If someone would have told me that this would be the final score of this game at 7:00 today, I'd have given them the number of a psychologist, because they would have had to be crazy.

Shocked, in a good way admittedly, but still...

Grats boys, 3 more to go!

Now that this seasonis over I can see the changes for next year.
RB- Jones
RB- Rice
FB- Korzep
QB- ?? Sparks??
I would fair to speak of a few Sophomores starting next year. This Freshman crew is huge and athletic. I would say that the nesxt 2 years will see the second round of playoffs just like this year and hopefully something will appear.

The Juniors this year will be leaders, no doubt.
The Sophomore class has some great kids.
The Freshman class is very talented.
The 8th grade is talented also with great numbers.
The 7th has talent and great numbers.
The 6th grade this year has around 30 kids and great athletes. (I am partial to this group). I know it is only 6th grade but they beat Belfry this year and held them to MINUS 30 yards total. They have the taste and desire to keep it that way.

I am sure that the seniors will never forgt this year, none of us ever do. BUT, life continues. Conrats BELFRY, just take it all the way.........

A question about the future: How will the closing of AK Steel affect teams in the Boyd/Greenup area?
#96
Nobody seems to want to talk about the play calling that was used for this game, oh wait a Minuit every game. This game was lost by play calling more so then the execution of the plays that every team we play new was coming. Clearly our strength was to run the Power I. We have a 6' 2" 250 pound full back in Storm but he never seen the ball. That kind of size as a fullback and if you are going to continue to run the same old plays that everybody knows is coming are more likely to work, but every time we turned around he was being yanked back out of the game. I believe we tried to throw the ball to Mike Dillion twice you got to be kidding me. A weapon like that and we throw to him twice. AJ Cordle would of been better off not to even throw the ball since he does not make any reads, just come up and throw to a spot and hope for the best. I agree with the comments before that this game was over before they got on the bus but not because of the kids mind set but because of the poor offense scheme (and poor use of talent) that was drawn up for this game 30 plus years ago.

Sorry guys I have to repply to my own comments it seems I did not finish them due to being sick from the lack of coaching that took place last night I mean did not take place. What I meant to say is We have a 6' 2" 250 pound fullback in Storm but he never seen the ball. That kind of size as a fullback and the abality to run the ball as Drew can will stand a better chance to work if you are going to continue to run the same old plays that everybody knows is coming. Storm should of been left in the game and have Drew run the ball out of the Power I right off of his hip. What do you know that should open a little thing we all know as play action pass, a new concept to this coaching staff but boy is it affective.

Total domination. Belfry just embarassed Russell. CONGRATS Pirates.
Agree with FBALL that you could see this coming from the Ashland game. As I said before some of these kids know the word quit.
#13 Abrams, #34 Rice (hold your heads up) looked to be the only ones that cared. Abrams got most of his yardage with very little blocking and was swarmed with Pirate jerseys after every tackle. And the same with Rice. With Russell lineman just looking and wondering how there player was in on every tackle. You could have the best back field in and with out blocking it won't work. Our defensiveline was get blown off the ball 3- 4 yrds and with our LB's blitzing they were stuck in and no way to read or get out.
Can anybody explain to me why the ends and corners are not taught to contain?????? This is basic football.
It appeared that Russell had more problems on the sidelines ????????
This should have been taken care of games if not years ago. The coaches need to take charge and have discipline with these kids. The arguing came to the front and was not addressed. If that means you bench the kid then so be it. If the parents want to coach and have hotdogs and candy. Then put the kid in the seat next to them. Coaches take charge.
The play calling was ???????????????????
You pounds Abrams for 55 yrds and gets you good field position and then you want to fake everybody out and try to pass. These kids know you should not pass. And what, you take the air plum out of your team. WHY WHY WHY.
As for next few years. Size may be a factor as it was this year ????
But speed with strengh kills. Next year starts in Jan. And every kid that wants to be a RED Devil should be in the weight room and also lift outside the weight room. They should hang this scoreboard over there doors to get the kids an attitude from day and to remember the embarassment.

why would you say that about your coaches, they beat us the last to times with the same plays, and got you a state championship just afew years back with the same plays, and even coach haywood runs the same plays...belfry just better this year..
mrfootball03 Wrote:what is so stunning?.. Russell. like I said in the prediction thread, just isn't that good this year.. Maybe some of the Russell fans convinced some of you all that the Red Devil are pretty spectacular.. But the truth is the truth.. A 7-5 Russell season, is a down Russell season.. they'll be back.. but this wasn't thier year.. I predicted 48-20. IMHO, I thought the Red Devils would punch a few in on our younger guys..
You didnt see the same Russell team that started the season! That have went down hill since the middle of Sept. They were much better earlier on and fell flat on their face! I think the coaches need a break! Congrats to BELFRY!!! WE in eastern KY usually stick together, Here is one that lives in Russell that will be cheering you all the way to a state championship!!
I agree with you that Belfry is the better team this year but I also believe due to the lack of coaching and game preperation these boys were not given a fair chance. I believe from what I read on these forems that to many people live in the past. I don,t care what these guys did 2, 3 4 or even 30 years ago that was then this is now and this team was out coached..... Look it is great to remember the past but ask the kids on this team if they were thinking about the past last night.
DevilsWin Wrote:How many games have you won as a head coach again?

100?
200?
300?

1 maybe?

Ivan knows who he's coached against better than you and if the man said its the best Belfry team he's coached against that's it, end of discussion.

This is a Great Belfry Team, and they have enough speed, experience and power to cruise past SC and Breathitt Co then get some revenge against Central in Louisville.

Good luck!

Neither you or Ivan McGlone can speak for me and I could care less what either of you think.

He's seen Belfry once a year for the past 5 years, and I've been to just about Belfry game since the late 80s.

It was a great compliment by McGlone to this Belfry team, but not the end all of the discussion.
FBALL Wrote:Its not the weight room that lost this game or any other for Russell this season.

Belfry was not bigger than Russell. They were not stronger. They were quicker and more disciplined. This game was won much more between the ears than it was on physical abilities.

I actually think Russell will be much better next season. They won't be as big but they won't be tiny either. I do expect them to be much more focussed and fundamentally sound.
It just depends on who coaches them! Mcglone needs to retire: He makes no adjustments during a game, if his bread and butter play doesnt work we lose!!! He will even say so on his radio comments!
EKUAlum05 Wrote:I know Belfry picked off Shelby Valley like 7 or 8 times one season.

Taking a wild shot in the dark I will say either Derick Pauley or Brad Hatfield.

Brad Hatfield against SV in the '96 season, Clifton Hatfield during the '03 season, or Matt Maynard in '05.

Agree, This year Russell was just not that good, period. Had the talent but some times you have a group of players that just will not jell and just will not give there heart to being a Red Devil. To much arguing amongst the players and some times the coaches have to much of it and they let the kids determine there out come. I've always said that discipline was what Russell has been missing for years. Ivan and coaching staff should have a meeting in Jan and take over this program. And if the kids embarass Russell in anyway on or off the field just hand over your jersey and see ya in 2010. It is all about discipline and this team did not have it. Some did most didn't.
Will always be a RED DEVIL fan but I do not wear maroon colored glasses and some times the pitch fork is turned.
FBALL Wrote:Rice should move to halfback next year. Jones, White and Stapleton should see time back there as well.

I think the quarterback position is going to be interesting.

Agree, should be Rice, Jones, Stapleton, White, Edwards, Korzep, Spradlin,
The JV Qb was Sparks but the FR QB #33 DeHoff could very well be the QB. He's a brute. If not QB then FB.
The line will be up for grabs. There should be no guaranteed, even if you started this year. Dont be surprised if you see some next year soph playing if not starting. They will hit you.
Great game by belfry the big red angry defense looked great. Congrats good luck the rest of the way.
I don't think there's a halfback that can beat us.
From what I saw, Russell ran Abrams on a sweep out of a wingback set 20 times.

well, here it goes, first and foremost, congratulations to belfry on the win and good luck through the rest of the playoffs. now on to russell, as far as the complaining about the coaching goes, those same plays your griping about have won us championships and various other acheivements over the past 30 years! its worked in the past and will work in the future. just because we have a terrible year doesnt give you the right to through Ivan and crew under the bus! as for the players, that was the absolute worst effort i have ever seen from a russell team. nobody blocking, nobody tackling, nobody hustling, thats the reason russell lost last night! no other reason. well, i guess i shouldnt say nobody, there was 1 player out of the 11 on the field that wanted to play, abrams coming of the CAM with 70 yards with the lack of blocking he had was an accomplishment in itself!!!!

I agree with all of this too.
Honestly I cannot say I'm surprised with the result of the game. Shure we all wanted to be positive and take the high road and rout for our Red Devils. The writing was on the wall all year. Lack of leadership on and off the field. I would have to say that Russell did the best they could without the on field leadership. I have to also wonder why Storm did not carry the ball at all.

They will be up and running in the middle of January.

I dont think anyone is suggesting to throw anyone under a bus!! [COLOR="Red"]BUT : anyone who knows anything about football and has followed this team knows they have under achieved this year! And it is the coaches responsibility to coach these young men and give them a chance to succeed! This staff clearly dropped the ball this season, they started going down hill and Ivan made no adjustments! The season speaks for itself!
You coach a power game when you have the players to do that
.
Carefull of what you wish for when Ivan decides to retire the program will take a step back. It will be hard to find someone to replace him.

I don't think it would matter what adjustments anyone made would have helped last night. Belfry was rollin.

Got to give Ivan Lee his due what a beast.
