have solid big men and several kids that can score in a hurry. Letcher County basketball should be fun to watch this year. I wish they would have combined like the football program did this year. It's just to hard to go out and play all of the county combined teams without the best 15 players in your own county on one team.

I disagree, basketball isn't like football. Football is a numbers game. The more opportunities given to excel on the floor the better. You are running off some potential players. All kids cannot get to Whitesburg for practice each day without financial assistance or help.

Ultimately, that is what the powers to be want, but it isn't a good idea. Football only consolidated because it had too, not by choice.

UKisN1,
But you see what the results of that consolidation was for the football team (Big Sandy Conference Championship). This was something that the East/West Letcher or Whitesburg couldn't accomplish before the consolidation happened. I do agree that it would be harder for basketball and more kids would not get to play because you can only play 5 kids at a time but it would be nice to see what a consolidated team from Letcher County could do. I know that they are now playing a basketball state tournament and we usually have 3 or 4 teams playing in the regional tournament . We haven't had a team winning it yet to this point and I think that a consolidated team could win it and could go represent Letcher County in a state tournament. There are always good arguments for and against consolidation and I can't tell you which one is actually right for Letcher County. However, If I'm correct there were over 80 kids that made their way to Whitesburg daily for practice on a school bus that was paid for by the team. Parents picked them up after practice and it worked out just fine. I am sure a few players were lost but if a kid wants to play bad enough they can find a way to get home from practice. I would bet you that now that the consolidation has happened nobody would want to go back to the way it was before except those kids that were unhappy because they didn't earn a starting position and that was a very small amount of them that seemed to be unhappy. I guess that's it's a personal opinion to everyone as to whether they think consolidation is a good idea or not and this is just my opinion and thought I'd throw it out there since you put yours on here.
Ultimately I guess the county has to decide what they are trying to achieve with the Middle School basketball program. Do they want to let all kids have a chance to play and not worry how good each school is and if this is the case you keep it the way that it is. If you want to compete at the higher level which means to play in the big tournaments against the big boys and have a chance to beat them you need to look at consolidation so you can have a legitimate chance at winning those tournaments.

Philosophy is everything. I agree. AAU basketball can narrow the focus whereas, you do not have that in football.

AAU for football????? That sure would be nice. How did the the middle school teams look this weekend before the Cougars played? I heard that MJP played in a fun game to watch. Who would be your pick to win the county this year? I think it's pretty much a three team race at this point. I'd rank them something like this. #1 MJP because they appear to have more talent and true basketball players. #2 WMS because they have several talented kids but most of them are true football players and that may come around to hurt them in the end. #3 Cowan, pretty good starting 5 but no bench to help them out when they get in foul trouble. Gonna be interesting I think. Do you really think the powers that be in Letcher County want consolidation? Do you think that Coach Adams and Coach Justice wants consolidation? I'm not in the loop of basketball so I was just wondering????? If your who I think you are you will know these answers for sure. I hope you are who I think you are because if you not I wouldn't have been tugging on your chain like I was over the consolidation.

Don't overlook Cowan. Coach Justice would like to see one team, whereas, Coach Adams would like to see two or three teams.

As far as football, AAU would be great, but not possible.

Nobody wants to make a decision on it, that is why we always get into a mess and the pressure is put on the coaches.

Yeah I think Cowan may be the sleeper in the county. They will miss the Robinson kid though, I heard he will not be released from Dr. until Feb. I didn't know where Coach Justice stood on it all, I talked to Coach Adams yesterday and told me the same thing about wanting 3 teams. I like his idea with middle school basketball. A team at Letcher, Whitesburg, MJP would be nice, those three teams have really talented coaches that has a lot to offer to the kids. Manis Blair, Keith Baker, Bumper Adams are top notch coaches that could be coaching at the high school level if they chose to do so, shoot they have been at the high school level and been very successful. I think the reason I like consolidation so much is the fact that we always have a few teams that are mediocre because of a lack of talent and nobody is interrested in coaching them, at least not a certified coach with experience like the other three teams have and those kids do not progress in their middle school years and are behind when they get to high school. This county has plenty of talent but I wish they were all on the same level playing field.

I agree. All teams still want their identity. The only problem is that the time it takes to prepare them for high school. Most coaches at those other teams are doing them a disservice. Those three you mentioned get paid $1500 and start in July. Play over 25 games and practice 5-6 days a week. The others will not practice 25 times let alone play 25 games. They still get the same pay, though. Boys basketball has the same problem as girls basketball, some coaches just draw a check.

With the changes at Jenkins, maybe we can entice Brian Johnson and Jerry Bentley to coach at our schools.

By the time that the LCEAA tournament rolls around. Cowan will be the team to beat. The Robinson kid should be released by then. He doesn't miss from outside and shows a strong inside presence as well. Until then, Martha Jane Potter is the team to beat. But watch out though. Cowan is definitely the sleeper in the county. Whitesburg will have a couple big wins but they won't be a real threat in the county tournament. I am going to say it will be between Cowan and Martha Jane Potter. With the Robinson kid, Cowan takes it. Without him, it's all MJP.

Completely agree Mr. 23,
I don't think your right about the Robinson kid though, he's hurt and the coaches will not let him get healthy and I hear he's out until after the tourny. I do think that with him Cowan would be a huge threat to win it all but it's going to be MJP all the way in this county. I think there is a decent crop of boys in this county and I think it will be another good fresh. group for Coach Justice next season on the big hill, future looks bright even though there is not real big man in the group next year.

I think it is a shame that someone would just drawa check!! But I see it every day at our school. I have fought tooth and nail every year to keep boys basketball at our school.usually it ends up right before cougarama we have a coach. In the past 4 year we have had 4 different coaches,I personally asked to have our kids combined somewhere else.the whole point of these middle school teams r to be prepared for the high school level and I think we r doing these smaller schools a big disservice. They do not have the pool of kids to choose from so you end up with maybe 2 really good kids on a team. After they get there heads beat in every game they r so sick of it there is no way they r going to play with these kids at the high school level.I know that with a little coaching these kids could hang with any of the other teams in the county. But due to lack of interest u lose some really good kids. They either choose another high school or go to LCC and never play at all. these kids r so far behind everyone else they have no chance.I know that with consolidation there comes problems. But the benefits outweighs everything.I saw firsthand what the football did in middle school. I also understand that one team in basketball would prob. not work. But I think every kid should have a fair shake that wants one.Someone actually needs to take some interest in these kids There are some good athletes that go somewhere else in the county besides the 3 top schools. Consolidation is the best answer in my opinion. It will not help my child but it will be in the best interest of letcher county to do so.

Well put CougarMom54,

I think I know you and your child and the consolidation did help him greatly in football. Sounds like your going to have another long year over the mountain this season in basketball. I didn't think your son was going to play, thought he was going to hit the weights for football????
#17
Lambert,

My son plays basketball to keep the weight off. He says he will be in the weight room right after christmas break. His sport is football. He played this year so they could make a team, he didn't want to let these kids down over here.

Lambert,
What is the word on AAU this summer? Who is standing out the most that next year will help high school out the most. With most of the starters seniors, I was just wondering what freshman next year will help the cougars compete that is a 8th grader right now?
#19
There is a sleeper in the county that's not been mentioned.
#20
allgame,
Who is the sleeper? Are you talking about a player or a team? I don't see another team in Letcher County that can play with MJP, Whitesburg or Cowan. As far as good players goes you have Chris Tyree and Gregory from Whitesburg, Baker, Niece from Cowan and Brock, Hall, Boggs from MJP, don't know about the rest of the county right now. Should be another good Freshmen team next year for the high school though, these kids got close during football season and I think they will gel pretty well next year.

How is whitesburg doing this year?
#22
Fan #1,
They are doing fine, I personally do not think that the coach is playing enough games. Don't know the reason, he has pretty good team and could be winning some games but to this point I think he has only played 9 or 10 games. This could come back to bite him because our two other strong teams in the county are Cowan and MJP and they have both played at least 20 games this season. Big upset last night, Cowan beat MJP in a big rivalry game. Look out Whitesburg, now there are two teams that could upset you in the tourny. At this point I don't think it would be considered an upset at all because of the prep of the other two teams, a three horse race for sure.
