Hatfield-McCoy Bowl?
#1
Does anyone know if the Hatfield-McCoy bowl will be played this year?
#2
I had heard that KY was trying to get out of that bad situation and try to start a new one on a rotating schedule with Virginia maybe. Here a year, there a year, etc., etc....
I personally would like to see KY get out of that crappy situation and start there own with Virgina or maybe even against the 16th region teams.
Paintsville,Pikeville,Belfry,SV, ER,PC,AC,SF,Phelps,JC, P-burg,SC,BL,Lawrence Co, and Magoffin Co would represent the 15th
East Carter,West Carter,Raceland,Fairview,Bath, Fleming, Ashland,Morgan,Lewis, Boyd,Rowan, Greenup,Russell, and Menifee represent the 16th.
This is just a suggestion though.

I'm not really familiar with the hatfield McCoy Bowl, what do you mean "a bad situation"?

The KY side gets nothing out of this. Why wouldn't this game be alternated between the two states.
#5
not with VA - they don't allow this sort of stuff (yet)

It is the major fundraiser for the football program at Matewan. Why would we want to rotate it with anybody?

Get ready to start playing yourself then Mr./Mrs. Greedy.

Why would Massey Energy sponsor this game if all the proceeds are goin to Matewan. That just doesn't make sense to me. And I too wish KY would quit playin this game. KY hasn't won this game since I was a senior and played in it (2003) and if I'm not mistin we are the only KY team to win it in the last 7-8 years. The refs screw KY every year, they tried to screw us. We had almost 200 yards in penalties, lol. But then again it's not just the refs, had all the ORIGINAL players that got invited woulda played, KY prolly woulda won a couple of em the last few years. Still though, unless this game is gonna start rotatin with KY I would get out of it too.

We won it in 2000 when I played in it.

If you could get some local companies like Ashland Oil, CAM, ETC. to sponsor this IMO it would be a great idea and get some good crowds.

The reason could be that Don Blankenship is a graduate of Matewan High School...

so could be a reason they help with the fund raising at Matwan correct?

The 16th region teams currently have the NEKY all-star game that they play in. It is East vs West. East teams include Russell, Ashland, Boyd County, Fairviewl, Raceland East Carter, Lawrence County. West teams include Mason County, Clark County, Fleming County, Nicholas County, Rowan County, Morgan County, Lewis County.

Yea with this game going on , I dont know how that game would work, IMO with the Hatfield-McCoy bowl going alot of the players from these schools would not play in the Hatfield-McCoy game that would play in the NEKY game

The class of 2000 and 2003 are the only KY teams that have won it in the 2000's.

Since we are talking about football - The Athletic Complex is name for Massey Energy but the naming rights for the football stadium belong to CAM (Central Appalachian Mining). The President of CAM at the time was a Belfry Alumni.

isn't this the game that used to be called the kiwanis bowl and was played in williamson?

That is correct.

No wonder you want out...Smile
#24
I'm from Gilbert and have played in this game. Why would you want out. It's an extra game to play. I didn't go to college, so it was another chance to get to strap the pads on. I don't care who funds it or where the money goes as long as I get to play. JMO

The game is still going on. The ref crews are rotated every year between KY and WV refs. I think the reason KY hasn't faired so well the last few years is because the have been out coached. (My opinion only). I feel like KY had the better players the last few years but were out coached. When Doug Howard played the coaches only ran him a couple times that game. If you have a work horse like Howard or anybody else you use them to your advantage. Everyone seems to be comp laing about this game but every year there is always a very large crowd from both sides of the river. They give out a couple $500.00 scholarships to some of the players from both sides.

blitz43 Wrote:No wonder you want out...Smile
???? It has nothin to do with the record between the two. The refs take the WV side every year. KY should have won atleast 3 of the last 4 games but the penalties were so ridiculous that it did change the outcome of the game. That's why you see alot of the KY boys that originally get invited not play.
#27
There is some people that are trying to get another game so the kids don't have to play in that debacle over there.

Its a joke and there is a fight on the field and stands almost every year and why people continue to give money to Yogi Kinder is beyond belief to me.
#28
Don Blankenship is a Matewan grad. Just for information purposes.

I see someone already posted this. Sorry
#29
There hasn't been any trouble in the last few years. The players jawing back and forth is just emotions running high. The money raised is for the kids not Coach Kinder.

Who is the head coach for the KY team?
