SC is not getting the big head at all. Obviously they've earned their title. They have a very good chance of beating Belfry this year. They're a very strong team and have proved in the past (Belfry vs. SC 2006) that they can do anything they set their minds to.

Paintsville has had GREAT crowds this football season! When you are dealing with a 1A school versus a 5A school one must realize that the crowd is going to be somewhat smaller. I think that Paintsville's football program is rebuilding and BRINGING BACK a lot of character to their program. As far as if the Apple Bowl was never played again between these two teams, I don't think that football players would leave Paintsville to play somewhere else. They made a choice when they enrolled in Paintsville. Paintsville's football team is a very close group of boys, they all stand behind each other. Extra curricular activities are wonderful but there are other inportant factors in life too.

MOST PROFITABLE????? You obviously haven't been to Danville, Boyle Co game.
12 to 15,000 every time they play.

As I said in another post.
Paintsville said that we are classless with are comments or some trash talking. I agree a few on here may have made some ****** comments. If you were at this game anyone with JCHS anything on there car had a hard time parking because they did not us parking around close. JCHS fans was not allowed to sit in there stands witch was about plum empty. They had people standing at their stand guarding it so we could not sit. That IMO that is classless, and that falls on the school and what their teaching!
Congrats JC, I hope you pinched a few pville jewels, just to give them a good feel of a lost game.Come on man bad post, we won let it be and lets go get some hard ware.

That game doesn't hold a candle to "The Catholic Bowl" with Trinity and St. X....I've been twice and each time there were 33,000+.

We must get to the FACTS, do you actually think that the players can tell the admin. etc. how to do parking etc. at the game. I personally did not like the way that the gates etc.were set up but that 's the way that they decided to do things. YOU must also remember that it is not up to the football players if the Apple Bowl is played or not. Once again, I think that admin. takes care of that also. I will go to the Apple Bowl if there is one. This past Wednesday listed all of the games played in the Apple Bowl and the scores. If my memory is corrrect the record is 20 for Tigers and 15 for the Eagles. I will always cheer for Paintsville because once a Tiger always a Tiger. I do support JC when they are not playing the Tigers, our community SHOULD stand together. I hope that both teams have an excellent future for playoffs this year. Too Fast, where did you go to school? i SORT OF KNOW.

I believe he said it was the most profitable public school game in the state of Kentucky.

I would think that there are more profitable rivalries in the "public schools" in this State. However, this has to be one of the most profitable in Eastern Kentucky.

You are correct, I was addressing the public side like the post stated.

Was not stated, but couldn't agree more. I've only been to one Boyle/Danville game and that was in 2004. Great atmosphere.

I have no doubt they'll continue to be the "Apple Bowl". What is in doubt, though, is the form it should take.
I'd suggest having two games. Let Central play teams like Ashland, Bell Co., Rockcastle Co., etc (good bigger EKY program). Paintsville could play Raceland, Fairview, Hazard, etc. (good smaller EKY program).
While I realize Central draws well in regular home games, one must believe it would be even better if you add the interested fans from the area that won't have a game to go to that night. After all, there's NOTHING to compete with games played on a Thursday night.

I can promise you that as long as the current staff is at Johnson Central there will never be two games played in the Apple Bowl. It will be Johnson Central and Paintsville or there won't be a game.

You sound like you've heard the Central staff discuss this very thing and sound sure of yourself.
Tell me...What is the Central staff's problem(s) with setting it up that way ??

The main problem with it right now is that that is a game on our schedule. As it stands, Central can barely find anybody who's willing to play us. Do you think we want to go to Louisville Shawnee and Hamilton, Ontario to find games? We'd much rather play good teams locally, but as it stands only Breathitt, Belfry and Sheldon Clark have been willing in the last couple of years (and kudos to them for scheduling us). If it weren't for finding St. Thomas More on the internet looking for a game, we would've had nine games on the schedule, maybe even eight if we couldn't have found Shelby County as a replacement for Shawnee. So that game with Paintsville reliably fills one slot on our schedule.
If they're not gonna play us and that costs us a game on our schedule, then that forces us to go drag the entire state again looking for more games. And if we have to go to that length and we finally find somebody to come play at Central, why in the WORLD would we then be interested in splitting the gate with Paintsville when we bring four or five times as many as fans as they do?????!?
10-07-2008, 10:52 PM
Maybe JC needs to try to schedule schools that are 5A schools. Their goal should be to play in their class.

It's a big part of Apple Day festivities. It would be a shame to let it go.
The -trick- with a "Bowl" is to go BIG, something more than just another game. When it's played as an "event", visiting teams are usually more willing to play. Sponsors could be solicited to help could pay a stipend for guest expenses (and some sort of hardware for winning the game).
You also seem to be making an assumption Paintsville will -never- improve. If the Tigers work to become a top 10 Class A team, they'll do their part in drawing interest. After all, for many years previously it was Paintsville that drew most of the attention.
Just some thoughts... :o

Paintsville has won more apple bowls...why now when they are losing to start discussing not playing it anymore? I hope paintsvilles team gets stronger every year. To back out of the Apple Bowl is just stupid on their part. I know they don't bring in that kind of money on any Friday night....Not to mention the people of Paintsville and Jc love this game and love the boys that play in it....just good braggin rights. I Really hope the Paintsville staff doesn't chicken out on us now .:dontthink

I hope that they continue the Apple Bowl... it is a tradition that has been going on as long as I can remember. It wouldn't be the same if PHS and JCHS had other opponents during that time... just remember someone has to win and someone has to lose!!!

Oh, Central has no intention of letting the Apple Bowl go. Coach Matney stated as much on his radio show, he wants to play this game every year; that's a matter of public record.
If Paintsville doesn't want to play it anymore, we'll still try and find a quality opponent, but there'd be no need for us to include them to split the gate on the game, because I don't care if PHS manages to schedule Cincinnati Colerain to come play them, they won't have as many fans there as Central will. They CAN'T have as many fans. Even when they used to wipe the field with us regularly before Matney came, we STILL always had more fans in the stands. It's just a numbers game because of the relative size of the schools (and it's even worse now since winning has make Eagle Nation hungry), so we'd just be basically be making a big donation to PHS football if we split the gate with them. We can still have a big bowl game at Central for Apple Day if we want to, that's for sure, with prizes and trophies and fireworks. But we'll keep what we make.

When I played at Paintsville we won all four years. So for some one to say Paintsville is never going to be competitive with JC is wrong. Every school is going to have years where the talent just isn't there, or the other school has more of it. Paintsville will be back, trust me. I don't think the coach has a much to do with it as the kids. I think what is happening is that they see JC getting all these new fields and they want to go to a school that has the latest equipment. When I played we didn't even have a weight room at Paintsville, we had to lift at the carriage house. The apple bowl will go on between these two teams for a long time. Who wants to be the "one " who stops it? Paintsville can't afford to as a lot of you have said.

Well once you mention it, and this is not meant to insult Paintsville, but for the next few years even basketball is going to be a less heated than usual with everything they have lost. So, you're right, the funds will be needed to keep athletics alive.

FIrst of all, do you actually think that former Tiger football players are going to send thier children to JC if there is no Apple Bowl?(Get Real) Do you actually think that the coach and players make this decision about if there is going to be an Apple Bowl or not? It just seems like when money gets involved in the picture people get crazy!(ONCE A TIGER ALWAYS A TIGER) Paintsville has a STRONG football program, matter of fact, STRONG in all athletic areas as well as a STRONG academic school. Parents can send their children to whatever school that they want but some parents like the small school atmosphere. (family atmosphere) Have you ever looked at the statistics of athletic and academic scholarships at Paintsville? Oh well, since we have many choices , good luck to JC in your choice to play Hazard. Oh by the way, is Hazard a 5A school? I didn't think so. You know that old saying, "Size Does Matter" Uhhh
