Who will be the top teams and top players coming back.
Here is my outlook.
Top 10 Teams
1. Breathitt County - You cant help but put the defending champs in the number one spot. Even with the loss of Lutes and company Breathtit will still be strong. With the makings of a star in Kendall Noble and the height of Shouse down lown Breathitt is still going to be tough. They are not going to let the lack of guard play slow them down. Breathitt will win the 55th very easily.
2. Perry Central - As usual Perry Central will remain at the tops of everyones list. They could very easily be number at any given time and will more than likely will. As with Breathitt PCC lost a huge part of them when Kristen Madden left for graduation, but with Sturdivant and Feltner, PCC is still going to be tough. Coach Napier always has his teams ready and this year isnt going to be an exception, they never rebuild they always reload.
3. Knott County Central - The past couple of years the girls program at KCC has not been up to par but from the looks of it they are trying to change that. KCC was one of the only teams in the region to not lose any of their main players. They return everyone. From the looks of the summer KCC is going to be hard to beat. Don't give up on this team to soon. I look for them to go deep into the region and possibly going to state.
4. Letcher Central - Letcher will yet again be among the top teams this year as well. Yes, they lost alot to graduation but they still return the younger of the Sexton sisters, Kincer, and Baker if she decideds to play. They also have alot of size. Don't expect to see a lazy Letcher team as long as Dickie Adams is up there. He will make sure his team is ready.
5. Powell County - I am not real sure on who they have playing but I am pretty sure they didnt lose alot if anybody to graduation. Powell was tough last year and is going to be tough this year.
6. Owsley County - I watched them play against Knott County Central earlier this year and they have some bright spots. With Kendra Combs returning Owsley is still going to be tough.
7. Leslie - Even with the loss of star point guard Ciarra Stidham and star center Beth Lewis I look for Leslie county to do alright. I dont look for them to go far in the tournament but they will give teams a run for their money.
8. Hazard - They could very easily be in the 6 spot. Hazard and Leslie are going to be close this year. With the loss of Slone, Hazard is going to have to find a point guard. They still have Hall who has made her way in this region.
9. June Buchanan - This spot is hard to feel. Alot of teams could be in this spot because after the top 8 the region really drops off. JBS is really young but have alot of talent. They may not beat Knott, Letcher and Perry but they will go down fighting. Coach Hayes has a good group of girls to work with and with his expereince anything is possible.
10. Wolfe County - I am not sure on what they return or what they loss but Coach Bell will always have a team that will give everyone a run for their money.
Top 10 Players
1. Heather Sturdivant - Sees the floor well and is as fast as lightning.
2. Megan Mosley - She could very easily be number one. She is known for her speed and her shooting. I sure wouldnt lece this girl open for to long.
3. Lenae Shouse - With the height she has I dont think anyone can compete with her when it comes to post players.
4. Allison Feltner - This girl is a force to reckoned with. She is very rough and will help Sturdivant out by doing the dirty work.
5. Kendall Noble - This girl will only be an 8th grader but she has already proven herself by grabbing the regional championship mvp.
6. Sharaye Kincer - She is another who is rough and ready to go to war on the boards. She may not be an offensive threat but you can bet she is going to battle with anyone down low.
7. Ashley Hall - She may not have much help this year but you can bet that isnt going to slow this kid down. As with Mosley, I wouldn't leave this one open for long.
8. Kendra Thomas - She isnt known for her shot but she along will battle on the boards with absolutely anyone. During the district and regional tournaments Kendra really stepped it up and started scoring relieveing some of the load off of Mosley's back.
9. Sammy King - The 8 and 9 spots could very easily be switched around because what one doesnt do the other does. King came through time after time hitting shots KCC despertly needed. Against Leslie in the regional tournament at the buzzer she hit the 3 that tied the game. Look for her to cause some noise.
10. Brittany Sexton - The sister of Ashley Sexton, what more can you say. She may not be as quick as her sister but what her sister lacked in height Brittany picked up. She is the tall one of the two coming in close to 5'10 or 5'11. She helped LCC alot last year look for her to pick up where her sister left off this year.
*Note...I am not sure If Teirra Baker is playing, I was told she wasn't. But if she was she would be up there around 7 or 8.

Good list. Knott IMO will be better than PCC and Breathitt.

Baker will not be playing. If Kristen Griffie of LCC will get into shape could crack top ten. Leslie has had very good middle school teams the past two years and will surprise people this year. I would rate Noble of BC third, but with additional growth could move into the top spot by the end of the year.

That is very possible but you know as well as everyone else who watches KCC girls play it is according which team shows up. If the girls at KCC play like they did at Eastern then they will be hard to beat. If they play like they did against Johnson Central, Cordia could beat them.

So it is for sure Baker isn't playing. If so that is a tough loss for LCC. She helped them alot. She could have been a very good player. As for Griffie I couldn't agree more. She would be a heck of a ball player is she would get into shape. Must I say she is a heck of a volleyball player. And once again Noble could be number 3 but right now she is still young and more than likely she is liable to be the top player by the end and the start of next year.

Good List, but Courtney Jones of Powell should be among the individual standouts IMO.

I was not sure who Powell lost so I didn't but anyone down from there..But yes she deserves to be there along with her team mate Kendra McFarland.

Does anyone know what teams got new coaches..if any team did?

I think Teia (?) Brandenburg of Estill Co. is a
player to watch. She may be one of the best 3 point
shooters in the region, and her quickness to the basket
has been improving each year. And, the way Estill Co.
plays hard-nosed man2man defense, you can't count them
out as a potential sleeper in the region.

Do You keep up with the 56th District any at all? Were all kinda loaded with talented players also.
Estill- Tia Brandenburg and the twins
Lee- Courtany Johnson, and the Bowling sisters
Powell- Kendra McFarling and Courtney Jones
Owsley- Kendra Combs and Mika Turner (Owsley has about 7 or 8 talented Kids)
IMO some of these players need and deserve to be in the Top 10.

Baker isn't playing. Lcc has lost a great deal of their younger players who chose not to play. LCC's two 8th graders ,Whitaker and Meade elected to stay back and cannot play as well. they both will be top ten players during their career at LCC.

I haven't heard anything about Tierra. SInce when did she decide not to play?

I talked to a couple of players from LCC and they said she decided not to play soon after the regional tournament. And she didnt play any at all this summer.

I'm afraid this is true, I spoke with some friends, they told me the same thing.
Also, Haley Whitaker will not be playing this season for the Cougars. (She will be held back another year.)
I wonder who will run point?

Who else do they have that is capable of running point? Brittany Sexton??

I think that Powell County will be a force to reckon with this upcoming year. They went to Transylvania camp and only lost one game. They played around 6 or 7 games. From what I saw in summer ball the 5 starters all work together really well. JMO

Kendra Combs....She can shoot lights out fro behind the three point line, and she has height, so she can also play in the post and help her team rebound!!!!
09-10-2007, 02:28 PM
Sharaye Kincer is a BEAST for LCC!
09-17-2007, 07:58 PM
kcc will do pretty good this season, if they let someone besides megan mosley bring the ball up the court. i'm not saying she is not a good player, she is very talented, but i just think that amburgey should give the other girls a chance. It's team ball not megan mosley ball. Beth Bates is good under the goal as is kendra thomas. Amanda Terry could bring the ball up court she has the speed and ball handling capabilities. Sammy King is great at shooting the ball. Kelly Pratt and Keirstin Conley can also shoot the ball well. I'm not saying that amburgey should completely stop letting Megan bring the ball up the court, just that he needs to give the other girls a chance to show people what they can do. You win and lose games as a team, no-one person is responsible for a win or loss.

before you know it the season will start. coaches will coach and players will play
all teams have 0 wins 0 loses :letsparty
all teams have 0 wins 0 loses :letsparty

I agree with it all but powell has 4 or 5 really talented kids! Courtney jones, Kendrs, Shelby barnett, ashley lacy,

i agree court is good enough to be in the top 10 IMO

I know she was out for the whole season of volleyball because of her ACL, and that's a shame, because she is a senior and this is her last go around. But I think she will come out strong and work hard to get back to were she was. Good luck to you Tia!

KCC will be a very hard team to beat this year I see them in the state tournament this year. Also watch out for LCC and the Sexton Sisters. Also Hazard has the potential of a very great season.
10-06-2007, 06:25 PM
Kender Combs of Owsley Co has to be included as one of the region's best. I dont see how she could be left out of any 14th region list if the person making the list keeps up with the WHOLE region! The region has more than 3 districts last time I checked.
10-07-2007, 12:15 AM
yes the 56th district is by far a strong district to be in. who ever wins that district stands a really good chance of regional title this year. oh, yea jones is the only senior on powell co team
10-07-2007, 09:20 AM
When was the last time a team from the 56th won the region?
