I have a few questions.
What is their record?
Why do they only have 5 8th graders?
How is the 7th grade team record and talent wise?
How is the 6th grade team record and talent wise?
My son chose not to play this year but I have attended a few home games and I must say Varney has calmed down A LOT since his first year but I still don't know if he can coach. No excuse for not having a county title yet.

Don't have a clue as to their TRUE record (don't have my schedule here with me that I keep it marked on) but it is somewhere around 13-5??
If you want to know why there is only five 8th graders I suggest you do one of two things.... either ask the coach yourself or talk to one of the 5 players who remain on the team... 8th graders... NOT the 7th graders who play with the 8th grade.
7th grade is doing rather well but I again have NO clue as to their record.
6th grade is loaded with talent that will do nothing but improve in coming years. If your son would have played he would have been in the 6th grade wouldn't he?
We play tomorrow night at Pikeville and again on Tuesday at Johns Creek... neither place is too far to travel ....... come on over and watch!! :Cheerlead

7th grade is 12-3
We have 5 8th graders because 7 8th graders chose to leave the team for various reasons.

If Martin Co. is the best team that you have played, then why have you lost 8 games? Or have you played them that many times?

It has nothing to do with who has beat us, Martin Co. is physical, has a solid PG, has 2 kids that can score at will, a couple of kids that are bangers, and good size.
We've lost to them 3 times, 2 in conference and once at the Pikeville College Tourney.
Losses are -
Martin Co. - 3
Paintsville - 1
Dorton - 1
Pikeville - 1
Burch - 1
Mullins - 1

Agree with you ...... this is the losses we have had BUT..... if Belfry plays together AS a TEAM and don't do as they have been known to do before then they are a very good ball team. There is some nice talent on the team and some kids who have played for quite a few years. Give them some credit.... they could run up and down the floor and not even try. Those kids practice EVERYDAY and most give 100% MOST of the time. Basically what I am saying..... Martin Co. (has how many holdbacks??) is playing (when they play Belfry) a group of STRAIGHT up 12,13, and 14 year olds. NO 15 year olds on the team.....
I personally think they do decently on any given night......

8th grade team is now 10-9.
They are playing better basketball than they were earlier in the season, but against some teams size in the post, and all over the court, gives the Pirates a slight disadvantage. When their jumpers are falling they can play with anyone, but as with most middle school kids the outside shooters are inconsistent.
7th grade team is 13-3.
Two of their losses were to Paintsville. At Paintsville the team just didn't show up, and were beaten badly. Total embarassment is what I call that one. The second was a two point loss at Belfry without one starter. The team had a chance to win or send it in to overtime, but didn't execute on the offensive end in the final seconds.
The other loss was at Martin Co. without two of the starting five out of the game, one was injured and the other sick. The 7th grade team defeated Martin Co. at Belfry by 14.

Evidently you are a fan of the BMS coach. I have a few things to say about your post that I do disagree with.
8th grade--I have been to about 3 home games this year and can tell you what is wrong with those young men. First, THEY DON'T HAVE A COACH! How can you start with 12 kids and get down to 5 within 3 weeks? Amazing. Second, I have noticed that they put the smaller kids in EVEN though they are outsized 5 to 1. When the 8th graders are all in, there is more size and maturity. They tend to get clicking and as soon as they do, out they come, well some of them. Honestly, BMS will never had a county chip while under this current staff. As far as their size, the 8th graders match up pretty well with teams who don't have holdbacks. (You can tell which have been held back and which have not) EX: facial hair, beard, driving to a game, etc.
7th grade--has what the staff wants. They want to play them for both the 7th and 8th grade games. It is obvious to someone (like me) who doesn't even have a kid who plays. There is some talent on this team but not that would match up with kids who are 15 years old and have been held back. They don't have a chance! Sorry if this offends but I have sit back and watched these type of comments fly back and forth. I just wanted to put my two cents worth in.

Not touchy, everyone on this site knows who I am and I am just stating facts the way it is.

First off I am not a "keyboard" warrior. I have been a member of this site for over a month now and haven't posted anything until now. I guess I just felt the time was right. (haha) Secondly, I have no interest in sending you a pm OR talking to you after a game. I hardly come to the games why would I need to talk to you? My daughter cheers. That has nothing to do with the basketball coach does it? Evidently you can't take a small amount of creative criticism without getting all upset. I spoke the truth in what I posted. Nothing more, nothing less. That is my opinion of what I saw. That is not to say its what everyone else saw. I have evidently stepped on your toes here and won't post anything else (unless I need to) pertaining to the basketball program. I think I am understood.
OH for your information, Mr. Hurley is the PRINCIPAL

Yes it does, my son plays for "that coach". And in my opinion we need to stand behind whomever is coaching and let them do their job. Not criticize and grip all the time. I'm surprised he gets a chance to coach. And let's not forget he's not the only coach we have.

Belfry has a pretty decent team. I just figured they would have a few more kids out. IMO I think their coach does a good job. He moves the players in and out and gets them rest breaks when he can. The ones he puts in, holds their own in order to give the others needed rest. I talk to them kids every game and they are some good kids. And I have never heard a complaint from them. Just let them play ball and make you proud. Keep up the good work Pirates. See ya next week at the Conference Tourney.

Martin Co must have some talent then on the sixth grade team, because we just beat belfry last weekend in paintsville.

The Belfry squad was split, but yes Martin Co. has some good talent as well. I think #10 is going to be a very solid player.

I wasnt at the Belfry vs. P'ville game but i heard P'ville didnt play to good but still had a 21 point lead in the 4th but the second team almost gaev it away. Belfry brought it down to 8 then P'ville put the starters back in and it was to much for the Pirates to handle. (JUST WAHT I HEARD)!

Pikeville played well, as reb. and to's were about even, they shot the ball at a 60% clip though. And yes the lead was 21 at one point.
