As a lot of us have read and commented on, Belfry has had an issue the last two games with artificial noise makers, horns, etc. being used during the game. I'm sure it happens at other places too and I'd like to know what really is and isn't allowed.
During the Belfry/Breathitt County game on Friday, the PA announcer announced (presumably directed by the officials) that the KHSAA forbids it. Then they announced that horns could not be used anymore during the game. This came after Belfry repeatedly blew a very loud horn during game play.
Can anyone post the KHSAA rule so we can see what the KHSAA rule actually does state? Does the rule apply to fans using handheld noise makers, or just "official" school horns? What about whistles? I'm sure they can't be used for obvious reasons.
Feel free to comment on your thoughts about the use of such devices. Does this happen at other places too? Are you aware of any other game where the referees put a stop to it?
Thanks for your help, BGR posters. I put this in its own thread because discussion of it apparently brought the game thread to a close because it was off topic.

I dont know what belfry had friday night, it sounder like an 18 wheeler horn going off. The thing is they let it off right before we snapped the ball on offense, which i thought was a little pathetic on there part. At Breathitt we do have a cannon we let off, but the only time is for celebration after a td, xp, or 2 point conversion is made. We dont intentailly let them off in the middle of a game like some schools do.

a double barrel at that lol
I seriously thought it was coming FROM the PA... It was that loud. And I'm from Belfry
And by "from Belfry", I live one mile "up the holler" across the road from the school
Regardless of legality or not, it was incredibly distasteful and rude. I would hope that at least that in the future they'll have the restraint to reserve it for between quarters and after the game.

The person who brought that horn was NOT the one blowing it. It was a mixture of several different people. If the horn is blown in the correct manner it is no different than the cannon at Breathitt OR Johnson Central being blown. IMHO, it adds to the hype of the game and should be allowed to be there as long as it is done correctly. If your gonna ban one thing... than ban them all.... get rid of the Cannon's, hand held air-horns (2 or more are rather loud as well), and shakers and bells..... Do it across the board.... PERIOD!

After playing Johnson Central, I asked my son if the constant music bothered him. It seemed they played it alot during huddles and lining up , but not at the snap. However I still felt it was alot and loud and at times annoying. His answer was that he didn't even hear it.
I have been to games where a fan would at an opportune time blow a whistle which sounded just like a refs whistle. I can understand how this would definately be distracting in a game because that is what the players are tuning into. However, fan noise really shouldn't get to them because they are so focused on the game.

Yes you are right, if it is blown at the right time then there is no problem. But the simple fact is it was blowed right in the middle of the game, right before Breathitt snapped the ball.

And another thing, who ever brings the horn needs to do the right thing and not let abunch of hoodlems blow the horn. At Breathitt one person is in charge of the cannon and incidents like this do not occur.

I think the biggest issue this past friday night against Breathitt was that Breathitt is a no huddle offense and a select few from Belfry were blowin the horn(s) while Breathitt's QB was tryin to give his players the play call and the snap cadence.

Russell has a set of air horns on top of the scoreboard along side the flaming Devil. There has never been any issue with it to my knowledge.
John and Jodi Norman also sell horns that many have for the games. My wife always has her cowbells (except for when jgrubby breaks them). As long as they are not used during plays then I don't see a problem.

Yes as long as they are used correctly, I have no problem with it. Its just that some places dont abide by these standards.

As i stated above i have no problem if it is going to be used correctly. Just find someone who is responsible enough to bow the horn at the correct times, not in the middle of the game.

Sounding something as loud as a locomotive horn or a cannon or a siren is fine. As long as it is only done when play on the field has stopped. Sounding something like that during play or before a snap is wrong. I believe it is even against the rules and can result as a penalty.

Yes it is wrong if done in those situations, but belfry has found a way around that rule, because they did that and no action was taken against them.

If it is disruptive to the game they should but most are still aprehensive to call a penalty on a team because of the fans.

They were asked to stop blowing it and they abided and obliged.... end of story!!....LOL....
A penalty would have been called if it were to be excessive but it wasn't blown any more in the game for it to have been excessive....

I'm not getting into that argument. I just gave the hypothetical situation. I'm staying out of it.

Well in future games im sure the other teams would appreciate it if the horn was not blown at all during game play. If a td,xp, ot 2 point conversion happens no problem, but in play please dont blow the horn.
