DEVIL,
I know you guys can't do much about the schedule. That was my point, you guys should be allowed to schedule tougher teams. What is the rule after you play the your distict games? Your right it wouldn't help to go up to 4A either.

Russell could do the same as Covington Catholic and Highlands and jump from 3A to 5A. That would up the competition level in the district significantly by adding Montgomery County, Woodford County, and Johnson Central. I wouldn't suggest that though.
This is how a Russell schedule could shape out beginning in 09.
Fleming County*
Lewis County*
West Carter*
Mason County*
Ashland
Ironton
Boyd County
Greenup County
Raceland
That's only 9 games which closes out their district as well as all local rivalry and money games. It also includes 4 good or very good teams. Russell could schedule another big school (a la Simon Kenton) to round out the schedule. 5 good teams is about the max Russell can afford to put into their schedule while keeping local money making games in as well.
Looking back though, they would just be exchanging East Carter for Fleming County and Lawrence County for Ironton in comparison to this year.
I think this boils down to show that even though Russell's schedule looks lackluster, it's about the best any AD could do while keeping the local money makers in the schedule.

Tomcat thank you for that info. I completley forgot about the money making angle.I can see how the AD's hands would be tied with that.
This is just my guess say you drop Greenup and Boyd and pick up West Portsmouth and Wheelersburg also keep Ironton. Also keep Ashland and Raceland. As of this year they are head and shoulders above GC and BC. The gate money would still be there plus it would help prepare Russell better for the playoffs. Anybody agree or disagree?
I want to make it clear that I mean in noway to bash any team I have mentioned in this post. I am just going by records.
Sorry Devil if i got hyper.

Schedules are already set for 09 and 10 except for one game. I would look for one of the bigger WV schools to fill the open dates.

Russell wins big on this one. Just hope this win builds confidence and not a fasle sense of security. And "NO" Russell has no conditioning. No running at the very the least before or after practice. If they don't do it on there own it don't get done and it shows. Wanting to come off the field in the 1st qtr. That would player come off and not back on.
Maybe if they play the JV and Fresh the 1st half and bring the starters on the second half no matter what the score up or down and finish the ball game with the staters ???????????
Get that DEVIL PRIDE back and make the run!!!!!!:devilflam :devilflam

Has anyone been to a Russell practice? The pass plays are there. I just wonder if the coaches are playing a little possum. Who knows. Still no reason for the Ashland game. If you have them use them.

Yes CovCath & Highlands both play up, but lets face it, they bring in alot more boys than any 3A school. If you live in that area and are a good football player, most attend those 2 schools. Just the way it is, if I lived there with kids who were good @ football thats where they would go. Russell wouldn't have the depth to compete in 5A, especially with the dwindling numbers. Now with Racelands financial troubles, I fully expect consolidation or absorption by Russell. In the next 5-10 years if not sooner. Now that team would probably be 4A or by that time with the numbers falling maybe 3A, but they could probably play up in 5A and compete with the big boys. Russell puts out more or matches the talent with most schools more than twice their size in numbers. Raceland does the same thing. It would make for one tough football team, depending on who was heading it up.
West and Lewis oughta just go down as wins, and let us schedule someone else and let them schedule someone else instead of a throbbing.

Raceland could move to 2A in a couple of years.. There numbers in the lower grades are increasing dramatically. i spoke to a coach from there yesterday and the younger grades are getting bigger.... They could see a jump down the road.. Russell will stay the same school and even though I joke about consolidation, i dont see that happening...
Russell will get beat by Raceland this year and then Raceland will have nothing stand out for years down the road.... Not meaning any disrespect but this is the year for Raceland.. after that .. who knows....

Of course you never know down the road. Russell absoloutely killed Raceland when these seniors were soph's in a jv game. I mean bad bad bad, could have been 100-0. I'd say there's probably only a 2-3 player difference for both teams. So things can change dramatically.
09-25-2008, 06:43 PM
Beetle, please do not underestimate this team. Yes, they killed them early in JV. But that was JV and not the varsity mix. That is whole different type of game. Even jokingly. Last year we did to them what Ashland did to us this year. Lets get by the district games and then we will judge the RAMS. Also, they stayed right with us and led until after the half. They got down and it was lights out. If they would have played the rest of the game it would have been a nail bighter.

I hope the players got there heads back on straight and are only worrying about East Carter this week.

Russell was in the game till the end of the third qtr. Sometimes things happen it's fball or any other sports for that matter.
Have you seen any practices this week? I bet Ivan has been driving the point home all week.

Russell was in the game by score only in the third quarter. After Ashland went up 20-10 and in the fourth quarter they just quit.
Hearts and heads seemed to be elsewhere from the very start. That cannot happen against anybody.

Thank's info FBALL. They will be fine, but they do need to get things worked out in the next 3 games.
Everybody needs to woe up on the horses. You can only beat on them so much before they lay down. This is just a analogy I am not really calling anybody a horse.

Nope not horses.
Looked more like little ponies that last game.
I don't think anybody needs to ease up on them. We still want the best for this or any Russell team. They are good kids and we love them. But they should remember what happened last week for as long as any of them play competitive sports. Remember it and learn from it. It was not pretty.
A loss is a loss and sometimes things do happen. Ashland played with alot of passion and enthusiasm. Russell could not match that emotionally or mentally. Last week didn't just happen though. It was created by ego and overconfidence IMO.
Not that it is the end of the world or even this season. It is just that they are capable of so much more than was put out last week.
Hopefully this week they shut us all up. I don't mean by the score either. 7-6, 100-0, win or lose. I mean by effort and attitude. Play hard and do your best is all anyone can ask but it is also something that should be expected.

Yeah the fumble did take alot of life out of them. But then after a TD its 13-10 late in the third quarter. The life should have been back. Mistakes happen. It should make someone more determined not lifeless.
The fight should have been taken to Ashland and not among teammates.

Any changes made for this one by Russell?
Anybody know if Huffine is back for East Carter or if he is still injured?
