Breathitt won 28-27 in overtime when Russell missed the extra point. Maybe the two best teams I have seen in recent memory in Eastern KY.
Great game.

That game was amazing to watch. Belfry had the loaded backfield with Childers, Howard, and Jones. Prestonsburg had Trevor Compton, Joe Blackburn, Jesse Chaffins, and John Mark Stephens... What a battle that was![\QUOTE]
[quote=Sarrr]I'm going to ditto this one. I didn't see the 6A championship this year, but heard it was a better one (and I'm kinda sad I missed it).
'06 Belfry at Pikeville was also a great game, but not quite the '04 OT season closer at Vipperman, the last time a regular season would end there for BHS. In hindsight, Harmon was a Sophomore that year, and until we got back to Belfry and were talking about the game with the players, I was thinking to myself "I bet Pikeville College is salivating over that kid for next season"
BTW BCS, I thought the '04 game was closer, like a 2point conversion was the difference? 18-16 maybe... Eh, my memory's crap these days.
Belfry beat Prestonsburg twice that year. The regular season game was 20-14 Belfry in OT. The Regional Finals (3rd Round) after Prestonsburg knowcked off #1 ramked Breathitt Co. and the score was 28-12.
Neither was the last game at Vipperman. The last game at Vipperman was a 39-17 blasting of Russell in the state semi-finals. Howard had 20 carries 201 yards & 2 TDs with one called back, Jones had 19 carries 199 yards & 4 TDs, and Gross had 32 carries 208 yards and 2 TDs.
That team went 14-1 after rushing for 576 yards and winning their 2nd consecutive Class AA championship against Owensboro Catholic.

The Male-Trinity championship game from a few years back
Breathitt-Lawrence in 1997, I think
Russell-Mercer chamionship game
Just to name a few

Ive seen a lot of games over the years, Ashland v. Ironton, Pikeville v. Beechwood, North v. South Laurel, even P-burg v. Paintsville, but the best game I believe I have ever seen especially in a rivalry game was the 1988 Apple Bowl. I believe Paintsville won over JC in double overtime. Final Score 23 - 20. Mitchell Johnson was QB for JC and Holbrook was QB for PHS. Trimble was coaching JC then and his team was big and strong. Had Deaton who played for Marshall and Hall in the backfield guaranteed 5 yards every carry. After neither team could get a field goal in 1st OT, PHS stopped JC's Hall on first two carrys then Pelphrey cam out of nowhere to tip a pass away from a wide open JC receiver. 4th down failed to convert and PHS kicked a field goal for the win. I think that play by play is right it was 4 to 5 deep around the rails with the bleachers full at PHS. Great game with both teams undefeated coming in to the game.

I could never choose one game. There are too many. To sum it up alittle, I would have to say all Highlands vs. Cov. Cath. games that Highlands won and Highlands vs. Bell Co. games(of course only the ones Highlands won).
Highlands vs. Boyle in the 2004 state game I liked, basically because Boyle took our title the year before.![Wink Wink](https://bluegrassrivals.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.png)
Acutally it was Lex. Cath. but I really liked beating Boyle in '04

2002 Pike County Bowl
Shelby Valley 27 East Ridge 22
Joe Wyatt gave Shelby Valley the lead with a 37 TD run mid way through the fouth quarter. SV had about 308 yds of rushing offense. I believe ER had about 150 yds in penaltys which probally cost them the game. I rember ER had a TD run at secs before half time but was called back for clipping. This game marked the first time a Pike County Bowl Competition was counted for a District Game

State Championship (don't remember the teams) The team is backed up close to their own endzone. The QB takes the snap and runs backwards into his endzone. The time runs out and he throws the ball up in the air. The other team catches the ball and should have won the game because the QB was never on the ground or out of bounds. He threw it up in excitement. The officials blow the call and say they accidently blew the whistle to stop the game. It seems like it was Murray and NCC maybe?
That was actually Beechwood's QB that threw the ball up in the air. You are right, Beechwood should have lost the game. That was during thier dynasty run in the 90's.
The best game I have ever seen was the state game between NCC and Danville in '06. These teams have great battles in the past (missed xpoint '01), but the '06 game was unreal. NCC came back and scored 21 points in the last 6 minutes to win the game. Great win for a legendary coach (Coach Schnieder)

Ashland/Ironton 97?? It was Josh Nichols and Jack Smith's senior year. Smith was already out though with the broken ankle. I remember Ashland being up by more than 2 TD's with about 3 minutes to go and Ironton made the comeback. It was definetly exciting.

Brohm vs. Bush... no other game comes close. In terms of Belfry games here is a short list of memorable wins and losses.
Belfry vs. Pburg 2004 (Volume 1 and 2)... both were fantastic games. That was the best Pburg team I have ever seen in person, including the 2001 State Runner-Up. I have never seen a more anticipated game in EKY and never seen a crazier atmosphere with fans literally crawling into trees to watch.
2003 State Finals, Belfry vs. Etown... Etown led by current Auburn QB Chris Todd, Alabama DE Brandon Deaderick, UK Zipp Duncan, and a stable of excellent recivers vs. Jones/Howard and Belfry's run game... OT thriller with Jones scoring on 4th and goal to seal the first state title.
2005 State Semi's, Russell vs. Belfry.... Russell jumps all over Belfry to the tune of a 20-0 lead... Belfry storms back to score 14 2nd half points and cut the lead to 6... Numerous big plays by both teams, including Belfry's late drive as they went for the win that culminated with Kasey Clark intercepting the pass in the endzone.
2004 State Championship.... Belfry vs. O'Cath... Record setting QB Zack Bernard vs. Belfry's run game. Pirates dominated the game but never could pull away. Chris Varney ices it with the INT.
Belfry vs. Sheldon Clark Regional Finals 1998... Heavily favored Belfry led by Jonathan Wright has a date set-up with Jared Lorenzan and #1 Highlands with a win over the team they had beat earlier in the seaosn by 4TD's. SC never quits and forces OT, in OT Matney goes for the 2 point conversion and Moe Spradlin crawls over the goalline (literally, WYMT's video showed he was down at the 1 and crawled in) to steal the victory. The game prior Belfry defeated 10-1 Bell County 14-13.
1995 2nd Round and Regional Finals... Belfry started by winning an epic 7-0 victory on the road at Log Mountain against 10-1 Bell County in a game that was decided on the last play of regulation as Brad Hatfield caught the TD pass from Jeremy Howard. Next came Leslie County and Tim Couch in a game I swear that half of Eastern kentucky attended. Belfry lost to Couch 28-20 in a back and forth battle.
1995 or 1996 Belfry vs. Pikeville Belfry win against the Brent Coleman and Eddie Duramus led Panthers in the mud. Game was 0-0 throughout as neither team could gain yards. The score was either 0-0 or 6-0 Pikeville as Belfry marched down the field. They got inside Panther territory and benefitted from two straight pass intereference calls with no time on the clock. Finally Belfry completes a TD pass to win the game.

'97 Lawrence vs. Breathitt IMO
Heck of a game and crowd. I've never seen that many people at a high school football game that isn't on the state championship stage.

Allen Central vs Knott County Central "07" it was tied up 36 to 36 late in the fourth AC was backed up close to KCC's endzone AC ran the ball some 36 seconds to go AC passed freshman Mickie Parsons caught a 45 yard pass with both feet in bounds then fell out of bounds that stopped the clock at 1.5 seconds to go the fans were on their feet screaming field goal, kick it. Logan Crowder kicked the field goal from the 28 yard line it looked as if it was going to go right past the goal post but at the last moment the ball sailed left through the goal post making the final score 39 to 36 that was an amazing game!

A memorable game, can't say it was the the best, was the Leslie Co. game against Highlands, I believe it was '95 with Tim Couch. It was a playoff game at Highlands and Leslie Co. was the predicted winner, ESPN, and all of Tim Couches followers were there. It was a circus to say the least.
