IDK why they scheduled Middlesboro or Sheldon Clark. They need to keep teams like Station (if Station agrees) and add teams like Lex Cath, Cov Cath. The tougher competition in the regular season only makes ya better in the post season.

From what I am hearing no one will shedule us, games have been hard to get for a couple of years. Matney says he will play anyone anytime on a home away contract. Middleborough is part a of a WYMT bowl and Sheldon Clark wanted to play us because of travel costs. Love to see up play one of the top teams in 5A or 6A every year.

Unless you end up demoralized, or with tons of injuries (like the Wheelersburg game two years ago they never really recovered from).
Playing a tough game or two is nice, but football, especially on the high school level, is a game of confidence, and you need a couple of teams you can annihilate as well to build that confidence. A few blowout losses can be enough to make most high school teams hang up their cleats before the season's actually over (prime example, this year's Covington Catholic).

I heard that rumor that JC was going to play Pikeville next year. Can anyone prove or disprove the rumor?

Matney will not play anyone, anytime. He plays anyone when he is loaded. Then drops the competition when not so much. Bell has left many messages and called several times, he has not returned the call. Going to play Middlesboro?? Why not Bell?

I do not know if you are a Bell fan but from what I hear this is not the case. We scrimmaged Bell the last two year and pretty well domnated but that is for another post and time. matney has said he has tried to schedule them many times. I have been told that Bell will not play us or any other top team, do not want to start trouble but it is what I hear and I could have heard wrong. JC will not be down this next year and I know the fans would love to see the game. The last I heard we are looking for games, but they must be a home and away contract.
The Middlesborogh game is a WYMT bowl thing they just picked up. Have WYMT change Middlesborough for Bell. Then have Bell schedule Belfry and we will see who is the best in the mountains.

You don't have to trust me, just ask Matney. Bell has called..if he says not Bell has many open dates have him call. I looked at something in the coaches office called a list server. Bell has tried to contact them several times. The AD has said that he will have him call but no calls. The AD will not schedule the game without Matney.
By the way you have heard wrong.

I'm on list serve also, and I know all too well about who has been trying to schedule with who and what's going on as far as clinics, scrimmages, games, etc. I know that you guys are trying to schedule with Corbin in some kind of bowl, that's great....Corbin is a good team, but still yet I haven't seen anything on list serve from Dudley about scheduling JC unless I completely missed it and I check it regularly. I hope a game does happen instead of the scrimmage though...it would benefit both programs in their programs. Now back on topic to JC '09

On Matneys's last talk show he said they are looking at some new defensive formations for teams in the gun. We all know JC will run the bone, but does anyone see some new formations or looks for the group he will have next year? We have lost some outstanidng players and have some holes to fill, but I think this group could be as good as any we have had.

Injuries are part of the game, they can happen against anybody no matter what class they are in or how good they are. I think it was evident against Highlands that this bunch never give up. They have too much heart and pride, plus they have a coach that won't let em.
Take a look at Louisville Central last year.

Monster Man you need to open your eyes and realize that there are other teams in Ky. You are so close minded with this Eagle stuff that you just sit around and wait for someone to say the least little thing about your Eagles. This years team is the best team JC will see for many many years. I was told that their middle school program got kicked around a little bit this season and with the microscope that Matney is under the only talent that the mighty Eagles will be getting is within the county of Johnson. No more picking another counties best athlete and promising him the moon, those day's are over my friend and you are about to see what Matney can do with homegrown talent and homegrown talent only!!!!!!!

I agree with you. Highlands had faced some very good teams and is showed later in the game. I think Breathitt's game with JC help them with Belfry. You only get better by playing better competition. From what I hear it is difficult to schedule teams now. And too, there is not enough tough competitions in our area, and the teams that are seem to avoid us. I would love to see us schedule a good Northern KY team and a Louisville team every year, even if we lost, it would prepare us for a state run.
In our defense JC did play the Canadian champs, played the 5A champs very close, Played the possable 4A champs very close in a srcimmage, played a tough final four 3A team and beat the possable 3A and 1A champs. Add in the district games and the schedule was tough. But we need more compettive games.
12-10-2008, 09:14 PM
JC has 7 non-district games next year. Make a trip up to NKY and play a Highlands, Simon Kenton or Cov Cath. Go west and play a Lex Cath or Scott County. I keep hearin Matney will play anybody if they sign a home/away contract, heck with that. If they will only play ya once and at their place, go do it.

I am a JC fan and get the feeling you are not. History will judge JC in the future and I will not bet against Matney, and we have some great kids coming back so time will tell. As far as the transfers, I personally got to know all the parents of the transfers and although football was part of the decision, they came to get a better education for thier kids than where they were at. I do not think JC was the first school distircit in our area to have a kid transfer who was good and ended up playing a sport. If I am wrong, please correct me.
This thread is about the upcoming year and sucess does bring in a full compliment of opinions and your opinion is needed. Getting different opinions helps all parties evaluate thier programs. You could be right, but personally I will not bet on it. By some chance, would you identify the program you support?

I support everyone, I just don't appreciate seing a coach take another counties best athletes and putting them on display in another county. I may be a little ol' school, but that's how I feel about it!!!

I supprt everyone too. I did not catch which program had lost a kid to JC you were refering too? Has this program ever had a kid transfer in to play a sport?
What if a family thought thier kid could better himself and attened a school they thought was better, would you be aganst this.
Redneck back to the thread, I would love to see us play the teams like you said! Great for the program and would generate alot of money to help the program. I agree playing only once would be ok if you could get a big name.

WRONG
Johnson Central's 8th grade team made a very good showing in a very strong conference. As for their 7th grade team, how can you say they got kicked around when they were undefeated conference champions, having beat every 7th grade team that they played. In conference they beat Belfry three times, Letcher Central twice and Breathitt County in addition to others. They also played some 8th grade teams with very good results. Just wanted to set the facts straight, as so many like to get on here and spout statements as fact that have no basis. If this is being kicked, keep on kicking.

I'll bet Sheldon Clark never had the first transfer for all those years either.

I agree with many that this could be a very explosive and fast team. But I dont think this group or personell can overpower and run though teams like this 08' team did. Matney is a great coach, dont get me wrong, but he needs to open up the offensive playbook. I still expect another big year out of JC and another District Title.

If I recall Matney had one team at SCHS, the caliber of the Eagles the last 3 or 4 years. Heck P-Burg beat them on a regular basis when he was at SCHS. Far cry from a powerhouse Mr.Kimball. His best years are behind him, Ashland will rebuild and they had their only chance to beat Highlands and didn't make it happen. Oh yes Matney played the same Highlands when he was a "powerhouse" in Martin CO. with the same results. Once recruits graduate you will see the true coaching skills of Mr. Matney, until then his skills are on hold for me!!!!!!! Heck with the talent he had this year I feel like any coach in the mtns. could have gone as far as they did, JMO!!!!!!!!

As I have said earlier this is an open posts and your opinion is needed. In all fariness I do not think the JC fans or Matney will loose much sleep over it. The JC program has reached a level that we can reload with new talent and just keep on winning, the true test of a great program. Every year I do go through some thought about how we will top the last year. I have done this through Ron Blume and Sean Music, to Cody Conley, Tommy Taylor, Blake Johson and Micheal Tackett, to Shawn Grimm, Nathiel Dials, and JK Ratliff to Ian Welch and Chase Richardson and many more great players. Kind of see a trend here? I thought this last year would be a rebuilding year. I think the program is to this point.
If would love to know where you are from to have developed this great love for JC and Matney.

Having a blowout game does nothing for you except allow under classmen get playing time. You need to play a tough schedule to get better. As for Cov Cath, they did not hang up their cleats(Played hard in the playoffs), they were just a below average team with very little talent. I do not see Cov Cath staying down for long. As for JC, I am not sure how long they can stay at the level they are playing at now(only time will tell).

Matney had a bunch of good teams in Martin Co for a bunch of years. That's why he was a hot I dont know where you are coming up with that stuff.
Hotweels, it's time to let some of this stuff go, and just move on. I'm beginning to think you are going to take some of this stuff to the grave with you. Dont you think it's time to just let it go? Is it worth it to drive yourself to the insane asylum over? Me and you have always got along, so why all of this stuff now all of a sudden? Since you now wear a different color uniform than the black and gold that you yourself used to wear, let me ask you this. If Central is going to be such a pud from now on, then why did your new adopted team decide to throw up the white flag and concede that they cant compete with them any longer? Best I recall, in '06 your new favorite team went to the regional finals with about a third of their starting lineup being JCHS boys. How come you didn't bring any of that up? Hey perhaps we can get a Little Mud Lick old timers team up to whomp up all over em. It'd be a piece of cake. You can be quarterback, how's that?
I think everybody saw enough of Matney's coaching skills in his first year turn around to answer any questions about his abilities. He had no transfers then did he? In '06, all he had was Dials, when he actually had a better team than what he had this year. Is that not correct?
Best I recall, PBurg had some powerhouse teams as well over the last several years. That's like shaming Florida by getting beat by someone like Alabama or Ohio Stae, or vise versa. That makes no sense.
Uhhh , I believe that everybody else that Highlands has played for several years now has ended up with the exact same results too, haven't they? 17 state championships, going on #18 there my friend. Being #2 sure aint nothing to be ashamed of. Also the powerhouse team he had that faced Lorenzon and Smith was ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the country too, weren't they? Try telling all of the story.
Take care.

Hmm, wonder why Florida (Best team in the country) scheduled that heavyweight Citadel this year. Must also be why Alabama (former #1 in the country) scheduled Tulsa, Western Kentucky, and Arkansas State this year. Reckon both teams scheduled all those teams to get better?
I assume you were not at the CovCath/JC game? CovCath tucked their tails between their legs early in that game. They may be down, but the truth is, they just plain quit.
The thing is, you dont have the first clue about Johnson Central or it's program to begin with, to assume anything about the future either way.
