Like ESPN's Title Town USA, who is title town in eastern Kentucky? This includes all-sports & academic achievements.
07-16-2008, 09:01 AM
Well Ii dont like em but you gotta go with Ashland Tomcats.
07-16-2008, 10:27 AM
Gonna have to go with Russell. Their Academic Teams and Science Olympiad teams are usually tops in the state. Basketball team hurts them, they are usually not that good in basketball. Football is good. Baseball is decent. Track is good and so is soccer. The girls however set them apart. They dominate EKY in just about every sport in the girls division. Especially track and softball.

Ill go with Johnson Central. Their Academic team is the only future problem solving team to win 3 international FPS titles. They have also won 8 Regional Governor’s Cup championships. Theirbaseball team has made it to the state tournament and acually won a game. Boys basketball is normally so so. Had a state chamion is wrestling this past year. Track team normally has atleast two kids who go to state.

Paintsville, Ashland, and Belfry.

Given that Ashland is the only school in Ky with a National Basketball title I'm gonna go with Ashland.

The problem I have with Title Town is that it will vary throughout the years.
Pikeville (winning the football championships) could easily have been named Title Town in the late 80's, but recently, you could make an argument that Belfry is Title Town with their football championships in recent years.
Whoever is hot right now is more likely to be named Title Town, but someone hot right now, might not be in 10 years; so I don't think we can ever name an official Title Town.

Everyone in my question I wasn't referring to high schools, I was referring to towns.
Example:
Johnson Central/Paintsville= Paintsville
Perry Central/Hazard= Hazard
Shelby Valley/Pike Central/Pikeville= Pikeville

Not even close to the Ashland area. Ashland, Russell, Raceland, Greenup, Boyd Co., Rose Hill. Now this probably dwarfs Paintsville in pop. though.

Just how many counties are you going to include? Why dont you just throw in Cabell, Wayne, and Lawrence Co. Ohio, and combine them all together while your at it. How about just one county at a time.

Ashland-Blazer has 11 State Football Championships
Russell has 2 Football State Championships
Greenup Co. Has 1 Football State Championship
Boyd Co has 1 Football State Chamionship
That's 15 State Titles for 2 counties in football only.
Add in Basketball and Baseball and you'll have even more State Titles.
If you want to count District and Regional titles and we'll be getting into the 100's.
The North is "Title Town" in Eastern Ky!

I think they are asking about Title TOWN
Not Title COUNTY
Not Title REGION
Johnson Central is located within the city boundaries of Paintsville
How many of the schools mentioned are within the city boundaries of Ashland?

Paintsville has a state championship is baseball, and basketball. 2 1A State Runners up. When John Pelphrey played high school basketball they got 3rd in the beachball classic. They beat #1 ranked team DaMatha Catholic. 2 Mr.Basketball's. Tucker Howard state runner-up in Mr.Baseball. The home of 4-5 MLB player (Johnny LaMaster,Willie Blair,Mike Minix....ect). And the school has a bunch of Rewards on Academics.
Johnson Central state championship in wrestleling, Ranked in state top 25 when Bart Williams,Tim Pelphrey, and Jimmy Daniels played. Alot of success in Academics. Great High school football coach Jim Matney.
Johnson County is title county Eastern Ky
