No More Apple Bowl?
#1
Just wondering if this is true? I heard there was no new contract signed?

There is no more Apple Bowl...for now anyway. The Paintsville officials have informed those at JC that they would not renew the contract for the game.
#4
Sad to see this one end. It kind of makes you feel like when Belfry and Prestonsburg stopped playing each other after the realingment. Two great rivalries are no more.
#5
I think several at Paintsville became upset this year when Trimble wouldn't agree to play Paintsville's elementary teams boys/girls which to me makes no sense at all. I think when this older admin. retires from J.C. things will start to get better between the two schools. I really think Steve Trimble's hate for Paintsville is the biggest problem between the two schools at this point!!!!!!!!!!

I have played in the last 4 apple bowls, this last one being my Sr. year. I wish they would still play it because its fun! Even though we get our butt's kicked its fun lol. I have really good freinds from JCHS that i have won 2 State baseball championships with and also played with in nationals. This game should continue for money at least. Paintsville is a poor school and we need this game for money at least. Even though it herts to lose i still went to the after game party with some JC friends to talk about the game and the funny **** that happed. But im never playing football again anyway so im glad i played in the last one! But for real I think we should at least play teams in the same night to bring a crowd or something it just takes the fun out of apple day. But really the kids have no say so... at least i dont or my friends for PHS or JCHS do.

ITS THE PARENTS THAT MAKE THIS WHOLE RIVALRY SO **** CRAZY!!!!!!!! Smile

That's a great reason to not play the Apple Bowl.Smile

I cant remember the county and the city playing each others elementary programs for probably better than 10-12 years now. All of a sudden that is this huge issue??

Can it be possible for there there to be a more intense hatred from a human being than what BMR has openly stated for the county system??

I think not playing the Apple Bowl is a ridiculous decision! I mean the series has gone on for over 30 years. It is a tradition. It really makes no difference who wins. Whether Paintsville ever has another team that can beat JC I don't know, but I do know that JC isn't going to have a great team every year from now on either. But it isn't about that anyway. It is about Apple Day, the fun the two schools have between each other, the fun the kids have that play and don't play football for both schools, the crazy adults from both schools and so forth. It is a tradition and last but not least a MONEY GAME for both schools. Probably more so for Paintsville, but still its a big gate for both schools.

On a side note: I think the Administrations at both Paintsville and JC need to put aside the personal feelings each may have toward the other and let the kids play ball. This ridiculous stuff about JC not playing Paintsville in elementary, Paintsville not wanting to play JC in football or tennis? Paintsville and JC play each other in high school basketball and baseball because they have to or they would probably stop those series too. That is what I mean by ridiculous. And it comes from both sides!!

I say sign the contract and play the Apple Bowl and play each other in all other sports!!!

The girls did play each other. As far as the boys, Johnson Co. joined the Mountain Middle Conference and I think Paintsville dropped out.

I'm sure Steve Trimble has no hate whatsoever for Paintsville High School! That wasn't a very good statement to make!

This is an event we all knew was going to happen. It is a sad thing and will be missed. There is no good reason for stopping the series at this point. This game was always one of the biggest draws ($$$$) in Eastern Kentucky. It was always fun to watch. It got the students from both schools excited and served as a tool to get them involved. It was the only High School football game that many in Johnson County ever went to. On Thursday night before Apple Day you went to the Apple Bowl. That is just the way it was, and the way it should be. Now, for whatever reason (I have my suspicions),it appears to be over. For 34 years it was the right thing to do, now all of a sudden it is not. Having played in the game four times (0-4) and been involved on some level for several years, I am convinced, regardless of the outcome, this game was and still could be good for the game of football in Johnson County and in Paintsville. I have seen the highs and lows of rivalry displayed both in the schools and in the community that first week in October. The good far outweigh the bad.

Doesn't Bell County have a tractor bowl?

This really upsets me. Having played in the Apple Bowl I think this is really a bad decision to do away with this series. This is one of the biggest games in the state of KY each and every year. Yes, Johnson Central is a power house football school in the state of KY and Paintsville is having a tough time competing with them. However, I do remember the days when Paintsville was a powerhouse football school in 1A and used to thump JC each and every year. I think this is a gutless move on behalf of the Paintsville School system and it hurts to say that having graduated from there. Paintsville is just backing out of this series in order to maintain the overall series lead that they currently have. My thoughts on that are simply what's any record, title, etc worth if you aren't willing to put it on the line against someone? I think that's the easy way out and it is a slap in the face to the people who have played in this tradition rich series in years past.

I agree 100%,,,ley these kids play ball

Very classy move on Paintsville's part! I wonder who the real brain child was behind this decision to end a 34 year old tradition?? Paintsville football just took a big step backward IMO. No guts, no glory!

Probably more to it than that, but if that is the case, then it is bittersweet for the Tigers because they will forever keep the Apple Barrel!!

Congrats JC, the Tigers have surrendered!!

Can none of you see the obvious here? Seriously, JCHS played Fort Thomas Highlands in a close game through the third quarter, you take away one play and JCHS could possibly be playing next week. At the same time JCHS beat Hazard 56-14 and Hazard is playing in the class "A" finals. Shouldn't JCHS be wanting to improve their strength of schedule and not play class "A" schools since even the best aren't very much competition for the bigger schools and instead play 4, 5 and 6A schools? It seems as if JCHS' season is centered around the Apple Bowl, or at least seemed so to me after reading the paper? Be proud of what you accomplished this season. I do think that the elementary teams not playing is a major factor in this decision, why won't the county schools play Paintsville in elementary sports when the schools are of comparable size? Yet everyone says size is not important at the high school level? I also think the youtube incident was a major factor, the skit was absolutely ridiculous and very offensive to PHS students. Yeah I am not blind and I know that our kids are not completely innocent, but our administration has NEVER allowed students from an opposing school to be put down in a pep rally, our pep rallys consist of our kids talking about our kids and our team. Kids will be kids, but highly qualified educators should be just that and use better judgement here. I agree sad to see this game go, but I think this decision benefits both schools. That is just my opinion.
#20
Come on? These kids look forward to these types of games. You take the hometown game away from the players, fans... what do you have... just another game. From they way i have seen our kids interact with supporting each other in other sports, if you take a good game rivalery away?? What is that telling our kids? Hey if you can't beat the other team...then don't play them? Get real coaches and parents, let your kids learn, play the best you can and move forward. Don't run and hide.

Why won't Paintsville Middle School play Johnson County Middle School. Seems they have a record of scheduling us and then after evaluating our team, decide to cancel. I know that happened this year. And please do not bring size into this situation. The schedule had our 7th grade team playing your 7th and 8th grade combined team. Is this a factor in us wanting to cancel the Apple Bowl. No, and neither should the elementary situation.

Sad Day in Johnson County.
#24
You know what? I am ALL for the Apple Bowl.

BUT, what strikes me as being so funny. Is that, I recall on another thread so many people complaining about it not being a game any more and that JC shouldn't play Paintsville any more. Everyone was saying split the barrell and both teams play someone else.
Well, now that Paintsville has decided not to play JC. Everyone has changed their minds. And now Paintsville are the bad guys. Man, I have never seen so many hypocrites in my life.
#25
Now, speaking on the grade school situation. I know that they haven't played in a very long time. But, Paintsville didn't having any 5th or 6th grade teams for a while either. And I don't know if it has anything to do with what some are saying.

BUT, Why in the world they don't want to play the Paintsville Elementary teams is just beyond my understanding. Every school in JC could add 2 more games to their basketball schedule without traveling out of county. No one is saying to add them to the JCEAA Post Season Tourney.

I DON"T know everything that is going on and DON"T want to know. I just feel that we as adults need to be looking out for the kids and NOT our silly little wants or dislikes.

We all say that we want things to be different. So why don't we as adults step up and start the change. Instead of feeding our kids with all this crap and continuing the problem.

Nothing will change until the current administration retires. Trust me on this one, until Mr. Burchett takes over as super. this situation will remain the same. Once he takes over, I feel that alot of things will change.

You are so right. JC is knocking on the door and it hurt them in the playoff game when they did not go up against better competition earlier in the year. JC looked rattled late in the 3rd period. It is time for them to start playing top teams in 4,5,and 6A. Tougher schedule and open up the offense with some passing game, and the sky is the limit.

JC joining the Conference had nothing to do with Paintsville dropping out. That decision was made right after the final game last year for Paintsville. Looong before JC joined.

After that statement , why should your word be trusted for anything. You obviously dont have a clue to what you are talking about.

I bet he didn't even know he was wanting that position.Smile Smile Smile I know him pretty well.

I'll tell some of you guys one thing for sure. Steve Trimble has no hatred in his heart for anyone. He is just not made that way. Never seen a human able to turn the other cheek any more to his adversaries than what he has done during his tenure as super. Heck that was his family member that just passed away that led the Paintsville school sytem all of those years. You obviously dont know the man and know anything at all about what his personal convictions are.

I am reminded of a very noble thing that someone from PHS did after JC won the sectional baseball tournament in '07. They put congrats up on their marquee wishing good luck. That was a very classy thing for someone frm PHS to do. Smile BUT, guess who made someone go out in the middle of the night and take it down and then threaten to those responsible to never ever let something like that happen again? Come on you've got 3 guesses, although you will only need one. Also guess which self proclaimed "classy" member on here threw an absolute fit. You finger pointers never want to talk about stuff like that though , do you?
