I was wondering how much of an upset this one was.

I will get to see Newport on Saturday.

I good game to measure was each teams game with Highlands. NCC beat Highlands by 6. Newport lost to HHS by 18. Highlands is one of NKY's bet teams.

Where will Newport be Saturday?

Cody Collins had one thought in his mind as he grabbed the basketball out of the air. He knew the final seconds of the game clock were ticking off at Newport Central Catholic.

"Put it up," said Collins.

The Newport junior did just that from 21 feet away, and his 3-point shot with less than one second to play banked in for the winning points as the Wildcats beat rival NewCath 60-59 Thursday night.

NewCath (6-6) is ranked No. 9 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll.

They will be at Russell Saturday. It is a make up game from a game that was cancelled due to bad weather in the first week of the season.

I know Russell has struggled a little this year, but I think this should be a pretty good match-up. I believe Russell lost a close game to Brossart a few weeks ago??? Newport is not as good as Brossart this year. But they will be very athletic.

McDaniel is a pretty solid player. Good size (6-4 or so), average probably close to 20 per. It's their center Darnel (Darnal??? sic), that can be a force. He's not consistent, but he can drop 25 and haul down 15 on one night, and disappear due to foul trouble the next.

Good luck and enjoy the game.

Well if they have that kind of size and athleticism they should handle Russell. Russell is very young, they are rebuilding in a major way. Russell can hang in with teams if they are shooting well but if not, Newport will win rather easily.

A little more info I was able to get for you.

They avery 67 per game, but they don't shoot FT's real well 64%. They like an uptempo game so if you run, you play into their hands. When the played Holmes, who is one of the best uptempo teams in the state, they purposely slowed the game down to take Newport strength away. If they think they can press you, they will. They are very athletic and their press can create turnovers and easy buckets.

McDaniel 6-5 Jr - 14.3 ppg
Darnell 6-5 Sr - 13.2 ppg
Luther 6-2 Jr - 9.5 ppg
Tucker 6-1 Jr - 7.9 ppg
Sizemore 5-8 Jr - 3.2 ppg

That doesn't bode well for the home team Saturday.

Russell's probable starters are
Kyle Skaggs 5'10" 8th grade
Kasey Stapleton 5'10" Jr
Tanner Alexander 6'1" Jr
PJ Goble 5'11" Jr
Scott Ross 5'9" Jr

Others
Nathan Taylor 5'10 Jr
Brandon Boyd 6'1" So
Andrew Hogg 5'10" Sr
Justin Davidson 6'3" Fr
Kirby Whitaker 6'1" Jr
Grant Mckenzie 5'10 So
Austin Hunt 5'9" 8th grade

You can see how young they are. Coach Kidwell is doing a good job with them but is still trying to find the best line up.

I had heard that Newport was athletic but it surprised me that they beat NCC.

It surprised everyone in NKY as well.

Is that right, only one Sr. on the team? Did they lose a lot to graduation? Russell had a very solid football team, do a lot of football players not come out for Bball?

There may be one or two other seniors but none that contribute alot. Coach Kidwell is rebuilding from the ground up. Also trying to rebuild some bridges that were burned. Nobody expected alot of wins this year but most seem to happy with the direction the program is heading. In a couple of years Russell should return to be one of the traditionally good programs in the 16th region. Too many good athletes not to.
