Well, word has it in Letcher Co. that Martin County has dropped out of the tournament. Wow!!! I sure didn't see that one coming LOL
How does that happen when just a few days ago the coach posted on here that Martin would play??????
Does the powers that be in Martin Co. realize what kind of message this is sending to other teams, not to mention their own players. :lame:

They should be voted out of the Big Sandy Conference next season.

I think Letcher should join the conference with New HARLAN, EVARTS, CUNBERLAND, AND Leslie Co. We have also been talking to Knox Central. It would be a great conference. What do you think?

I know the Cougar coach is not happy with the way it has gone this year. He said that there shouldn't be any small/large divisions in a conference that doesn't play each other. I don't think it would be a bad idea if they can talk a few more teams into joining over there. I don't like the idea of them getting out of a conference that has over 10 teams to jump into one that only has 3 or 4 teams though. Martin Co. blows my mind, I really can't believe they are forfeiting again, I hadn't heard that until I saw CougarBabe's post. Oh well, I guess that is one less team Letcher Central will have to worry about while preparing to play for a conference championship.

Martin County should not have been placed in the large school division to begin with because their numbers just do not add to those the other schools. From what I have they will play in the post season grid but if this league contines to have two divisions they need look closer at the numbers.

It wasn't an issue when Martin County was winning the championship a couple years back. Teams have to be willing to stay in the conference during down years as well as strong years. You cant be in and willing when you are good and out when it's a down year.

We have kinda dealt with a similiar situation over here in the past couple of years. You can not pick and choose when you want to play. It's like Lambert #1 said, "it's just bad business". ALL teams suffer up and down years. I'm an outsider in this situation, but to me, the boys over in Martin County must not feel like nobody believes in them, and that's a terrible thing. Maybe Martin County's coach will have a change of heart and throw his hat back in the ring before this tournament starts. Do the right thing coach! Win as a team, lose as a team. It's possible to do both with dignity. There's no dignity in being a quitter.

This is not my choice, not to play ,I was told by the school superintedant we would not be playing. In the past there has been alot of this teams bailing out and not showing up for games. This conference has gone down hill, the format for the playoffs change year to year, this year three champions last year inter-division(small vs. large) and only one champion. Last year we were in the small group and were competetive and won the small side ,then the playoff format changed and we ended up playing all large schools so what gives? Did I complain ,no I just played the games, schools bailed on us for the past three years but we did not go bashing their kids or coaches, this has been the roughest year I have experienced , I begged the conference to keep us in the small group where we at least could give teams some competition but there were three votes for us and the rest were against. This was done even though I stated that our population in the schools(Inez and Warfield) had dropped and we had 22 outof 28 that had never played football, they voted to move us into the large group. Another reason for us is the geographical outlay, with the gas prices, we are the northern most team and all the schools in the large group(except JC) they are roughly 2hrs. away, all of the small schools are within 45min.(except Hazard) Now explain that one? Some on here have stated we should be kicked out, so be it, the superintendant has already stated that if we are not in the small or even the north side div. we will not be in the BSVC. next year.I am just a coach trying to teach kids to play football and this year has been difficult I find myself teaching basic fundamentals, ones that most were taught in the first season of youth league. Not taking anything away from our youth program because 2 thirds of our team did not play youth league. They are really a good group of kids just inexperienced and to see them at their schools getting teased and ridiculled is a little too much. One of the comments I read on here about what does this teach our kids? Humility I guess but I am not whining about it , it is what it is If these kids can weather the storm right now good things will happen to them in the future.

I Would Like To Say Thanks To The Hazard Coaches And Players. They Have Played 4 5a Programs This Season And Our Kids Have Stayed Together And Played As Hard As They Could. They Will Show Up And Play Any Team, I Think It Will Help These Kids In The Future. Good Luck Dawgs In Small Div. Of The Playoffs.

HAZFAN49,
I completely agree with you. Hazard came up here and lost 36-6 but went down swinging. That bunch of kids has learned more this year from losing games to bigger schools than they would have learned from playing smaller schools that they would have just ran the score up on. Your coaching staff has done an outstanding job with these kids both mentally and physically and I see them turning into excellent high school players because of it. Until this year I had never been a huge Wade Lyndon fan but after this season I do respect him. He came into the season thinking he could win the Big Sandy outright but a few injuries to a small school/team like he has and it is devastating and he has kept moral high and expectations large. You can learn and get better as a player and team while losing. I particularly respect him for the fact that he has not forfeited to anybody, his kid would not have accepted him telling them that they were going to forfeit and that's a direct relations of expectations from the coaches. Hazard has to much tradition and pride to forfeit or quit and everybody knows that about them. Good job Dawgs and the coaching staff down that way from a Cougar fan.

I heard that when Martin cancelled that Coach Howard called Harlan to come and play for LCC's 8th grade night and they wouldnt, any one know why?

Harlan had other commitments that had to meet. They were looking for their own home game because Leslie Co. forfeited on them for their homecoming. Not true, both coaches would have liked to hook it up one more time from what I hear. Howard and Woods are good friends and would have helped each other out if possible. Just ask MamaBear, she knows that both tried to help each other out of a bind.

Both teams were canceled on and needed home games. It sure would have been nice to have got to play again. I know both teams have improved and it would be a battle. I just hate that football season is coming to a close. I wish we had a couple of more weeks... Hopefully we can continue playing one another in the regular season.

one thing about it, it is a lesson learned. You cancel a game, then no one wants to pick you up in a game in fear of them doing that to them.

I got a better ideal Daddycat why don't New Harlan join the Big Sandy Conference. You will have teams like Letcher, Breathitt, Johnson Central, Perry Central, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Pikeville and Martin County(maybe). It would be great.
10-20-2008, 05:21 PM
that would be cool.

Yes New Harlan is a classy program. And they would be a great addition to the Big Sandy Conference.

I think that it should be looked into anyhow. These are feeder programs to schools that most of these boys would be playing against when they went to high school. Traveling would be the only issue that I can think of. That's my opinon anyhow.
