I honestly think that he will join John Pelphry's staff at Arkansas, he would be a very good recruiter having been a high school basketball coach, but its just my opinion.I can't see him leaving Paintsville.........He loves the Ville as much as it loves him!
Best of luck to him on whatever he does!

Just a thought...why wouldn't someone want to give someone all the praise and glory while they are alive if they deserve it??? When your dead, yeah they may hold a SPECIAL CEREMONY and put you on a pedestal, but you won't care if your dead unless Jones and Preston can put life back in your veins. You wouldn't know what people were doing for you. I believe in telling them now so they know how I feel...and that leaves no reason for uncertainty!

I dont think he will leave Paintsville. But I put $ on him jumping into politics with both feet. He has already ran for city counsil and was the biggest vote getter. I heard thru the ole vine that he has his eyes set in the Mayor race. Best of luck to him and Jayme. They have their kids up and out, now some make up time.....

in elementary boys at paintsville think that the basketball players are wonderful...and they hold BMR to God status!!!! Just take a look at the end of their bench and look at those young Tigers I am talking about the ones sitting on the floor...that just want to give the boys water and towels!!! Its an HONOR to be with them as a team!!! and that what BMR has taught..the importance of traditions and discipline!
Good post here SA  . I certainly agree and can identify to some extent. I am a fan and alum of a small class A school (Raceland) and that is the way that the football program is looked at by the community and younger kids there. They haven't won a State Championship and all the regional titles that Paintsville has in basketball under Runyon but they have won multiple district titles (18 I believe) and been to several regional finals.
This is about Coach Runyon and Paintsville though, I apologize for getting off track if anyone thought that I was (I am kind of new to this). Coach Runyon is a Legend in the Mountains and it is well deserved. Good luck to him in any and all things that he may want to do in the future. Paintsville athletics are better because of him. Runyon in that regard is like Walter Brugh, long tme Paintsville football coach and another legend in that area of the state.

Good luck to whoever the coach is that will follow him. I personally wouldn't want that job......yet. I guess what I am saying is that in my opinion as a coach you don't want to be the man that follows a legend, you want to be the man that follows the man that follows a legend.

It was great being at the game last night to watch him coach his last game in the mountains. I'll never forget that. I just wanna say he is a very classy guy and a great coach. I remember when I was in 8th grade we all got the big idea that we could swing off the big blue curtains on the stage and land out on the gym floor. Welll needless to say that didn't quite happen, the curtains broke and made the loudest sound ever, he came storming out of his the locker room with a look that could kill and everyone on that stage knew what was coming next, the hardest paddling I had ever got in my life, lol.

Coach Runyon deserves every ounce of respect he receives! He has been an amazing coach and an outstanding citizen to Paintsville. I will be sorry to see him go, but I wish him all the best.

Let me tell you something..and I am going to try to be nice about it...Coach runyon has helped so many kids at paintsville that its not even funny!! He has been there to make sure kids who couldn't afford things had exactly what they needed...if something goes wrong in one of his kids lives he is right there for them!!! Coach runyon is a wonderful man...and has stayed at a school for his entire career of being a HS coach NOT BECAUSE of MONETARY REASONS..but rather because he loved the game and loved Paintsville...
SO yes ...I find it courteous...and just a kind gesture to show him that after all he has done..THAT HE IS APPRECIATED and WILL BE MISSED!!! No school in most of the state can even understand..because if they have a coach that is worth keeping like Bill Mike ..than as soon as the they bring the money they leave it all behind to better their own careers...Bill Mike stayed because he loved it..because he has been offered several Tickets out of Paintsville..... But he chose us at Paintsville!!!
and in case you didn't know...BMR had a tatoo done for his 96 team ....now what HS coach do you know that has done that ??? Not many I'm guessing!!
BMR and family are a class act family..and I wanna thank them for their dedication, time, love and support for the many years they put in at PHS!!!

Gez Secret Agent, did you ever possibly think that he stuck around PHS because he got a pay check for it? If he was as dedicated as you may think, why is he jumping ship at the first possible change of jumping! (Just reaching his retirement date). Now, true dedication is when you see a teacher still teaching after about 40 years. I know coaches at PHS that have coached out in the weather for longer than he did in a gym. Something else, YES he has helped alot of kids in alot of ways but guess what, dont ask me to start naming names and situations where some kids, well to put nicely, fell or got pushed thru some cracks.
He is a good guy, no one is taking that from him to get on here and go on and on and on and on and on and basically compare him to Christ is going a little too far. About the tattoo, we all have saw it several times in the last 10 years, he made sure of that
I wish him and his family the best, they will do fine, that is just what kind of people they are.

22lb. Bass...maybe you need to check the payroll at Paintsville...he didn't receive a big HUGE check like Matney and Starnes, and others get around the region...and No I don't think he stayed because he received a paycheck because he has had higher ..better paying positions offered..He stayed because of dedication!!! And also ..he can't help everyone ..especially those who don't want his help..or their parents intervene....
And last I didn't compare him to Christ thats just stupide and absolutely uncalled for from you....but I am saying that he is a good role model....Something more Men and boys need to look up to!!!!
Name another coach that has been coaching at the same school in Ky (basketball) for as long as he has????????????????????

I agree with 22 on this. Everyone has skeletons in their closet, even the Big Blue Legend. Coach for Mayor.

This thread needs to stay on topic and.
Also a statement from myself as a member Not a staff member...
Coach Runyon is highly respected across the state and has done tremendous things at Paintsville.
State Championship, 8 regional championships, numerous D1 players...this thread is not the place to bash a retiring coach who is a legend and arguably the most successful mountain coach of his generation.
As my wise grandmother always said "If you don't have anything good to say, keep your mouth shut".

I don't think it was dedication as much as loyalty. His situation is similar to Pitino's situation. Kentucky treated him like a God and he knew, however, because of monatary reasons he jumped ship to Boston. If he would have been loyal to UK he would have continued to be treated like a God, and I think BMR is smart for staying all these years because he knew know other school would treat him as good as Paintsville, not monatarally, but in a way that's worth more than money.

He didn't stay at Paintsville cause they "treat him like God". His entire family were Tigers, he was a Tiger, his children were Tigers, his entire family lives here etc.
03-14-2008, 07:34 PM
Let's not forget BMR is a tiger through and through---that's why he stayed all these years, for less pay than he would have made at another school.
Matney is a great coach---but nothin' but a hired gun. When bigger and better is offered he'll be out the door so fast it will knock the feathers off the eagle.

Actually you need to reread it, I was talking about Pitino when I used that term. I just said that no one would have treated him better than Paintsville when I was talking about BMR. I also used the term "loyalty" to describe why he stayed too, which would iimply what you just said, with his entire family being Tigers, and he stayed loyal to that. We agree on that I think you just misinterpreted my post.

But you did say coach Runyon was in a similar situation. That's why I thought you were sayin he stayed cause they treated him like God.

Haha. I know don't take it so literal. Being an exact comparison and similar are different, and I never said they treated BMR like a God even if it looked that way.
