Belfry 2009 schedule?
#1
What will Belfry do in 2009 about there schedule? East Carter and Shelby Valley contracts are up. maybe Magoffin will be up because that won't be a district game.

I know scheduling is hard. I would personally like to see all three of these teams off of the schedule.
#2
I'd like to see Belfry playing Highlands or Covington Catholic, hopefully Belfry and Prestonsburg can schedule one another again, and I'd also like to see the Pirates play another state power.
#3
I don't think they will get Shelby Valley off their schedule. That one don't bother me as bad because they are on the rise and improving. East Carter, I see no way they stay on, or if Magoffin isn't in the district next year they won't be on.
As for replacements. Whoever will play them.
As for Highlands and Cov. Cath., no way would either do a home and away. As for Prestonsburg, Belfry would love that to, but you can't make them play you.
A West Virginia school would be a possibility. Logan moved up to 3A over their and are desperate for teams, it wouldn't exactly be the hardest game ever but a decent gate and better than East Carter. I also wouldn't be shocked to see a Letcher Central appear on the schedule.
#4
I think Letcher Central would be a good one to schedule.
#5
They need to upgrade bigtime. I understand it is tough to find people to do home and home contracts, but IMO they need to schedule one really hard away game each season, even if there is no return committment.

I would do away with Lawrence Co, Shelby Valley, East Carter
#6
I would love to see a Belfry-Wayne match up but that will never happen because the Pioneers are committed to games within the Cardinal Conference.

Now a power team in Lexington or Louisville would be great to see or even Bell County.

I agree with Belfry wins could see Letcher Central or P'burg.

Belfry would destroy my alma mater Logan.

I know that Bluefield is always in need for teams to play.

But I miss Ironton.

Russell and Belfry used to play each other every year when they were in the district together. I know it would be hard because of the playoff system the way it is but it would still be nice to have them play each other during the season again.
#8
Belfry attempted to schedule Wayne, but they declined. But that is def. understandable because they play a brutal schedule already and in West Virginia the tough schedule can kill your playoff chacnes, which I don't like.
The thing about doing just an away game with no home is you lose the gate, which is costly.
Maybe they could look to London area, like one of the Pulaski County schools, South or North Laurel, or Corbin.
Russell would be nice, but neither team would agree to that not in 1,000 years.
#9
BTW I miss Ironton, and I know ppl from Ironton and they miss us. That was such a great game for Belfry.
#10
I would love to see Belfry and Bell Co start playing each other!!!!!!
#11
I understand the $$/gate issue, but the schedule must improve. This years schedule for example WILL NOT prepare the Pirates for the playoffs.

Phone calls should be made to:

GRC, Letcher Central, Hazard, South Laurel, Middlesboro, Raceland, Prestonsburg, Scott County, Lexington - name it, Madison Central, Richlands (VA)

That would be a nice list to start. Those teams would be better games than East Carter or Lawrence Co and are not that much further away.
#12
Forgot to add -

Southwestern, Pulaski Co., Clay Co., Leslie Co. (most years)
#13
Other options - (little further away)

Montgomery Co., East Jessamine, Harrison Co., Woodford Co.
#14
if you think Belfry is bad shape for 2009 in scheduling , Sheldon Clark has find six games as this is the last year for contracts with Perry Central, Fairland , Ohio, Lawrence County, Rowan County, Bell County and Paintsville. I know that Hager does have Johnson Central on the slate next year.:letsparty

Id love to see Belfry play Bluefield or Richlands Va....either would be a challenge to the Pirates and not a terribly bad drive......Both are top notch...
#16
Richlands seems like a good fit.

The speed of Bluefield would def. have helped Belfry prepare for Central last year. That bunch from Bluefield is so fast. It would be a tough match up but a good game. I do agree with everybody though, upgrading the schedule is a must. Coach was def. not happy with their schedule the past couple of years and I'm sure he has already started working on next years schedule. It is a must.

i was thinking the same thing on richlands va,and maybe the kingsport tn school, there always top 10 in tenn and not that far of a drive

The best regional Out of State Teams:

WEST VIRGINIA:

Wayne- Obvious choice, but doesn't look like it will happen

Matewan or Gilbert- Both are traditionally strong, would bring huge crowd, but Belfry would probably domiante the series.

Bluefield- Great choice, a little over 2 hour drive

Capitol, Riverside, Nitro- All WV 3A powerhouses, all less than 2 hours. Capitol and Riverside would definately let Belfry see some speed.

TENNESSEE

Dobbyns Bennett- 2 hour drive, big school, big tradition

Science Hill- Same as above

Sullivan South- Rising program, 2 hours

VIRGINIA

Richlands- Less than 2 hours, strong tradition, usually not to Belfry's level, State Semi's last season

Gate City- Less than 2 hours, very good prgram, state semi's last season

NORTH CAROLINA

Asheville High School- May be NC, but it is a straight shot on US 23 and just a little over 3 hours

BTW here is anotyher idea I ahd that I posted elsewhere in regards to this same subject of how to upgrade the schedule:

Heck, this is alot simpler than it sounds. All Belfry has to do is take Week 2 and invite one out of area team to come to CAM. Get one of the Pirates quality backers (Massey maybe?) to take the sponsoring rights and call it the ______ (fill in sponsor) Pigskin Showcase. Make it a festive atmosphere and invite an out of area, yet still regional, middle school to play the Belfry Middle School. Bring out some inflatables and some booths to the soccer field, slap the sponsors name all over the place, get the radio stations out there.

If Belfry takes on a Rockcastle, Bluefield, et all in Week 2 at home with this kind of atmosphere I GUARANTEE you won't have trouble filling the place (Belfry could play Jenkins and still be close to capacity!). The sponsor money goes to cover the visitors gas and give them a little extra for playing Belfry and putting a "L" on their record Big Grin

I went to Gilbert & even in our dominate days...I don't think we could compete.
Matewan definately don't want none. The Bluefield game would be a nice one. But I would say that Belfry probably wants to get a team in there that they could beat though.

Belfry would perennially be one of the top 10 teams in WV ragrdless of class, and recently Belfry could have very well have been the best team over there. Belfry could beat Bluefield, and probably would the majority of the time.

In my opinion I would take Shelby Valley off the schedule and put a better team on it so that it will make them better to get some more competition.

I guarentee that they would be a top 10 team. Maybe even top 5. I like Belfry but don't think they would dominate over there. Wheeling Central Community College...I mean High School would be the team to beat over there. They're "A" and could handle most "AAA" & all "AA", "A" schools here in KY. The only team Wheeling would have trouble with in WV would be Parkersburg. Belfry would be in the Championship most yrs. in WV. Bluefield would give them trouble though.TongueirateSho

With the future consolidation of Mingo Co. WV in 2010, Belfry looks to cash in on it. When the consolidation happens, we look to see a lot of Mingo Co. players leave for the border. The school will be in between Burch & Matewan. Belfry will get some (more) Williamson players & probably some Matewan boyz too. I don't think Tug Valley will be affected that much. It would be too far for the Gilbert boys and Belfry probably don't want anyone from Burch...LOL. It will be intresting to say the least. Good luck Belfry.
#29
The above post is most like accurate forshadowing. Not going to make a lot of Belfry opponents happy, but Belfry has no control over the fact that Mingo's new consolidated high school will force Williamson kids to travel OVER 30 minutes per day one way to get to the new school. On the other hand, they could travel 5-10 to get to Belfry.

Will Belfry play Logan this year or next?
