1. Doug Howard- Belfry
2. Michael West- Lawrence County
3. Jarrod Lawson- Corbin

5. Shawn Robbins- Bell County
6. Matt Slone- Pburg
7. Shawn Grim- Johnson Central
8. Adam Dials- Sheldon Clark
9. Dustin May- Belfry
10. Barrett Rogers- Pikeville
Doug Howard: 2 State Titles, Close to 5000 career rushing yards, Over 70 TD's in his career, and without a doubt the single most devastating stiff arm highlight to ever appear on WYMT's Sports Overtime.
(I do not consider Ashland and Russell the mountains or else Arliss Beach, Josh Gross, and Kasey Clark would all make the list)

 Those 3 were the ones that came to my head first. Robbins and Reagan were excellent backs in the 2000s!

Dusty Miller from Rockcastle was pretty solid too

Dusty was a good running back only down fall was he tended to shy away from contact but was deff a really good back.
By far the best imo was Dough Howard....absolute beast!

Although I am bias Robbins was the best. Broke more tackles than most big backs but had 4.4 speed to break the big one. Ask Mueller at Highlands who is the best HS back he has seen. Shawn had more yards at Halftime against them than they had given up the entire season, in 13 games.
Howard was a bruising back at Belfy.
Beach was a very good back at Ashland.
Reagan did everything at Rock may have been the toughest of the bunch.

Channing Fugate Stats in his sophmore season;
191 carries for 1727 yards and 30 TD's along with 45 receptions for 625 Yards and 5 TD's in 14 games.
Channing Fugate's Stats so far his Junior Season:
148 carries for 1677 yards and 19 td's along with 1 td reception through 8 games. (Stats were turned in October 28th, so the LC stats would just add to these numbers.
I do not know what the rushing records are around the state but this kid is putting up some huge numbers and can catch the ball as well as run it. He is a complete RB and is just as talented as anyone this decade in the mountains.

He's good, but he's not close to Doug Howard good.

If we are counting NE then Josh Gross is the best I have seen in the 2000's. Speed, cutting ability, vision, hands, deceptive strength.

Jones - Belfry

How about putting some detailed stats to go with these names? It would help the rest of the state to form an opinion.

I have heard Coach Hilton say many times that if he "had wanted too he could have broken all the state rushing records with Shawn." Team was way to important for both of them to do that.

I think that is very similar to the way Josh was used. I very rarely seen him play more than one or two series in the third quarter. If the game was in hand Ivan would pull him. I would be scared to see what he could have done playing full games. Of course the competition level had a bit to do with it.

Lee Renfro from Southwestern, Ladale Rider from Whitley County. Couldn't find career stats for the guys I mentioned but found some season stats on KHSAA.
2004 Season Ladale Rider 8 Games 1798 yards 20 td's
2004 Season Lee Renfro 11 Games 2419 yards 36 td's
2004 Season Teddy Thompson 12 Games 1746 yards 20 td's
2004 Season Nik Blair 10 Games 1440 yards 24 td's
Don't know if there's any posters on here from Pike Central but had it not been for the injuries Gordon Varney could have been one of the best from the mountains IMO.

Stephen Cook and Jon Sizemore of Corbin are also deserving of being on this list.
