Russell has had the Backyard Brawl trophy since it's inception.

Russell has won 8 or 9 in a row and 19 out of the 21 times they have played Greenup.

I was impressed with the Devils they came out and attacked quick, not a sluggish start but was there to play ball. The run back by David Bailey really set the mood for the rest of the night. Great game DEVILS I enjoyed every minute of it!!! Justin Mitchell has really matured into a valuable receiver. The hits kept on coming and coming........L:CE_DP_SteK out Boyd County here we come!

No one can say that AJ Cordle is afraid to run the ball or take a hit. he had some of the hardest hits of the game, either delivering or getting them and never missed a beat. Had what 2 or 3 TD passes in the first game..... Great job AJ..
Most of all, the DEVILS looked very impressive on O and D compared to a team that is predicted to go deep in their play-offs. Only thing I can say is they better move the game to the FRONT YARD because RUSSELL owns that side of the property and taxes were due tonight. Pay the DEVIL their dues and better luck next week.... Greenup will score on people this year and have the ability to win a bunch of games.....Russell on the other hand,, well lets just say that after tonight.. The line loooooked really good for the first game, alot better than predicted by ALOT OF READERS AND people inthe area......

Russell was pretty impressive tonight. Drew Abrams and David Bailey ran the ball with much more authority than they did a year ago. More power and more speed.

The offensive and defensive lines are no longer a concern.

Very good start for Russell. Greenup just couldn't match up physically.

Great game Russell. A.J. you are the REAL DEAL.

AJ may have a great year and be "the real deal" before the seasons over but to say the Independent "forgot" someone on the cover is a little over the top isn't it?? He was an unknown commodity coming into the season...Why would they put him on the cover?? Lets let him play a few varsity games before we tout him as front cover material...He's off to a nice start and we're glad he's one of the good guys...Hopefully they'll do a post season cover with the whole team lifting another state championship trophy!!!

Humility is truly a virtue. You are correct, to earn respect far outweighs just being given it.......But I disagree about being unknown, he did step in and fill for Jones last year while Tyler battled his ankle injury. Craft on the other hand, did impress me with his accuracy and vision of his receivers. Hopefully Craft oneday may go on to college ball with his talent.

The preview cover was a joke. They put the three quarterbacks that run the spread. Wilson is probably the best of the three. None of them are even close to being the best players in the area.

It was a very good performance to start the season...more impressive than I expected actually. That was a good point about Abrams and Bailey running with great authority. They are a tremendous one-two punch. Cordle ran the ball well when needed, too. The passing game looked decent for the first game. I would really like to see them consistently use Dillon over the middle because he looks like he could be another great weapon, but I suppose that will come as the year progresses.

Essentially, it was a total domination, though. From what I saw, Russell should have a good chance of winning every game they play this season and post-season. This team appears to be on par with the last few year's teams when it comes to talent level and the execution might even be a little better than expected right now. I had confidence in the secondary, linebackers, quarterback, running backs, and receivers. My only question coming into the game was if the line(s) would perform well enough to keep things rolling. It looks like they did last night. I am sure they will face tougher tests in the future with Greenup's spread offense not really posing a "power" running type of threat, but hopefully they will be up to the challenge.

Great start to the season!

I certainly wasn't saying it was a good cover...I just was making a point that based on the theme and AJ's lack of exposure last year that it would be hard to put him on a pre-sesaon cover touting the best RETURNING qb's...Certainly was not a knock on AJ...I think he's going to be a dandy this year!!!

With that being said, if the team comes out next week thinking they are GREAT after this game with Greenup they can easily stub their toe in the home opener...Boyd, for some reason is always a tough game it seems even though we own the all-time series...Remember, they were the only blemish on the '05 State Champ's resume...

Stay focused...We haven't accomplished anything yet...

Totally agree about staying focussed and not getting the big head. Boyd played well against East Carter and will not roll over for anybody. The Lions have alot of confidence with the way they ended last season.

I wasn't saying AJ belonged on the cover. Just don't feel the other qbs did. If you want to highlight the best of the area then there are ALOT of other players in the area that I would have chosen.

20 passes in a game. That is what I want to see at least one game this season.

With Mitchell, Dillon, Abrams, and Bailey all receiving, someone should be open on every play.

DEFENSE played really well last night. Dline got pressure on Craft all night. Linebackers flew to the ball with discrimination against green jersey's in their hearts last night. DB's coverage was much improved. Rogers played well in his first game. There were coverage sacks, and sometimes Craft was forced to tuck it and go when he didn't want to. He was really dragging in the second half, slow to get up. He spent almost every play on the ground.

Get focused for BC, they have jumped on some very good Russell teams in the past looking past them to the next game. BC is a very good team and has quite a few ex Russell players on the sidelines. So BC more than any other team is going to be very prepared for you all. Do the same for them.

There are several good players out there this year but I can't think of a true marquee player like there have been in years past...I can see why they picked those QB's if they decided to go with QB's but there are definitely others who were just as worthy to be on there...

I know this isn't directly related to the Russell/Greenup game...but did you see where Cabell Midland (who we scrimmaged and looked pretty good against) beat the two time defending WV state champion Parkersburg last night? It's good we got to prepare for the season by playing such a good team.
#25
Great win for the DEVILS, they were just TOO overpowering for Greenup Co.,
the line really impressed me last night I know that a lot of questions were answered with their domination up front.
#26
Abrams and Bailey looked good as usual and A.J. really took control of the offense, it was just an all around good effort from everyone.

They were chosen because of "The System".

Although there may not be a Matt Thomas, Kasey Clark or Josh Gross in the area there are still some great players.

Denton, Carver, Logan, Abrams, Dillon, Carter, Welch, Richardson come to mind immediately as being better football players than the three on the cover.

I did notice where Cabell Midland beat Parkersburg. Very impressive.
