Will the Pirates open up their offense this year?
#1
I was just wondering what you guys think? They have a lot better schedule this year with better defenses to run against, will they throw the ball move to keep teams off guard, because they don't have the speed they're used to.
#2
I don't think Haywood will change anything at all. He has a run oriented offense and I think it will stay that way until he decides to retire.

Very similar to McGlone at Russell. We are running it right at you and it is up to you to stop us.
#3
yeah,i agree with you on that but that ideal usaully works but got stuffed against russell last year, and i think more teams this year will try,key word is try to do what the devils done to them in the semi's
#4
if haywood is having trouble, he will change it. If its not broken don't fix it..phillip haywood is an absolute genious, if someone figures his wishbone out, he'll come right back with something else..
#5
as lomg as Haywood is the head coach at Belfry a monkey could play QB for him, cause all you going to be doing is handing it off
#6
Hes gonna run?
#7
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (and I know from expierience.) lol

I had the honor of meeting Coach Haywood the other day, outside of a football atmosphere, hell of a guy.

Thanks for that unthoughtful reply...That lets me know that you have absolutely no idea about the wishbone or the veer, and probably not much insight on football in general.

Again, thank you.
#10
The offense will stay the same, but you may see a little more play-action on 1st and 2nd down in order to keep defenses off balance.
#11
I think some of you forget that a lil while back, Belfry actually was a passing team. When Jonathan Wright was at QB, Belfry was basically an air attack..

yeah i remember that back in the late 90s i think it was correct me if im wrong.
#13
i think Belfry will run the ball like always if they are a great running team always have and always will be coach Haywood is so great he will put in spin in there if he has to.
#14
They will be a run team but he is smart enough to take advantage of a qb arm like Elkins and due to the loss of speed in the backfield he will pass more than last year, still run oriented, just to keep the defense on their heels.
#15
the backfield is really slow this year, right?

Thet won't see too many defenses like the one that Russell brought in last year. Lack of speed will not help the passing game. Ball control is probably Belfry's best option.

Really though their only real slow spot I think is in the backfield. Im sure they will have another speed back in their but nobody knows who. They got a couple decent recievers I think.
#18
is may the only one back in the backfield
#19
The offense will be primarily the same i would suspect. Look for Lee to play fullback (I expect him to be VERY good), May to move back to halfback and one of the following to fill the other halfback position:

Heath Varney, Phillip Hickman, Ryan Preston, the Lovern kid

May see more of that "short shotgun" that Belfry ran some last year, with Elkins and May back there.

I hope to see more play action passing, etc but you never know.
#20
with May in the back field i would run
#21
The May kid is too slow to play tailback. I heard he ran a 5.09 40 time. He's a real good fullback, but i dont see him running around the ends.
#22
That could be true. May is certainly not a speed demon. BUT, I have seen him break 60 yard runs against good teams like Middlesboro and Prestonsburg.

May is not going to hit a lot of homeruns, but I think he is fast enough to play tailback, especially if Belfry can plug another kid (perhaps the Lovern kid) in at the other TB spot who CAN hit the homerun.

Haywood won 2 titles and both of those were with homerun hitters Jones and Howard. He also got real close in 85, 86, and to some extent 89, 05, 06 without standout speed guys (unless Corey Chapman and Matt Maynard are standout speed guys)

So the way I see it is this:

Haywood has coming back on defense:

Hickman, Totten, Sutherland, Lee, Bowens, May, Dotson, Elkins, + contributors such as Coleman. = 8 Starters on D and top replacement

On offense = QB Elkins, May, Lee (didn't start but I GAURANTEE he will be AWESOME at FB), Bowens, Preston, Sutherland, Young and a couple other players who are ready to go (like Dotson - 2nd TE, Lovern, Coleman, Heath Varney ***, etc)

Belfry might be BETTER overall than they were last season. YES, they lack homerun speed, but I think they could be better.

It will ultimate depend on a few things. Limiting turnovers, GREAT line play, and improved play out of Elkins.

If those things happen, it "might" not matter if Belfry has offensive gamebreaking speed.

ALSO... watch for #7 - Lovern - the whole season could lean on him.

BTW... Russell lost a 6'5" 310" recently.
#23
^I would consider Matt Maynard just as speedy as anyone Belfry has had in the backfield over the last 20 years.

Did the lineman from Russell transfer? Are you talking about Seth Harvey?
#24
Lovern is the kid Id watch to, I think he will be Belfrys missing piece, I forgot all about him. He is little but can scoot.
#25
If I were Belfry I would stick with what has worked for years. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
#26
Belfry's offense will be just fine. Russell was a heck of a team last year, with good Leadership. Not to take anything away from Russell, but what happened last season was last season!
#27
It would certainly help their offense, but they do a pretty good job of just running over people. I would like to see them pass at least 20 times in a game. Belfry is way too predictable and needs some variety IMO.
