Belfry - This is a bit controversial because older Pirate fans even have trouble determing who is better of these two I am going to mention.
The two are Doug Howard & Rick Kestner (I think that is his last name). Most everyone on here knows about Doug so I'm not going to elaborate on him, but Mr. Kestner is the only former Pirate I know of to play in the NFL. Some say James Ramey did too, but I've never heard it verified. Most of the old school Pirate fans say that Mr. Kestner was truly a man among boys during his high school playing days and even in college. He had a very successful career in the NFL and is one of the all-time mountain greats.
Doug Howard had, without a doubt, the most prolific statistical career of any former Pirate. Career rushing leader, career TD leader, career points leader, State Finals rushing yards record-holder, arguably the best ILB @ Belfry, and the best player on the Pirates only two Championship teams.
If you judge only high school I'd say the edge goes to Doug, but Rick Kestner has had the most overall success of any former Pirate. In Doug's defense he is still in high school.
I for one have no problem calling this a wash.

The best or most well known player to Come out of Lynn Camp was Quentin Henson. Henson is the 4th all-time leading rusher in state history.

Didn't he go to Michigan or something like that???
I never saw him play, but I heard he was a dandy.

So you think that Doug was better than David? :?:

Hands down, and there is one more back that played at Beflry better than Jones. His name is Mikey Scott.
Keep in mind that I'm rating overall football players, but Jones isn't Top 5 in that category. He is top 3 when talking about RBs, but not overall football players.

Ok, I was going to say... Overall football player he MIGHT be better, But as far as RB's Jones is better

No, actually in rating RBs it would go Doug Howard, Mikey Scott, and then David Jones.
Howard led the team in rushing both years Jones was at Belfry, had a better yards per carry average, yards per game average, and out rushed Jones by a total of about 400 yards over the course of two years. He also led the teams in devastating blocks and yards after contact, so in no way is Jones a better RB than Doug Howard.

I look forward to watching doug play next year.. You think he will start at pikeville?
One of the best player to ever come out of Wheelwright was Shorty Jamerson. We all know Shorty!!!
One of the best players to play at SF was Nick Compton.

He has just as good a chance of starting as anyone I suppose. I know that he won't be the atypical freshman in the sense that the Bears will not have to wait for his body to mature. He is physically ready to play college level ball. Picking up the playbook, if it is complex, would be the only thing holding him back IMO.
Anyway, we all do know Shorty and the grandson that got his genes. But I've never seen Comptn play. How does Ketrin Mays stack up to him?

I never saw him play, but I heard he was a dandy.
He was offered to goo their, as well as Alabama, but he hurt his shoulder, and decided not to sign and sit out, then lost intrest in playing in college. Which is to bad because he had alot of talent.

torQQue,
love the fact that you are giving my Paw props, but he didn't go to Wheelwright. He went to Henderson High School, and didn't move to Wheelwright until my dad was born. My grandma was living in Wheelwright and my Grandfather was living in Glasgow (coaching at Glasgow) and after my dad was born he started coaching at the big Dub.

In ER's short history, I would say this would go to Hank Simpson, Paul Deese, or Jeremy Vanover. All 3 have had good Careers on both sides of the ball. Hank is alot better on Defense, and might not even play Offense this year. So Paul or Jeremy. I can't really decide between the two.

Ryan Brown from Paintsville is one of the best football players I have ever seen. When he played in the KY/TENN allstar game he was lined up against a kid by the name of King Dunlap who now is in the starting rotation at Auburn and he definitely held his own. Ryan is the most dominant defensive lineman that i have ever seen in a Paintsville uniform. Hopefully he'll get some quality PT this coming season for James Madison.

Hank and Jeremy are by far the best people to play at ERHS since it has been a school. i dont know about the 1st year, but Jeremy V and Hank are the best players to have played at ERHS.

Thinking about it more Swag. Paul Deese is by far the best player to ever play at ER. Hands down. He played QB, RB, WR, OLB, CB, S in his one year career at The Ridge. Jeremy is still a close second, but looking at the stats I would have to say Paul

Umm, I WOULDNT

im with torQQue on this one in saying Nick Compton is the best to ever play at South Floyd BUT i also think BJ Bryant does rank up there with him..

Happy what about Micah Caudill
04-08-2005, 06:51 PM
Howard is better than Micah... Micah was better than Jonah, and jones was better than both the caudill's.. Micah did have some dandy footwork though

Stunt101 Wrote:Happy what about Micah Caudill
Micah is definitely Top 10, maybe even Top 5 as far as RBs are concerned. But nowhere near Top 5 or Top 10 as far as overall players. Most of Belfry's, and all EKY high schools, star players go both ways. Micah was a below average blocker and barely more than a liability on defense.
But since you ask I will give you my Top 5 RBs ever at Belfry, and then Top 5 football players. Keep in mind that I don't go back extremely far so there are a lot of great players I never saw play.
RBs:
1. Doug Howard
2. Mikey Scott
3. David Jones
4. Greg Varney
5. Dale Oliver/Micah Caudill/Russell Carter/Kevin Varney
Overall Players:
1. Doug Howard/Rick Kestner
2. Mikey Scott
3. James Ramey
4. Keith "Chan" Marcum
5. Richie Blackburn/Matt Varney/Floyd Hatfield

swag? what do you mean you don't know about the first year? that is when vanover played.
04-09-2005, 11:56 AM
i know, i meant i didnt know who the best overall player BESIDES Vanover was.
04-09-2005, 01:27 PM
All-Time Best Overall players would have to be:
Mike Bowling or Neil Burchett
Currently I'd have to say Sean Music.

i'm gonna make a wild guess and say the Swag and Pimptriscuit are the same person. Seeing as Swag posted something under that name then when Jesus asked him something he replied an answer in a Pimptristcuit name.
