JR is a great coach but unless he gets it under control he will be in the same position that Stiltner was.
I don't think you need to worry about J.R. or his coaching ability. He knows the game very well (both as a player and coach). He has really helped improve the Phelps program, whether you are a fan or not. He has his team under control. There is only so much a coach can do- he can't play the game for them.
And as far as everyone getting on here and bashing the new players... Let's remind ourselves that these are CHILDREN that we are talking about- who get on hear and read blogs written by adults. Maybe you should remember that. I say keep the thread positive and don't bad mouth innocent children.

Well you know I do worry about JR because he is a great guy and a great coach and I want to see him succesed (which he already has). If you dont like my posts then you are not obligated to read them. You act as if i do not know the abilites as a coach that Mr. Vahoose posses but i do. I watched him play through high school, followed his success through college and as much as I could during his time in the proffesionals.
Let's also remind ourselves that on this thread no one has bashed either girl they have just stated concerns. They are two very talented players however at times during their carriers the little bit of attitude has affected their success. I believe that each of these girls posses an ability that we have not seen at the guard position since the likes of Haley Ratliff and Mary Beth (Belfry). I hope to see each of them succed for I know they have the ability to do great things for the Lady Hornets. I am a fan of every player in the 15th region. However, sometimes critisim is needed to open their eyes. Such as a former Pike Central player who I once critiqued their game on this site, yes they got upset and mad. But what I said was took to heart and it benefited her. I am not trying to bash any player or any team. Just hope that maybe they realize their mistakes in the past take them to heart to posses greater things to help them through their lifes.
Now for my prediction
Phelps is always a tough place to come out with a win. Pike Central will have to utilize their inside game and protect the ball limiting turnovers. Coach Fields prides his coaching philosophies on hard nosed defense so in return Phelps must protect the ball and establish a solid half court game. Pike Central will look to get out on the break to get some quick and easy transition points. I think Pike Central has the edge at the post positions however Phelps clearly has the better Shooting guard. Depth goes to Pike Central. Overall I give each team a B+ on ability with two contrasting styles of play. With the home court advantage ill take Phelps by 8 in a had faught game. Good Luck to each team. I hope to see my Alma Mater and Coach Fields to prevail.
I would also like to say congrats to coach Fields as I was told a couple of days ago that he is going to be a father!!

I like your last post 15thRegionSlamaBamma. You were completely right about everything. At this moment people are doubting JR VanHoose and his team so I guess other people just took it the wrong way.
As for the two girls, they have been bashed and bashed and did I mention based? It's been going on forever. Every high school kid messes up, makes mistakes but its forgetting about them and learning moving on and becoming a better person. It seems as for these girls people don't want to let it go. I'm guessing now they think it may take them out of their game or something but it seems to me they just prove everyone wrong and wrong again by bringing a great game to the floor and they chemistry they have still stands strong. I really feel sorry for them because it seems as if everyone in the 15th region just waits for one wrong move to start in on them again. I wish them the best of luck!
As for the game,
I don't think either team is better than the other. I believe it will come down to free throws and who wants it more. I can't wait for this game, two great teams in the 15th from the same district there's no better place to be on Friday night! I wish both teams the best of luck, but I would love to see JR and his girls' pull this one out.

Same argument could be made about Phelps after the LCC disaster. Not trying to sound mean but its the truth. Its going to be a great game just as it has for the past few years. Sometimes I just wish that people would make an educated and unbiased comment/prediction. Such as Jay saying Central by 20+ like i mean seriously do you actually believe that. Pike Central played terrible against Magoffin but yet some fans think we will waltz in to PHELPS let me reiterate that PHELPS and beat the socks off of them with arguably one of the best coaches in the region. Not to mention our girls are still attempting to adjust to Gary's coaching and trying to feel one another out in the new system. An educated guess would predit either team in a close one. Really with all biased fews aside i really think if anyone wins by 15 or more it will be Phelps. I know that just made some Central fans bitter but really lets look at it wisely.

the refs over at phelp is going to hand them at least 20 points with bad calls. that is always how it is over there and that will never change. the good thing is pc is 20+ points better than phelps so it wont be a problem. pc plays team ball and i think this will take them a long ways in the tournament this year and maybe a trip back to the state tournament.

WELL SAID AND VERY TRUE,AND KINGJAMES 23 ,BEFORE YOU TALK ABOUT OFFICIATING I'D LOOK AT HOW THE GAME WAS CALLED LAST YEAR @PC,THAT WAS THE WORST CALLED GAME I'VE SEEN IN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS,AND I'VE WATCHED THEM FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS,LIKE I SAID IN ANOTHER POST,EVERY TIME PHELPS WINS IT'S BAD OFFICIATING . FACE IT , EVEN THOUGH PHELPS IS A VERY SMALL SCHOOL,THEY ARE CAPABLE OF BEATING THE BIGGER COMBINED SCHOOLS . SO QUIT YOUR WHINING AND GET USED TO IT.

Hornet Power even though I am taking both sides on this whole subject I do believe that Phelps probley has one of the biggest home court advantages. I have played there numerous times won my large and small margains but it seems as if you arent wearing a white uniform there then you better be ready for a one sided called game. Now I understand it happenes every where you go and yes PC has been a bad place the past couple of year. Notice I said past COUPLE. I do not think it will be that bad this season however. Lets just all drop the blame game and such and just root on our beloved schools as fans that is what we are here to do. Lets show our support and if your team loses then we can play the blame game haha just playing. But really it does happen everywhere and that is why we call it HOME COURT ADVANTAGE. We must give Phelps alot of credit for where they have came from PC fans. It was just 3 years ago when we beat them by an avg of 20 + points a game. Then the next season they turned around and beat us once and then we beat them by 15. Then there was last year when they gave us the scare of our lives. It is amazing how far they have came is such little time

From what I know JR is a good guy. Unless I have been told wrong, over Thanksgiving break, he had four starters (or 3 and a sub) leave on Thanksgiving day to New York and didn't return until Tuesday. Now either the team didn't practice at all or those four girls missed practice. In either case, they all played on Thursday at LCC. No punishment? After the LCC game, there was another trip to Gatlinburg. Practice on Friday? Any punishment?
There just seems to be no committment. I've also heard that JR is playing with that semi-pro team. Any time given to that team will take away from coaching. I expect Phelps to be out of shape and lose the game. JR may be a good coach. Thus far, he has been coaching what Coach Campbell started along with the transfers. I am anxious to see how good of a coach he is next year. By next year, he will have had over two full years to be building a program. Let's see then!

Guys look, lets set the record straight here. Yes, I had some girls go to New York, they left Thanksgiving Day and got back Tuesday evening. They missed two practices. Will they be punished, yes, did it hurt us last week, probably, but I will never harshly punish a kid(s) that have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go to New York and see another part of the country. Don't worry they have made up what they missed. The Gatlinburg trip was a school trip to compete in a national competition, only one varsity girl went and we didn't have practice on Friday because of my sickness and my wife's surgery the day of the LCC game. Once again I will n
Yes, I am playing with a professional team, but I don't have to go to any practices because I have been playing with the same guys for three years and we run the same stuff. The team owner knows that I coach and I will not miss any game/practice time with my team for the professional team. What does what I do on my personal time have to do what you guys think about me anyway. I guess you all should punish me because I like to read for hours at a time or do my family genealogy as well.
As far as someone bringing up how long I practice, we go for anywhere between 1:20-1:40 minutes a day, enought time for me to get done what I need to with the girls. That time frame is just part of my coaching philosophy at this point in time and how I believe I should do things.
Yes, I do have assistants, one is my wife, the other also coaches the cheer and dance teams at Phelps. We had to cancel practice and the game on Monday because my wife had surgery (if anyone needs to know why for clarification - I will explain in a minute) and my other assistant was gone to the dance competition in Gatlinburg. Once again I apologize to all who I offended by not being able to practice.
Finally, lets remeber that this is just a game, in the overall scheme of things, we should not be talking about kids and coaches like some of us have been. Granted you have your opinion and you should be able to speak it, but try to do it in a positive manner. Some of you have kids, just remember what it would feel like if they were being talked about on here as some statements in threads on this website. As for me, I really don't care what people have to say about me. I know what I do for my girls and how I treat them. The thing that really bothers me is that my wife and I are going through a tough time in our lives right now and seeing things that are untrue or "half-truths" on here bug me a little. My wife and i have wanted to have kids for a while and we were recently told our only option is In-Vitro Fertilization, which we are currently in the process of trying. As far as trying to come up with money to afford this and then seeing my wife struggle with taking shots, other medications, and painful surgeries to prepare for it, we have been a little stressed. Now I don't explain the "fools" on here to understand where I am coming from, but some of you others I hope would be kind enough to take it easy on these girls and their coach for a while and try to understand that life should be enjoyable and this game that these girls play is just a game. It is not life and death. I am reminded everyday how precious life and having a child is and I will never take that for granted or talk about someone who I have no idea what they are going through or what their life is like. Remember, everyone is different, they do things different, just because we don't like it, why should we think that is the wrong way to do things. What amazes me is that all of this is over a game, remember life is full of twists and turns. We should all just try to make the best of it and enjoy it!!

We should all just try to make the best of it and enjoy it!!
this is great man.. keep your head up its all going to be worth it
