The KHSAA calls it a "playoff". In your angry , jealous little world of bashing you may be Tom Landry and have all of the answers BUT in the real world where kids, coaches and fans dwell there are ups and downs. Cawood is a very talented team. Breathitt is a good team. Powell County is a team that has weapons to "shut up" alot of "nay sayers." The scheduling that Estill had this year was a result of the classification change and the fact that a couple of the team thought we would be an easy win but found out different. We never looked at a team this year and thought that we had the game in the bag. A true competitor would never do that. If you could just show up and win then everyone would want to play football. It's a sport that takes a certain type of person to play and for you to demean the Estill program and the teams we played this year is just ignorant! Breathitt is a good team and I don't think that they overlooked anyone this year either.
If you are eligable to play then come out play and learn something about this sport. If you are a spectator then come to our practice and watch. If you are a coach calls us up and let's scrimmage or play. I'm sure Coach Jones would accomodate you for any of these scenarios!
First of all I mentioned that Estill was as strong as any team they played and equally talented! Second of all the change in district DOES NOT mean you have to schedule 6 other gimmees. Look at the teams past record which was on your schedule. Not very convincing. In the past Cawood has been tough, not this year, nor Powell, and I don't believe Fleming had a winning record, however they played a more significant schedule. Outside the district they played Mason Co., Harrison Co., Bryan Station to name a few. That is much tougher than Phelps, Berea, Knott Co. Central, etc. If you know anything about scheduling, you know coaches have a choice in who they play if the dates are open. Why would you agree to play a Phelps team when you can play someone who would present a challenge and prepare you for a "Playoff" game. Breathitt's off schedule, to name a few, Lexington Christion, Prestonsburg, teams with winning records. Cawood played Middlesboro and Somerset for heavens sake. As stated, there is no bashing, just stating facts. All other teams in the district had at least two quality teams on the schedule if not more. I don't need to come and watch practice, I have heard from enough fans which are parents that say it is not rough and to easy. Again, I can promise you that you can find a more competitive schedule, which in turn will help you prepare for the Breathitt's. If I come across as bashing the kids then I apologize, they have no control, and are a great bunch. Did you not scrimmage Nicholas and Allen Central? Why not try Madison Central or Rockastle, it is just a scrimmage but with quality teams. Look up anything I have mentioned, it is facts from the KHSAA. The kids deserve to play the best! And as far as the playoffs, it is a district tournament, another way for the KHSAA to make money. If not, they would go back to sub districts or taking the top two from one district and playing two from another.

First off, check out some of their previous schedules without looking at the KHSAA site I remember them playing teams in the past 6 or 7 years who were not in their district that were pretty tough competitors, including Rockcastle, Clay Co., Bellevue, Belfry, Montgomery Co., and Johnson Central. I agree this past season's schedule was weak, but there's no need for this big of an argument over 1 season. If you coach, or have coached you understand that some things are beyond a coach's control, sometimes things don't work out the way you'd like, not saying that's the case here but scheduling can get complicated sometimes. And as for the easy practices, not quite sure I would agree with that. Practices aren't always meant to be rough, with low numbers it's not always best for teams to beat each other to death, and until you're at practice, and weight sessions with this team, you can't really say how hard they work, or the difficulty level of the practices.

I don't know of any parents that attended one practice this year that said it was "too easy". Just because our kids were not hurt in practice does not mean the practice was not effective. Our coaches practice us in a way that teaches us as we go. If they came out and beat the crap out us I don't think that we would get much out of it. You can keep the intensity and tempo without killing the players. As far as the "gimmes" go , I again say that it's an insult to those teams we played. If you were in a situation and someone called you "out" would you turn down the challenge or accept it? I don't know of any teams that would turn down a challenge like that. I assure you that if any of the teams we played last year want to drop us they can. I know a little about scheduling and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that if you have an opening you should take the game offered or you take the chance of having two or more open dates on your schedule while you wait for Trinity or Saint X to call.
This year Cawood is combining with two more schools in their area so we will be playing a team that is probably a 5A or 6A class. they are still however going to play Cawood's schedule which means our district will be looked at as "Better" by some. Maybe that will make some folks happy. I think that since the year is early and you might have some influence in Kentucky football you should call some teams and have them call Coach Jones to schedule a scrimmage or a game. I'm sure that he would be glad to accomodate any openings that we may have. It's all about getting better and learning. This year we did both of those things!
A big lesson that we learned this year is that there is not alot of difference between winning and losing because no matter what there is always going to be someone there to criticize you!:moon:

Umm, just to let you know, there are 10 games in a season. How could Powell be possibly be 2-7?

Well if you don't wanna see how Powell predicts that they are gonna have a good season, you don't have to come in here. I mean, its simple.

Can't speak for Red Devil, but I won't. It is good to be hopeful and high expectations. You first must make a statement on the field, not on computer. That is not so simple so Good luck.

He won't be there long enough. The tenure for a coach at Powell is not long if you haven't noticed. If they don't win more this year, look for him to move on.

I know we have to make the statement on the field. We will try our best out on the field also.

Yep. Very true. I was in Mrs. Whitaker's office just yesterday. She seemed to like Powell County very much.

Go Pirates. We have a lot to prove......Not to people on here, but to ourselves. Let's not do what we're going to do for other people. Let's do it for the boys and coaches that support you every day at practice and weight lifting. Not many people expect us to do very well. We shouldn't have any pressure on us. Let's go out and work hard and not QUIT. Everything else will fall into place.

This is so true. All we have to do is keep working hard and it WILL fall into place. Just like Coach Whitaker says, "why NOT Powell Co??" It is true. We have just as much ability as any other team. We just have to work hard and keep at it!
01-28-2008, 03:05 PM
Yep. And if Powell keeps working hard and never gives up, we will be like the Russells and the Breathitts. Getting wins and reaching the playoffs prety much every year. They just need to listen to the coach. Do as the coach says and just give it your all. I think we will have a good season and we will turn some heads this year.

I think Scotty Newsome will be a big impact for the Powell County O and D line next year. He will be the anchor in the line next year and will be the team leader. He is a tough and good player. He always leads by example. And he loves Mercedes Roberts...lo

So who's the staff next seson? New or returning? Who will be impact players?

Is Hardy going to be ready? He and Jesse would be a very fast backfield.

I think S. N. can be an impact player. He has lost a lot of weight and is in the weight room getting stronger. He's just got to keep working.

Hardy's status depends solely on Hardy. He's got to rehab that knee pretty quick. Isn't the rehab for a knee injury about 6-7 months?...... That would be a quick backfield, if he's ready.

Yes, he will be a big impact player. He has been going to weightlifting and working very hard while he has been there.
