Powell County Pirates 2008

Journeyman Wrote:Surely you don't think it is ok for a kid to never face reality. If the kid is that good or mentally tough enough he won't be bothered about the crap around him. More goes into a "superstar" than just a sport, there are things also outside of sports, like school, community, etc. If the parents aren't helping them, who is left. It is not tearing down, it is keeping in check and trying to keep a team together. You seem to know the problem and who is the cause, why turn a blind eye? Address the situation and move on. If you are not on one course TOGETHER, you are on several courses for failure. By the sound of things you all are the latter part! Sad

This is very true. If a child is built up to believe he is better than others, then he will act like he is, which will effect the entire team....whether you see it or not, Blitz.

GO Pirates! :Cheerlead

TeamMom Wrote:Humility is a trait that many parents are failing to teach children nowadays. Then there are "superstar" pro and college athletes with huge egos setting examples for them. Alot of kids are now learning very early that if they have even an ounce of talent they will be treated as the hero. Some of them truly believe the team cannot win without them...which is obviously, not true. It's really unfortunate because then they have to learn humility the hard way.

Right on TeamMom!

Powell County would be much better off if everybody worked together instead of all of this.

Play nice.

Very true. Except, it has always been this way there. The best record was 5-5 when the program first started and it continues to stumble. If a coach can get this in control, (players, parents, school system), they have a chance. Until then, this is what to look forward too. Sad

That was our vest record. And COach Jones also had two 4-6 seasons and 1 1-9 season. The first 4-6 season, we beat West Carter and Lewis County for the first time in school history. His second, we went 3-0 our first games and had one of the best defenses in the state. And then the 1-9 season happened. We just didn't have any leadership.

I don't think 4-6 warrants saying you had one of the best defenses in the state. Unless you played six top teams in the state who beat you which would possibly leave you as the seventh. Come on, statements like this are ridiculous for you to make. It may have been the best defense you all ever had........

I said through the first three games. Not after the entire offense. After the end of the season, we didn't have a great defefnse but we had a good one.

Now,Now...lets be civil. If they are smart, they'll be back, cause they don't want to be labeled quitters. That's what is expected. Somebody has got to show these kids stability. Quitting is never an option in my book. Although, I did quit smoking Aug. 6, 2007...Yeah 4 me. Remember...WINNERS NEVER QUIT & QUITTERS NEVER WIN!!!....Coach Terry Epling of Gilbert, WV told me that when I was in 7th grade. Thanks Coach E. Seems that is the norm around here. When things get tough, people tend to give up. You just got get back up, wipe off the dust, and keep pressing forward. I will NOT be broken. I will NEVER give up on these young men!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1:Thumbs:

Agreed. This booya just stirs things up. I would suspect if coaches didn't return it wouldn't be do to the kids. Powell has some really good kids.

According to administration, coach Whitaker is looking for 3 coaches. Two are not coming back for whatever reason and not sure on one. They wanted one more coach anyway if these three stayed. Sounds like something is not right and Powell is not an easy place to get coaches.

A lot of players are playing next year. Some of them do miss the game and want to play again. I just hope we can get a lot of players to come out.

Seems like weight lifting has started for the Pirates. Heard that it is pretty tough. It may be, but it sure will help out in the long run! From what Coach Jones always told me, football games are won during the offseason. When you are lifting and running to get in shape for the season. Best of luck Pirates!

High school football games are won during practice. If you practice to win then you will win. One of the greatest high school coaches in Kentucky, Garnis Martin from Bardstown, did not lift a weight with his kids during season and also only lifted the ones who did not play basketball and baseball during the off season. Just because you are strong does not mean you can play football. There is a lot more to the game than pushing weights. I can assure you some of the strongest teams in the state did not make it out of their districts or into the playoffs. Strength helps, but it is not what causes you to win. You still have to play the game and it all starts Monday through Thursday with practice!

I agree to some of what you said. A lot of strongs teams may not make the playoffs, but they may have been a lot worse if they had not of lifted. Also, the weight room does not just make you stronger. You should spend just as much time on footspeed, agilty and plyo's as you do lifting. Two of the biggest gains you make in the weightroom are work ethic and team spirit. It is a time to push kids to get them to see what hard work is and what it can bring. It also brings the kids closer together while they working towards a common goal.
I would venture to say that not many if any successful teams these days don't hit the weightroom all off-season. More and more high schools are hiring strength and conditioning coaches (often a member of the regular staff) to work with their kids to push them to their fullest potential. Bottom line, I don't know of any successful schools that don't place a high value on their off-season work.

I mentioned one, as well as saying that it does not hurt to lift weights. If you look most successful schools, the kids who play one sport, play two or three. This keeps them agile, in shape, and also working for a common goal. You can be as strong and agile as physically possible and know all there is to know about the game, bottom line, if you can't do little things like block and tackle it does not matter how strong/fast you are. And this comes from coaching and practice. When Highlands won state with Lorenzan and Smith, they were not one sport players, Mason County had some successful years with Grutza who was not a one sport player and several other kids on that team which was pretty good. High school is not college, you must first learn the game, then worry about the rest. All college teams are strong and fast, the one's who have the best coaching and do the little things are the one's who are successful. You have to practice to win, nothing takes the place of practice and repetition. If you take two equal teams, the best coached and disciplined will win every time. If they are not equal the lesser has a chance if they have been taught the little things and the other hasn't.

Whe all thing are equal..The strongest will win....A quote I picked up from Coach Dubya.....true, very true

blitz43 Wrote:Whe all thing are equal..The strongest will win....A quote I picked up from Coach Dubya.....true, very true

You are entitled to your thoughts. However, I am to mine as well. When all is equal, the better coached team will win....... This is discipline, fundamentals, execution, teamwork, etc. It has been proven time and time again in all sports. I have seen the strongest fall time and time again due to lack of coaching. I am not trying to say your quote is wrong, just simply stating it is not always the fact. Too many coaches rely on strength and their knowledge to win football games. Nothing takes the place of fundamentals and I would venture to say you can ask any coach who has beaten the odds with a less talented team and succeeded. That is what determines what a coach is. Anyone can coach talent, but great coaches turn them into champions. I have watched Kentucky football for a long time and older coaches continue to beat younger coaches and a big part of this is due to fundamentals and discipline. When Dudley Hilton won the state at Bourbon County, there were 20 teams bigger, better, stronger than them in the state, it did not prevail. He took less talent and won the state. If you don't know him, he is an old time coach that has not changed the way he coaches. He is now at Bell Co. and continues to win regardless of who he plays and it is usually top competetion. If you would like I can give you more examples, here is one, Caldwell Co. when they beat Danville for the state championship. No one could touch Danville in any class but Danville lacked discipline. Strength and speed help, but it is not the answer. An example for basketball would be Carlisle Co. when they won the Sweet 16. They beat teams far superior with fundamental basketball and discipline. They had one offensive set and ran it too perfection, took high quality shots, and played good defense and beat the impossible.

I agree with you that strength and speed do not guarantee you anything, but it sure does not hurt either! Nothing takes the place of fundamentals, but when you add strength and speed training to your fundamentals you have a great combination. I agree that many schools have multi-sport athletes, but that does not mean they can't lift. Mason County is living proof of this. They have in-school weightlifting classes that all their athletes participate in. Lofton, Grutza and the rest were lifting everyday through their championship run.
Everyone has a right to their opinion, but I think most coaches today stress weightlifting.
#86
I agree with you coacher. I think weightlifting is very, very important. A good coach will have, for the most part, the fundamentals down, by the first game. Therefore, the strongest will rise to the top. Coach Dubya will have the Pirates in a whole lot better position to win this year.
#87
I watched Powell county play last year and they just compete physically with other teams. They were often just pushed around the field and their O-line always let someone through. I think Coach Whitaker needs to start over completely and teach fundamentals and the rest will fall in place.

It's good to see so much interest in Powell Co. football from the fans on here. Let's hope this carries over to the students.

Good luck to this powell co team...i wish the best for them

I'm excited about football at Powell Co. I hope the young men we got coming out this year are excited as well. Just keep working. It's gonna pay off.
