With the economy the way it is, unfortunately I witnessed an event at work today that made me glad I am still employed.
Without going into too many details about where I work, I will say that I work with someone who is not employed by the same company I work for, but we share the same building.
I was in the garage today when I saw his boss come in and start talking to him. They were talking very quiet and then there was a slight pat on the back before he left.
He walked up to me and said, "well, I'm done." It was about 10 minutes until close, so I assumed he was talking about going home for the day. I said, "yeah, I'm almost done too." He replied, "no, I mean...they just laid me off."
I didn't know what to say. This guy wasn't exactly expendable, so I'm not sure what they're going to do. I also found it quite odd that they didn't give him a week or two notice and apparently today was his last day.
To top it off, the guy was supposed to go on his one week vacation next week. It's not like they were having problems with the guy or anything. He was a good worker but they needed to make budget cuts.

I would have hated to have been in the managers or the employees position, because those are some very, very tough things to do.

Well here's the thing. It wasn't a "manager" who originally told him.
It was one of the guys that runs the service desk. They made the guy that runs the service desk tell him, IMO, because they were afraid to do it themselves.

Times are definitely changing. I hate it for him and all the people that lose their jobs as a direct result of this crisis. We are all going to be hurting before it's over.

Anyone could face a job loss at any time in the current economic crisis and belt tightening of companies.
Each one of us should be thankful for our job these days and times.

Its always sad to hear when anyone goes through this. I just pray that this guy along with the countless others land on their feet.
